Rat/Mgra, A Regulator Of Autolysis, Is A Regulator Of Virulence Genes In Staphylococcus Aureus, Susham Ingavale, Willem Van Wamel, Thanh T. Luong, Chia Y. Lee, Ambrose L. Cheung

Dartmouth Scholarship

We have previously identified mgrA (rat) as a regulator of autolysis in Staphylococcus aureus. Besides its effect on autolytic activity, we recently found alterations in the expression of regulator and target virulence genes in the mgrA mutant. Northern analysis and transcription fusion assays showed that inactivation of mgrA has led to the downregulation of RNAIII of agr and hla and upregulation of sarS and spa. Although both SarA and agr are activators of α-hemolysin and a repressors of protein A synthesis, we found that the transcription of sarA was not affected in the mgrA mutant and …

Effect Of Carotid Stenosis On The Development Of Subarachnoid Hemorrhage: An Experimental Study, Canan Atalay, Ednan Bayram, Mehmet Dumlu Aydin, Mehmet Bi̇li̇ci̇, Zafer Okumuş, Cemal Gündoğdu

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) may be seen after the invasive procedures of occlusive carotid artery disease. The objective of this experimental study is to investigate the effect of bilateral common carotid artery ligation (BCCAL) on the development of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH).Twenty Wistar adult rats (150-200g) were randomly divided into two groups, as follows: (ı) Control group (without BCCAL, n = 5), (II) BCCAL group (n = 15). All rats were sacrificed three months later. The basilar artery with surrounding tissue was removed from the cranium and processed for paraffin embedding. Histopathological and Stereological examinations of the basilar artery were made. During …

The Effects Of Qualitative And Quantitative Protein Malnutrition On Cecal Microbiota In Wistar Rats With Or Without Neutrophil Suppression, Hali̇l Biyik, Muharrem Balkaya, Hümeyra Ünsal, Cengi̇z Ünsal

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Gastrointestinal microbiota has been claimed to be affected by the diet consumed. In this study the effects of severe qualitative and quantitative protein malnutrition on cecal microbiota of male Wistar rats with or without neutrophil depletion were investigated. A total of 43 animals were divided randomly into 7 groups. Group I (control) was given a complete chow diet, groups II, III and IV received almost protein free (N-free) diet and groups V, VI and VII received a 20% gelatin containing diet for 35 days ad libitum. In addition, groups I, II and V were given physiologic saline, groups III and …

The Effects Of Fenfluramine On Blood And Tissue Serotonin (5-Hydroxytryptamine) Levels In Rats, İbrahi̇m Pi̇ri̇nçci̇, Ahmet Ateşşahi̇n, İzzet Karahan Jan 2005

The Effects Of Fenfluramine On Blood And Tissue Serotonin (5-Hydroxytryptamine) Levels In Rats, İbrahi̇m Pi̇ri̇nçci̇, Ahmet Ateşşahi̇n, İzzet Karahan

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of fenfluramine (FEN) administered at single and repeated doses on brain, stomach and plasma serotonin (5-Hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) levels in rats. FEN was injected intraperitoneally at single doses (1, 3 and 10 µmol kg^{-1}) and given orally at repeated doses (1.25, 5 and 10 mg kg^{-1}) for 21 days. The tissues and plasma samples were collected 20, 40, 80 and 160 minutes after the single dose administrations and 4 h after the last dose administration in repeated experiments. In addition, the rats treated with the dose of 1.25 mg kg^-1 were …

Duration Of Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetes Differentially Affects P38-Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinase (Mapk) Phosphorylation In Renal And Vascular Dysfunction, H. Chen, S. Brahmbhatt, A. Gupta, Avadhesh C. Sharma Jan 2005

Background: In the present study we tested the hypothesis that progression of streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes (14-days to 28-days) would produce renal and vascular dysfunction that correlate with altered p38- mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38-MAPK) phosphorylation in kidneys and thoracic aorta. Methods: Male Sprague Dawley rats (350-400 g) were randomized into three groups: sham (N = 6), 14-days diabetic (N = 6) and 28-days diabetic rats (N = 6). Diabetes was induced using a single tail vein injection of STZ (60 mg/kg, I.V.) on the first day. Rats were monitored for 28 days and food, water intake and plasma glucose levels were …
