Identification Of Porphyromonas Gingivalis From The Pocket With Advanced Periodontitis By Pcr Method, Jintakorn Kuvatanasuchati

Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal

Objective The purpose of this study was to confirm identification of Porphyromonas gingivalis by using the PCR method. Materials and methods Black pigmented Bacteroides (No.1, No.2 and No.3) were isolated from the pockets of three advanced periodontitis patients who came to Periodontal Department of Faculty of Dentistry, Chulalongkorn University for periodontal disease treatment. These bacterias were cultured on brain heart infusion-yeast extract blood (sheep) agar [BHI blood agar] in anaerobic chamber which contained 80% N2, 10% H2 and 10% CO2 at 37°C for 10 days. After these bacterias had already grown. DNA was isolated and amplified for using the PCR …

Implant Replacement Of Bilateral Congenitally Missing Maxillary Lateral Incisors: A Case Report, Wantanee Pruksawangwong

Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal

A case of patient with bilateral congenitally missing maxillary lateral incisors which require an interdisciplinary treatment is presented. The orthodontic treatment is for correcting the alignment and axial inclination of the teeth and preparing appropriated space between the maxillary central incisors and canines. Then the implants are albe to restore esthetically and efficiently. This article describes the considerations regarding the proportion of the crowns and implants, the amount of space between the crowns and roots of the adjacent teeth, the quantity and quality of the alveolar bone, the periodontal health, and the orthodontic technique.

Fluoride Promotes Human Pulp Cell Proliferation Through P38 Kinase Pathway, Kritchai Bespinyowong, Prasit Pavasant May 2006

Fluoride Promotes Human Pulp Cell Proliferation Through P38 Kinase Pathway, Kritchai Bespinyowong, Prasit Pavasant

Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal

Objective To study the effects of fluoride on cell proliferation in cultured human pulp cells and investigate the mechanism of fluoride on cell proliferation. Materials and methods Effect of fluoride on cell proliferation was analysed by methylene blue and MTT assay. For determining the intracellular pathway, cells were treated with fluoride in the presence of MAPK inhibitors. The results were statistically analysed by using One-way Analysis of Variance. Results The cytotoxic effect of fluoride on human pulp cells was observed at ≥ 25 ppm (p < 0.05). In contrast, 1 and 10 ppm of fluoride significantly stimulated dental pulp cell proliferation (p < 0.05). The proliferative effect of fluoride may occur through p38 kinase since the inhibitor of p38 kinase inhibited fluoride-induced dental pulp cell proliferation. Conclusion Fluoride concentration higher than 25 ppm has cytotoxic effect on human pulp cells, whereas fluoride at 1 and 10 ppm promote human pulp cell proliferation via p38 kinase.

The changes in cell viability were observed by inverted phase contrast microscopy and 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. Results MTT assay showed that mangosteen extract at the concentrations of 200 µg/ml or less did not significantly affect cell viability. The extract at 400 µg/ml did not affect the number of viable cells …

Factors Influencing Friction In Orthodontics, Rugrath Sitdhichoke, Sirima Petdachai May 2006

Factors Influencing Friction In Orthodontics, Rugrath Sitdhichoke, Sirima Petdachai

Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal

In fixed orthodontic therapy, tooth must be moved during leveling, alignment or retraction into an extraction area. During these procedures, friction is considered between archwires and brackets in sliding mechanics. Friction must be controlled so that the proper force can be applied to obtain tooth movement, to maintain anchorage and to optimize biologic tissue response. The purpose of this article is to review studies which have been carried out to evaluate the factors that influence frictional resistance. These include brackets, orthodontic wires and biologic factors. These factors should be considered for proper tooth movement in orthodontic treatment.

A Maxillary Protraction Facemask Therapy, Chawasri Poonvitikul, Sirima Petdachai Jan 2006

A Maxillary Protraction Facemask Therapy, Chawasri Poonvitikul, Sirima Petdachai

Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal

Protraction facemask has been used in the treatment of growing patients with Class III malocclusion derived from maxillary deficiency. Both maxillary complex and upper anterior teeth can be displaced anteriorly by this protraction. Maxillary expansion is advocated to compensate the constriction at the anterior portion of the maxillary during traction even without pretreatment narrow maxilla. A forward and downward protraction force from the anterior portion of maxilla can minimize the counterclockwise rotation of the midface. The facemask therapy may be the most effective for orthopedic change in patients before the peak of puberty. Orthopedic effects require greater forces than do …

Form And Widths Of The Dental Arch, Saknarin Krabuanrat, Piyarat Apivatanagul Jan 2006

Form And Widths Of The Dental Arch, Saknarin Krabuanrat, Piyarat Apivatanagul

Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal

One of the most important things in orthodontic treatment planning is to establish the dental arch form, which consists of anteroposterior position of the incisors and dental arch widths: intercanine width and intermolar width. Today, it is known that only a limited amount of posterior dental arch width change is possible, and a change in the region of the canines is particularly limited. In this article, basic knowledge of form and widths of dental arch were reviewed. Treatment considerations to determine stability of the form and widths of dental arch were also mentioned.
