A descriptive study was conducted to determine what scientific principles were understood by nurses relative to the care of tracheostomy patients. A random sample of thirty-five nurses: twenty-four from medical-surgical units, three from pediatric units, and eight nurses from intensive care units, were selected from nurses working at two community hospitals. The interview method was used to obtain the data. An interview guide was developed from information gained in the literature review and findings of the pilot study.

The dentition and craniofacial complex of the Papago Indian was studied and compared to other groups. Casts of plaster and lateral cephalometric roentgenograms were obtained from 31 Papago Indians who were from southwestern Arizona and were attending high school at the Stewart Indian Boarding School, Carson City, Nevada. The individuals were between the ages of 13 and 20 years and had normal jaw relationships with no contiguous missing teeth. Data was obtained for the following variables from an oral examination, dental casts and tracings of the roentgenograms:

The study was guided by the null hypotheses that: (1) positive communication will create more stress than by-talk communications (2) by-talk communication will create more stress than negative communications, and (3) positive communication will create more stress than negative communication. Various individual and supplemented plant proteins were studied by the protein efficiency ratio (PER) method to determine their relative abilities to promote growth in young albino rats. Animals received a 10 percent level of protein in an otherwise adequate ration.

The size of explants in organ culture is limited by their ability to feed, respire, and excrete by diffusion. The perfusion procedure described in this report is not limited to a particular explant size. The test tissue was the adult human tooth.

In order to maintain the pulp tissue of the intact human tooth in organ culture, special precautions were taken to prevent internal necrosis and to allow diffusion of nutrients and waste products. The purpose of this study was to find out if there was a need to cleanse the genitalia in women before obtaining a clean-voided urine specimen.

The experimental method was chosen as the method of study. Two clean-voided urine specimens were obtained from twenty-six nursing students in a selected school of nursing. One clean-voided urine specimen was obtained from each subject where the genitalia had not been cleansed and compared with a second clean-voided urine specimen obtained the following day from the same subject where the genitalia had been cleansed.

An exploratory study was done on fourteen females to find the depth of the subcutaneous tissue and the length of needle required to reach the musculature. Gross body measurements were correlated with the internal measurements to develop criteria predicting the depth on other individuals. Review of the literature showed that most authorities recommend two to two and one-half inch needles, while available disposable needles range from one-half to one and one-half inches in length. This descriptive survey study was concerned with the problem of determining whether nurses were using an acceptable technique in giving intragluteal injections. With the increase of intramuscular injections the complications and injuries resulting from the intragluteal injections have increased. A review of literature disclosed a general agreement among authorities that damage to nerves and muscles in the administration of intragluteal injections could be minimized by careful selection of the injection site and the use of proper technique. Study casts and cephalograms were obtained on 18 female and 21 male Pima Indian students from the Stewart Indian Boarding School, Carson City, Nevada. Dentitional characteristics were assessed both clinically and by study casts. Cranio-facial analyses were performed by utilizing the skeletal and denture pattern variables suggested by the Downs and Riedel cephalometric analyses.

The purpose of this study was two-fold: (1) to determine the extent to which the Pima conforms to the Mongoloid master pattern, and (2) to test whether or not significant differences exist between the Pima and other Mongoloid groups which would allow discrimination.

A study comparing the 3- and 5-meal plans of food service, as used in long-stay geriatric units in San Bernardino County, have been compared. Three homes utilizing the 5-meal plan and three utilizing the 3-meal plan, to serve as controls, were chosen. A random sample of ten patients from each home was observed for three days to find the daily average nutrients in the foods served, eaten, and wasted. Also, interviews to compare factual information and attitudes were utilized for sample patients and personnel. The nutritional data was analyzed on the computer.

The purpose of this investigation was to develop a clinically feasible procedure for recording the magnitudes of glosso-maxillary forces at four palatal loci using an electronic transducer system described by Lear et, al. (1965). Of particular interest was the development of a convenient and accurate calibration device for both intraoral and extraoral application. A further object of interest was the effect an acrylic carrier plate might introduce to the magnitude of force response. Finally whether or not any significant adaptation to the carrier plate or to the transducers occurs during a reasonable testing period (six to seven hours).

Tooth movement has been documented utilizing the panoral radiograph. A positioning device, attached to the XRM Panorex X-Ray machine, was the means of patient orientation for the necessary radiographs required during the course of this investigation.

A group of ten beginning orthodontic patients, each requiring cuspid retraction, was chosen for evaluation of tooth position. Three contemporary retraction devices were employed during the course of this study. Tooth position was documented by use of panoral radiography during the retraction of these teeth.

Two investigations were attempted to add insight into the multiple problems related to staphylococcal infections. A comparison study was made of the hospital expenses of a group of hospitalized patients whose apparently clean surgical wounds developed staphylococci, and a comparable group whose surgical wounds healed without infection.

A review of approximately one hundred medical records for the pilot study revealed three instances of staphylococcal infection in apparently clean surgical wounds. The three patients required 239 days of hospitalization at a total hospital cost of $13,702.11. The study was conducted to identify some of the factors that interfere or hinder the public health nursing of the private physician's tuberculosis patient. Of fifty-one tuberculosis patients who received their care from private physicians, nineteen were interviewed. The sample was limited because patients had moved and because patient or physician refused to participate. Data were collected by use of an interview in the home. The overall findings indicated that the private physicians tuberculosis patient recognized the role of the public health nurse and the responsibility of the Health Department but resented its authority. Cephalometric and dental morphology records were obtained from forty-three contemporary Apache Indian subjects (living at the Stewart Boarding School for Indians, Carson City, Nevada) to study the cranial, facial, skeletal and dentitional patterns and compare discriminately to other contemporary North American Indian groups: Pima, Papago, Mayo and Chamula. Materials on other Indian tribes considered were obtained from studies completed at Loma Linda University. The data obtained from dental morphology analysis of the Apache Indian subjects was com pared to the Mongoloid Master Pattern (1-4) as described by Moorrees (1957).
