Thyroid hormone plays an essential role in mammalian brain maturation and function, in large part by regulating the expression of specific neuronal genes. In this tissue, the type 2 deiodinase (D2) appears to be essential for providing adequate levels of the active thyroid hormone 3,5,3′-triiodothyronine (T3) during the developmental period. We have studied the regional and cellular localization of D2 mRNA in the brain of 15-day-old neonatal rats. D2 is expressed in the cerebral cortex, olfactory bulb, hippocampus, caudate, thalamus, hypothalamus, and cerebellum and was absent from the white matter. Ultrastructure Of The May-Hegglin Anomaly, T Siddiqui

Section of Internal Medicine

Ultrastructural features of the leucocytes in two patients suffering from the May-Hegglin anomaly were studied using electron microscopy. In both the cases, electron dense material parallel to the long axis of the inclusions were noted. Platelet ultrastructure was normal. A review of the literature indicates that the May-Hegglin anomaly is a heterogeneous condition both ultrastructurally and clinically.

A novel polymorphism in the extracellular domain 2 (EC2) of FcgammaRIIIA affects ligand binding by natural killer (NK) cells and monocytes from genotyped homozygous normal donors independently of receptor expression. The nonconservative T to G substitution at nucleotide 559 predicts a change of phenylalanine (F) to valine (V) at amino acid position 176. Compared with F/F homozygotes, FcgammaRIIIa expressed on NK cells and monocytes in V/V homozygotes bound more IgG1 and IgG3 despite identical levels of receptor expression. In response to a standard aggregated human IgG stimulus, FcgammaRIIIa engagement on NK cells from V/V (high-binding) homozygotes led to a larger …

OBJECTIVES: This study examines the impact of the condom availability program in New York City public high schools by comparing rates of sexual activity and condom use for New York students and similar students in Chicago. METHODS: A total of 7119 students from 12 randomly selected New York schools and 5738 students from 10 Chicago schools participated in a cross-sectional survey. RESULTS: New York students, compared with Chicago students, reported equal rates of sexual activity but higher rates of condom use at last intercourse (odds ratio [OR] = 1.36). A significant infection rate of bovine TB in the deer population of the northeastern lower peninsula poses a potential risk to several important values including public health, United States Department of Agriculture (U.S.D.A.) TB-free accreditation for Michigan cattle, wildlife health, wildlife-related recreation and tourism and economic stability in several sectors. A risk assessment study by the U.S. D.A. Centers for Epidemiology and Animal Health (Fort Collins, CO) predicted that if no changes were made in the management of the affected free-ranging deer population, the TB prevalence (compared to the current prevalence of 2.3%). During an infection of nonneuronal cells, bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1) gene expression proceeds in a well-defined cascade. Products of immediate-early (IE) genes are expressed first, and they activate expression of early (E) and late (L) genes. Although the same cascade is assumed to occur during an infection of neurons in trigeminal ganglia (TG) of cattle, no experimental data is available to support this hypothesis. Consequently, we analyzed BHV-1 gene expression in bovine TG at 1, 2, 4, 7, and 15 days postinfection (dpi). Infectious virus was detected in ocular swabs from 1 to 7 dpi but not 15 dpi. By …

The Place Of Persons With Disabilities In Rotuman Society, Jan Rensel, Alan Howard

In Rotuma, as in many other small, face-to-face societies, persons with disabilities are treated not as members of categories based on their conditions, but as individuals having whole constellations of characteristics and interpersonal histories. Their roles are not scripted on the basis of disabilities, but patterned by a number of key cultural principles that guide all relationships, including notions of immanent justice for wrongdoing, expectations of generosity and reciprocity, personal autonomy, and concern for family honor. Case studies and analyses of exchange interactions are presented to illustrate these points.

Consumer Debt, Alcohol Use, And Domestic Violence In Guam, Thomas K. Pinhey, Daniel A. Lennon, Nicholas A. Pinhey

Pacific Studies

Using community-level economic and crime data derived from secondary sources, this brief study explores the relationships between consumer debt, alcohol use, and domestic violence in Guam for the years 1982 through 1993. The results of the analysis indicate that higher levels of consumer debt are strongly related to greater alcohol consumption and domestic violence, thus suggesting that “financial strain” may be an important variable for understanding patterns of substance abuse and family violence in Guam. The implications of these results for theory and future research on substance abuse and domestic violence are also discussed.

