Background
We analyzed the causes and results of utilization of critical careservices in the special care unit in patients after surgical proceduresperformed by the hepatobiliary surgical service during a 23-month period.
Results
Thirty-two of 537 patients (6.0%) required postoperative admissionto the special care unit. Twenty-one patients were admitted directly fromoperating room or from recovery room because of inability to wean fromventilator (n = 10), hypovolemic shock (n = 4), myocardialischemia or infarction (n = 2), sepsis (n = 2), uppergastrointestinal bleeding (n = 2), and acute renal failure (n=1). Eleven postoperative patients were …

Growth And Mortality Of Mussels ( Mytilus Edulisl.) Reared Inlantern Nets In Loch Kishorn, Scotland, Sedat Karayücel, Ismi̇han Karayücel
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
One-year old rope grown mussels ( Mytilus edulis L.) were held in experimental lantern nets at 2 m and 6 m depths in Loch Kishorn on the west coast of Scotland. Growth, mortality and shell morphology were monitored from May 1993 to August 1994. Water temperature, salinity, transparency and food availability were also determined. These showed a clear seasonal cycle, in consequence, growth of mussels was relatively rapid from May to November and very slow during the rest of the year. Depth had a insignificant effect on shell length and tissue growth (P>0.05) due to similar environmental factors. Shell …

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of post-partum separation of lambs from their mothers for various periods of time on the behaviour of lambs and ewe, lamb mortality, and lamb growth. Forty-seven Karayaka ewes that had given birth within the past month and their 61 lambs were used. Ewes and their offspring were allocated into three groups. In the first group (control), lambs were always kept with their mothers. In the second and third groups, lambs were kept with their mothers for 6 hours and 1 hour, respectively, and separated from their mothers for 12-16 …
