Low Toxicity Radiation Sensitizer, Barton L. Bergquist, James C. Chang Dec 1984

Low Toxicity Radiation Sensitizer, Barton L. Bergquist, James C. Chang

Patents (University of Northern Iowa)

Bis(5-aminofluorescein)dichloroplatinum(II), and substituted fluoresceinamine derivatives of this compound are disclosed as highly effective radiation sensitizers which enhance the effect of ionizing radiation on tumor cells, but uniquely do so without the usual accompanying high toxicity level to surrounding normal cells. A direct combination, single step reaction synthesis is disclosed for preparing bis(5-aminofluorescein)dichloroplatinum(II) from the reaction between an alkali metal tetrachloroplatinate(II) and 5-aminofluorescein.

Purification, Characterization And Distribution Of A Calmodulin-Dependent Protein Kinase From Rat Brain Cytosol, James Richard Goldenring Dec 1984

Purification, Characterization And Distribution Of A Calmodulin-Dependent Protein Kinase From Rat Brain Cytosol, James Richard Goldenring

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Tubulin is a major endogenous substrate for Ca('2+)- calmodulin-dependent kinase activity in rat brain cytosol. This dissertation details the purification and characterization of a calmodulin-dependent tubulin kinase from rat brain cytosol. The kinase, purified from chelated brain cytosol by sequential chromatography on phosphocellulose, calmodulin-affinity resin, and Fractogel TSK-55F, contains two calmodulin-binding, autophosphorylating subunits of 52,000 and 63,000 daltons, designated rho and sigma, respectively. The kinase holoenzyme complex has a native molecular weight of 600,000 daltons. Both kinase subunits demonstrate isoelectric points near neutrality. The kinase phosphorylated microtubule-associated protein 2, alpha tubulin and beta tubulin as major substrates. Calmodulin-dependent phosphorylation of …

Caring For The Sick Poor: The State Almshouse At Bridgewater, 1854-1887, Lucille O'Connell

Bridgewater Review

The number of helpless poor in Massachusetts increased during the period of the 1840s, and the problem was greatly magnified by Irish immigration to the United States. Too large a problem to be solved on the local level, the Board of Commissioners of Alien Passengers recommended, in 1852, that the State establish three almshouses. Accordingly, the institutions were established at Bridgewater, Monson to the west, and Tewksbury to the north of Boston, and were opened in May 1854. By the end of the first year the number of inmates far exceeded expectations.

Research Issues Surrounding Holocaust Survivors: Adaptability And Aging, Benjamin J. Hodgkins, Richard L. Douglass Dec 1984

Research Issues Surrounding Holocaust Survivors: Adaptability And Aging, Benjamin J. Hodgkins, Richard L. Douglass

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The thesis of this article is that, in spite of a large body of literature on the subject, a significant need exists for sociological research on the long-term consequences of the trauma experienced by survivors of Nazi concentration camps. Most of what is known about the adjustment of Holocaust survivors is based upon limited case histories of survivors who sought psychiatric aid, or requested assistance in qualifying for indemnification payments from the German government. The social and psychological dynamics of successful adjustment to life after the traumatic Holocaust experience by the majority of survivors has largely been ignored. Reasons for …

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Register Of Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Type 2 Syndromes In The United Kingdom, Bruce A. J. Ponder

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

A collaborative group for the study of multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 (MEN-2) syndromes comprised of clinicians and laboratory scientists has been set up in the United Kingdom. Its aims are 1) to provide a basis for collaborative work on MEN-2; 2) to establish a register of patients; 3) and specifically to conduct studies aimed at defining the best policy for screening the families of apparently sporadic patients, to establish radioimmunoassays for family screening, and to identify large kindreds for genetic linkage studies using DNA polymorphisms.
