Renal Involvement In Systemic Lupus Erythematosus In Pakistan, Malik Anas Rabbani, Muhammad Hammad Tahir, Bilal Karim Siddiqui, Bushra Ahmad, A Shamim, Syed Mansoor Shah, Aasim Ahmad

Section of Nephrology

Objective: To find the prevalence of lupus nephritis, delineate its clinical, immunological and therapeutic characteristics and compare them with the data worldwide.PATIENTS AND Methods: Between 1985 and 2001, 198 patients with SLE fulfilling the clinical and laboratory criteria of the American Rheumatism Association (ARA) admitted to the hospital were studied by means of a retrospective review of their records. Results: Renal involvement was found in 89 (45%) patients. Biopsy showed lupus nephritis in 42 patients; there were 9 male and 33 females. Mean age at initial presentation was 27 years and mean duration of follow-up was 2 .3 years. The histological …

Religious Problem Solving And Coping With End Stage Renal Disease, Eva Bella Martinez Jun 2005

Religious Problem Solving And Coping With End Stage Renal Disease, Eva Bella Martinez

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This study examined the impact of end-stage renal disease life-related couple/family stressors and strains on marital satisfaction, parental satisfaction, life satisfaction, and depression on end-stage renal disease patients and their spouses, as well as quality of life for patients. Also, it examined the moderating effects of three styles of religious problem-solving on the relationship between the ESRD couple/family stressors and strains and the outcome variables. Data included a sample of two hundred subjects and their spouses. Subjects were recruited from seven dialysis centers in southern California. Both patients and spouses were given survey questionnaires (i.e. Personal History Inventory, Religious Problem-Solving …

Serum Creatinine As Marker Of Kidney Function In South Asians: A Study Of Reduced Gfr In Adults In Pakistan, Tazeen H. Jafar, Christopher H. Schmid, Andrew S. Levey May 2005

Serum Creatinine As Marker Of Kidney Function In South Asians: A Study Of Reduced Gfr In Adults In Pakistan, Tazeen H. Jafar, Christopher H. Schmid, Andrew S. Levey

Section of Nephrology

Migrant populations of South Asian origin have a higher risk for chronic kidney disease than the native whites. Several formulas have been developed to estimate kidney function from serum creatinine concentration. However, none of these has been validated in the South Asian population, which generally has different muscle mass composition than whites. A population-based cross-sectional study was performed on 262 individuals who were aged > or = 40 yr in Karachi, Pakistan. Reduced GFR was defined as creatinine clearance (Ccr) measured in 24-h urine collection of /min per 1.73 m2. Creatinine excretion was compared with age- and gender-matched white individuals by …

Multiple Metabolic Hits Converge On Cd36 As Novel Mediator Of Tubular Epithelial Apoptosis In Diabetic Nephropathy., Katalin Susztak, Emilio Ciccone, Peter Mccue, Kumar Sharma, Erwin P Böttinger Feb 2005

Multiple Metabolic Hits Converge On Cd36 As Novel Mediator Of Tubular Epithelial Apoptosis In Diabetic Nephropathy., Katalin Susztak, Emilio Ciccone, Peter Mccue, Kumar Sharma, Erwin P Böttinger

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Diabetic nephropathy (DNP) is a common complication of type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus and the most common cause of kidney failure. While DNP manifests with albuminuria and diabetic glomerulopathy, its progression correlates best with tubular epithelial degeneration (TED) and interstitial fibrosis. However, mechanisms leading to TED in DNP remain poorly understood.

METHODS AND FINDINGS: We found that expression of scavenger receptor CD36 coincided with proximal tubular epithelial cell (PTEC) apoptosis and TED specifically in human DNP. High glucose stimulated cell surface expression of CD36 in PTECs. CD36 expression was necessary and sufficient to mediate PTEC apoptosis induced …

Expression Of Hepatocyte Growth Factor And Its Receptor C-Met, Correlates With Severity Of Pathological Injury In Experimental Alcoholic Liver Disease., El-Nasir Lalani, Richard Poulsom, Gordon Stamp, Franz Fogt, Peter Thomas, Amin A. Nanji Jan 2005

Expression Of Hepatocyte Growth Factor And Its Receptor C-Met, Correlates With Severity Of Pathological Injury In Experimental Alcoholic Liver Disease., El-Nasir Lalani, Richard Poulsom, Gordon Stamp, Franz Fogt, Peter Thomas, Amin A. Nanji

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Expression of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) and its receptor, c-met is up-regulated in various forms of liver injury. This study evaluated the relationship between HGF and c-met expression and pathological changes in experimental alcoholic liver disease. Rats (5 per group) were fed ethanol and a diet containing saturated fat corn oil or fish oil by intragastric infusion. Dextrose isocalorically replaced ethanol in controls. In a second set of experiments, Kupffer cells, endothelial cells and hepatocytes were isolated from rats in each group. Pathological evaluation and analysis of HGF and c-met expression were performed in liver and the different cell types. …
