Implementing A Comprehensive Tobacco-Cessation Program For Patients With Tobacco Use Disorder, Jalen Eaton

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Background: Individuals who use tobacco are at an increased risk for the development of heart disease, congestive heart failure, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Tobacco use is one of the most preventable causes of death in the world.

Purpose: The focus of the quality improvement project was to improve access to tobacco cessation resources in patients with tobacco use disorder at a primary care clinic.

Methods: Weekly stakeholder meetings were held to ensure the validity of the project. The plan, do, study, act (PDSA) model of continuous quality improvement guided the project. A comprehensive tobacco-cessation program including informational materials and …

A Quality Improvement Project: Improving The Clinical Practice For Assessing Hemoglobin A1c On Admission In Diabetic Ketoacidosis Patients Admitted To The Intensive Care Unit, Tiara Lawson

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Background: Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a life-threatening problem that affects people with diabetes. Early treatment and adherence to guidelines are crucial in preventing DKA. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) publishes annual guidelines for effective DKA management, and the Education Recognition Program National Benchmarks program can help maintain adherence to the published guidelines. Improving the intensive care unit (ICU) admission process enhances the quality of care to DKA patients and improves progress towards national benchmarks.

Purpose: This quality improvement project aimed to improve Hemoglobin A1C (HbA1c) evaluations in DKA patients admitted to the ICU.

Methods: The intervention of triggering HbA1c orders …

Reducing No-Show Rates In An Outpatient Gi Endoscopy Lab, Mwaba Chisela Jul 2024

Reducing No-Show Rates In An Outpatient Gi Endoscopy Lab, Mwaba Chisela

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Background: Patients who do not attend their scheduled appointments cost the healthcare industry approximately $150 billion annually. They are at higher risk of missed diagnoses, delay in care, and increased morbidity and mortality.

Purpose: This quality improvement project aimed to determine the effectiveness of serial reminders using phone calls and electronic messaging to reduce no-shows for patients scheduled for gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy.

Methods: No-show data was retroactively analyzed from June 2023 to December 2023 and compared to post-implementation data from February 2024 to March 2024. For eight weeks, a trained staff team called patients scheduled for endoscopic procedures seven days …

Association Of Hiv Status And Other Minoritized Identities With Psychiatric Diagnoses Among Transgender And Gender Diverse Individuals In The All Of Us Research Program, Fanghui Shi Jul 2024

Association Of Hiv Status And Other Minoritized Identities With Psychiatric Diagnoses Among Transgender And Gender Diverse Individuals In The All Of Us Research Program, Fanghui Shi

Theses and Dissertations

Background: Transgender and gender diverse (TGD) people, whose gender identities or expressions differ from the sex assigned at birth, are disproportionately affected by adverse health outcomes, including various psychiatric diagnoses such as depression, anxiety, stress, and substance use disorders. The Gender Minority Stress Model emphasizes that TGD people face both proximal stressors at a personal/individual level (e.g., internalized stigma) and distal stressors at a societal level (e.g., discrimination) due to their minority status, which largely contributes to their increased risk of psychiatric diagnoses. Despite these health disparities, there is a paucity of gender identity data collected in large population-based health …

Communicating About A Nicotine Reduction Policy Among People Who Use Little Cigars And Cigarillos, Charity Afi Ntansah Jul 2024

Communicating About A Nicotine Reduction Policy Among People Who Use Little Cigars And Cigarillos, Charity Afi Ntansah

Theses and Dissertations

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has proposed rulemaking to reduce the nicotine content in cigarettes and other combusted tobacco products to non-addictive levels. A very low nicotine content (VLNC) policy aimed primarily at cigarettes could drive people to other combusted products like little cigars and cigarillos (LCCs), potentially undermining its effectiveness. Expanding the policy to include LCCs requires effective messages for people who use LCCs. This dissertation explores how to communicate the reduced nicotine policy to people who use LCCs. The research recruited four populations with the highest prevalence of cigar use: African American and White males and …

A Qualitative Study Exploring The Management & Implications Of Power Differentials Experienced By Pre-Licensed Supervisees In Clinical Supervision Settings, Joyti Jariwala Jul 2024

A Qualitative Study Exploring The Management & Implications Of Power Differentials Experienced By Pre-Licensed Supervisees In Clinical Supervision Settings, Joyti Jariwala

Dissertations

The focus in this qualitative study was to explore how power differentials in supervision create positive and negative experiences between licensed psychologists and pre-licensed doctoral students. The study results provide insight into how supervisees navigate these dynamics during supervision, which typically involves experiential learning environments in which trainees discuss progress, receive feedback, and enhance their skills. The theoretical framework grounding the study was social learning theory, which is based on the idea that individuals learn from modeling, observation, and imitation in a social context (Bandura, 1986). Reflexive thematic analysis was used to recognize similarities in findings gathered via two sets …

Interleukin 24 Induces Apoptosis Through Glycogen Synthase Kinase-3 Beta Inactivation In Prostate Cancer Cells, Sual J. Lopez, Moira Sauane Jul 2024

Interleukin 24 Induces Apoptosis Through Glycogen Synthase Kinase-3 Beta Inactivation In Prostate Cancer Cells, Sual J. Lopez, Moira Sauane

Theses and Dissertations

Interleukin 24 (IL-24) is a tumor-suppressing protein currently in clinical trials. IL-24 induces cancer-specific apoptosis by activating endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and mitochondria dysfunction. We have previously demonstrated that IL-24 leads to apoptosis in cancer cells by protein kinase A (PKA) activation in human breast cancer cells. To further understand the mechanism by which IL-24 induces apoptosis, I analyzed the role of glycogen synthase kinase-3 (GSK3), a highly conserved and normally active serine/threonine kinase in cancer cells and downstream target of PKA. The work reported here provides direct evidence that GSK3 was inhibited following IL-24 treatment in human prostate cancer …

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Of The Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex Does Not Improve Handgrip Time-To-Failure Or Alter Central Or Peripheral Hemodynamics, Yousef Qadumi Jul 2024

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Of The Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex Does Not Improve Handgrip Time-To-Failure Or Alter Central Or Peripheral Hemodynamics, Yousef Qadumi

All NMU Master's Theses

Age-related deviations to the neuromuscular system negatively impact motor function and performance. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been linked to improvements in the neuromuscular system. The purpose of this study was to determine if tDCS delivered to the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) would improve handgrip time-to-failure in adults 60 years old and older. Twenty-five participants completed five maximal voluntary contractions, followed by 20-minutes of a-tDCS or SHAM conditions. Next, participants completed a handgrip time-to-failure task by maximally squeezing an electronic handgrip dynamometer until they could no longer maintain 50% of their maximal voluntary contraction. Pairwise t-test revealed a non-significant …
