Synthesis Of Novel Targeted Drug Delivery Systems For Cancer Therapy, Antonio Clementi May 2008

Synthesis Of Novel Targeted Drug Delivery Systems For Cancer Therapy, Antonio Clementi

Masters

One of the most important goals of pharmaceutical science is local izing the pharmacological activity of the drug at the site of action. Drug delivery systems - are. molecular tools which without undesired interaction at other sites target a specific drug receptor. In this work a· novel folate-cyclodextrin conjugate was synthesised for potential use as a drug delivery system in cancer therapy. Folate was directly covalently bound to an amino derivative of p-Cyclodextrin with a view to decreasing the polydispersity of the carrier system. Ultimately the cyclodextrin cavity will be used to transport drugs to the site of action. This …

Ocular Aberrations Wavefront Sensor In Clinical Application, Matthew Sheehan Apr 2008

Ocular Aberrations Wavefront Sensor In Clinical Application, Matthew Sheehan

Masters

A versatile Hartmann-Shack (HS) wavefront sensor (WFS) was designed and constructed. Its advantages include simultaneous pupil centre determination, off-axis capability, realtime data displays, and efficient lenslet sampling orientation. The instrument is compact and transportable, making it convenient for use in a clinical setting. Subject alignment is achieved by the use of a parallel channel that is recombined with the sensing channel to simultaneously image the external eye and the HS spots onto a single charge coupled device (CCD). The pupil centre is determined using this image of the eye, rather than the HS spots. Off-axis measurements are possible throughout an …

Ovarian Signalling:Insights Into The P13k/Pkb/Foxo And The Ras/Raf/Mek/Erk Pathways, Nicola Cahill Jan 2008

Ovarian Signalling:Insights Into The P13k/Pkb/Foxo And The Ras/Raf/Mek/Erk Pathways, Nicola Cahill

The ovaries are a pair of female reproductive organs that are involved in the production of gametes “oogenesis” and the production of hormones “steroidogenesis” to mediate the oestrous cycle, preparation of the uterus for pregnancy and the preparation of the breast for lactation www.lab.anhb.uwa.edu.au/mb140/corepages/femaleRepro). The oestrous cycle is controlled by the release of the pituitary gonadotrophins, follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and lutenising hormone (LH). The physiological responses of ovarian steroidogenesis, oogenesis, folliculargenesis, ovulation and lutenisation to the gonadotrophins are accomplished by the activation of greater than one hundred ovarian target genes (Hunzicker-Dunn et al 2006). These processes are dependant on …

Making Sense Of Men's Workout Practices: The Body, Age And Identity, Andrew Dunne Jan 2008

Making Sense Of Men's Workout Practices: The Body, Age And Identity, Andrew Dunne

Masters

Background: Within sociology it is generally accepted that the body has become an object or “project” that is worked on and transformed as a central part of self-identity (Baudrillard 1998; Corrigan 1997; Featherstone 1991; Giddens 1991; Turner 1995, 1992; Shilling 2003). An alternative to such arguments, Leder (1990) conceptualizes the body as an “absent presence”. He argues that, while the body plays a central role in shaping our experience of the world, we are frequently oblivious to our own bodies. For Leder, bodywork is sporadic. He contends that specific social and/or physiological experiences cause the body to “dys-appear”, or enter …

Ecotoxicological Investigations Of Pharmaceutical Compounds On A Battery Of Freshwater Test Species., Elaine Minagh Jan 2008

Currently interest in pharmaceuticals as potential environmental contaminants has increases significantly. This is due to the awareness of the possible adverse effects to human health and the environment caused by such contaminants. Within the past few years, the highly prescribed antidepressants, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI), have received attention as their occurrence in the environment has been recently documented. Prior to this, there was very little known about the ecotoxicity of SSRIs, and in particular sertraline hydrochloride. Similarly the cholesterol-lowering drugs, known as statins are among the most frequently prescribed agents in Ireland and worldwide for the treatment of coronary …

Two Tribes Go To War: An Examination Of Social Interactions At Irish Football Games, Niamh Kirwan Jan 2008

research is to explore social life and interaction in sporting space. Despite the growing interest in the field of sport consumption, the experiences of supporters have not been adequately theorised. Studies acknowledging the sport supporter tend to focus supporters as lone individuals or as rigid groups of homogenous individuals that fit into a typology. In this study, I examine the distinct ways in which supporters in small groups interact in the sporting space through mutual relationships and interdependent social networks. Maffesoli (1996) is the original proponent in the study of tribal consumption groups. Maffesoli’s (1996) work has not been used …
