Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim of this study was to investigate fasciolosis in a group of eosinophilic and non-eosinophilic cattle in eastern Turkey. All the cattle were examined for antibodies against F. hepatica by modified indirect excretory/secretory enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ES-ELISA). Of the 1200 cattle tested, 164 (13.6%) were found to be eosinophilic by absolute eosinophil counts. Out of the 164 eosinophilic cattle, 121 (73.7%) were found to be positive for fasciolosis by indirect ES-ELISA, while the rate was only 35% among the non-eosinophilic group (P < 0.001). Our data indicate that parasitic infections should be considered an important cause of eosinophilia, particularly in fasciolosis, and the indirect ES-ELISA is useful as a screening test to examine anti-F. hepatica antibodies for the diagnosis of fasciolosis in cattle.

We investigated the effect of ATP-MgCl_2 on myocardial hemodynamics and ultrastructure. In the in vitro study, left ventricular systolic and diastolic pressures and dp/dt values were significantly high in the ATP-MgCl_2 group beginning from 0.5 h of the reperfusion period. In the ATP-MgCl_2 group, at the end of the third hour, systolic and diastolic pressure values were 80.0 ± 6.2 and 75.2 ± 7.2 mmHg, while in the control group they were 18.4 ± 7.7 and 7.5 ± 6.8 mmHg (P < 0.05). In the ultrastructural analysis, myofibrillary damage was observed in both groups, but the mitochondrial pathologic changes were clearer in the control group. The electron microscopic score was 0.40 ± 0.061 in the ATP-MgCl_2 group and 1.2 ± 0.039 in the control group (P < 0.001). The hemodynamic and ultrastructural parameters of the specimens investigated in this study revealed that the usage of ATP-MgCl_2 may be beneficial in coping with ischemia-reperfusion damage. In the near future, with the help of more comprehensive studies, ATP-MgCl_2 is expected to be used routinely because of its potential benefits.

This report describes an outbreak of Listeria ivanovii-induced abortion in sheep in the Kars region. In a flock of 120 sheep raised in Taşlıdere, a village in the region of Arpaçay, in Kars, some ewes in the last stages of gestation aborted in March, 2004. Necropsy was conducted on 5 aborted foetuses. Livers of the aborted foetuses showed diffuse necrotic foci. This study was conducted to compare the growth and survival characteristics of crossbred lambs produced by mating Kıvırcık ewes with German Black-Headed Mutton (GBM) x Kıvırcık (F_2) rams, GBM x Merino (F_2) rams, as well as the growth and survival characteristics of purebred Kıvırcık lambs. The data were obtained from 59 (GBM x Kıvırcık) x Kıvırcık, 59 (GBM x Merino) x Kıvırcık, and 60 purebred Kıvırcık lambs. The birth weights of (GBM x Kıvırcık) x Kıvırcık, (GBM x Merino) x Kıvırcık, and purebred Kıvırcık lambs were 4.08, 4.32, and 3.85 kg, respectively. The differences of birth weight between the genotype …