QSR1 is an essential Saccharomyces cerevisiae gene, which encodes a 60S ribosomal subunit protein required for joining of 40S and 60S subunits. Truncations of QSR1 predicted to encode C-terminally truncated forms of Qsr1p do not substitute for QSR1 but do act as dominant negative mutations, inhibiting the growth of yeast when expressed from an inducible promoter. The dominant negative mutants exhibit a polysome profile characterized by 'half-mer' polysomes, indicative of a subunit joining defect like that seen in other qsr1 mutants (D. P. Eisinger, F. A. Exposure of low-passage endothelial cells in culture to nonlethal amounts of asbestos, but not refractory ceramic fiber-1, increases cell motility and gene expression. These changes may be initiated by the fibers mimicking matrix proteins as ligands for receptors on the cell surface. In the present study, 1- to 3-hr exposures of endothelial cells to 5 mg/cm2 of chrysotile asbestos caused marked cell elongation and motility. However, little morphological change was seen when chrysotile was added to cells pretreated with either mannosamine to prevent assembly of glycophosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored receptors or with herbimycin A to inhibit tyrosine kinase activity. Situation awareness (SA) is most commonly defined as "the perception of the elements in the environment within a volume of time and space, the comprehension of their meaning, and the projection of their status in the near future" (Endsley, 1995, p. 36). While researching this construct, we were continuously faced with several terms that, like SA, have themselves never been uniformly defined. หลักฐานการติดเชื้อพาร์โวไวรัสตามธรรมชาติในลูกสุนัข ช่วงอายุ 4-8 สัปดาห์, นิภัทรา เทพวัลย์, ธงชัย จันทร์ลอยเมฆ, คณิศักดิ์ อรวีระกุล, สุวิทย์ กัมทรทิพย์

ศึกษาหาหลักฐานการติดเชื้อพาร์โวไวรัสตามธรรมชาติในลูกสุนัขช่วงอายุ 4-8 สัปดาห์ จากแม่สุนัขซึ่งมีภูมิคุ้มกันต่อเชื้อพาร์โวไวรัสที่ศูนย์การสุนัขทหาร โดยตรวจหาแอนติเจน ในอุจจาระด้วยวิธี Hemagglutination Test และระดับแอนติบอดี้ต่อเชื้อพาร์โวไวรัสในซีรั่ม ด้วยวิธี Hemagglutination Inhibition Test จากตัวอย่างอุจจาระและซีรั่มจากลูกสุนัขจำนวน 19 ตัวที่อายุ 4, 6 และ 8 สัปดาห์ รวม 57 ตัวอย่าง ผลการศึกษาพบหลักฐานแอนติเจนที่ ตกตะกอนเม็ดเลือดแดงสุกรในอุจจาระลูกสุนัขได้อย่างน้อยตั้งแต่ที่ 4 สัปดาห์ขึ้นไปในลูกสุนัขทั้งสิ้น 89.47% (17/19) และพบการเพิ่มขึ้นของระดับแอนติบอดี้ต่อพาร์โวไวรัส ทั้งที่อายุ 6 และ 8 สัปดาห์เมื่อเทียบกับที่ 4 และ/หรือ 6 สัปดาห์เป็น 26.32% (5/19) และ 47.37% (9/19) ตามลำดับ ตลอดการศึกษาไม่พบอาการใด ๆ ที่เป็นผลจากการติดเชื้อ พาร์โวไวรัส ผลดังกล่าวแสดงถึงหลักฐานการติดเชื้อพาร์โวไวรัสตามธรรมชาติซึ่งเกิดขึ้นในลูกสุนัขที่แม่มีภูมิคุ้มกันต่อโรคพาร์โวไวรัส

Intimacy deficits and loneliness recently have been theorized as influential factors in the etiology and maintenance of sexually offending behaviors, although to date there has been a lack of empirical research conducted to address this proposition. The present study examined intimacy defi cits, fear of intimacy, and loneliness among intrafamilial child molesters, rapists, nonsexually offending inmates, and a community sample of adult males. The child molesters and rapists reported greater overall intimacy deficits than did the nonsexually offending inmates and community controls, with rapists reporting the greatest intimacy deficits. In recent years, it has become apparent that minerals can trigger alterations in gene expression by initiating signaling events upstream of gene transactivation. These cascades may be initiated at the cell surface after interaction of minerals with the plasma membrane either through receptorlike mechanisms or integrins. Alternatively, signaling pathways may be stimulated by active oxygen species generated both during phagocytosis of minerals and by redox reactions on the mineral surface. QSR1 is a recently discovered, essential Saccharomyces cerevisiae gene, which encodes a 60S ribosomal subunit protein. Thirty-one unique temperature-sensitive alleles of QSR1 were generated by regional codon randomization within a conserved 20-amino-acid sequence of the QSR1-encoded protein. The temperature-sensitive mutants arrest as viable, large, unbudded cells 24 to 48 h after a shift to 37 degrees C.
