Changing Relationships Between Self-Help Groups And Mental Health Professionals: Shifting Ideology And Power, Vic Constantino, Geoffrey Nelson

Using qualitative methods, we studied current and desired relationships between members of mental health consumer/survivor and family self-help groups and mental health professionals. Two major themes, professional ideology and practices of power and control, captured both the positive and negative aspects of the relationships the participants had experienced. To move toward more desired relationships, participants suggested education and ongoing interaction between self-helpers and professionals are needed to change professional ideology and practices, while consumer/survivor and family participation and involvement in decision making are required to reduce the power imbalance between self-helpers and professionals. Partnerships Between Community Residents And Professionals: Issues Of Power And Social Class Across The Lifespan Of Neighbourhood Organizations, Barbara Derksen, Geoffrey Nelson

We described a qualitative sutdy of four neighbourhood centres jointly created by a sponsoring agency and community members to prevent problems in the lives of chidlren and adults in these neighbourhoods. Individual and focus group interviews with staff, community members, and other agency workers were used to develop an understanding of issues involved at various stages across the lifespan of these settings. Two tensions noted in this process were between community members and professionals from the sponsoring organization and between lower-class and middle-class community members. We discuss the implications of these findigns for practice in community development.

Double relative deprivation, which has been virtually ignored in research on relative deprivation, was expected to predict women's collective action over and above egoistic and collective deprivation. The role of socio-political resources in perceiving deprivation and participation in action was also investigated. Female students (N=164) completed a questionnaire designed to assess their perceptions of egoistic, collective, double relative deprivation (defined as the interaction between egoistic and collective deprivation), resource availability and participation in collective action. Hierarchical regression analyses indicated that double relative deprivation predicted collective action over and above egoistic and collective relative deprivation, and that resource availability also uniquely …

This study was undertaken to investigate feminist therapeutic practice from the practitioner's perspective. The initial goals of this study were to explore practitioner perspectives on feminism and power and their impact upon feminist practice. Additionally, the researcher sought to discover how practitioners found congruence between their feminist-informed values and therapeutic practice and if, in the course of practicing as a feminist, ethical dilemmas arose. Based on a sample of eight women who identified themselves as feminist practitioners, the researcher used semi-structured open-ended interviews to investigate the participants' beliefs, values and perspectives on clinical practice. The impact on children who witness mother-assault was conceptualized as an expanded posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and an exploratory research study testing this formulation was carried out. The current conceptualization was based in part on the work of V. Wolfe and associates who utilized a model whereby a number of mediating factors were thought to determine adjustment to traumatic. An important part of their model was the utilization of the Type I and II trauma typologies of Terr (1990, 1991). These typologies were used to measure the PTSD symptoms of children in response to the severity and course of mother-assault. …

A qualitative study of 21 at-risk adolescents led to the development of a grounded theory which shows that mental health and resilience depends on the acceptance of teenagers experiences for their self-definitions and the power they exercise in the social discourse which constructs these defining labels. Using the metaphor of drift, this paper explores how teens seek acceptance for the most powerful personal labels accessible to them. The process of empowerment is conceptualized as a protective mechanism giving a young person power in the social construction of his or her identity. The purpose of the present investigation was to explore the possible associations between marital affect and cognitive complexity of discourse within an attachment context. Attachment theorists (e.g., Bowlby, 1982) have proposed that bonds formed between infants and their parents are internalized as working models of self and others and continue to influence the infant in relationships even into adulthood. In particular, possible longitudinal influences of variations in early attachment experiences may be seen in the discussions of couples about relationship issues. The ability of the potential anti-addictive agent ibogaine to module the morphine-induced modification of quinine and sucrose palatability was assessed utilizing the taste reactivity test. Ibogaine (40mg/kg) was administered 24 hr prior to an injection of morphine (2 mg/kg), followed 30 min later by a 5 min intraoral infusion of 0.05% quinine solution (Experiment 1) or 10% sucrose solution (Experiment 2). Treatment with morphine enhanced the palatability of both quinine and sucrose solution. Morphine reduced the aversiveness of quinine solution during the 5 min of testing and enhanced ingestive responding to sucrose solution, however, only during min 1 of the …
