The Desirability Of A State High School Cross-Country Program For Utah, Charles C. Hislop

The purpose of this study was to determine if cross-country is a desirable sport for the Utah High School Activities Association to include as an interscholastic sport.

In order to determine practices, standards, and regulations of a desirable cross-country program, reasons for not including cross-country, and what the status of c ross-country is in Utah, questionnaires were sent to the states having a state sanctioned cross-country program , the states that do not have a state sanctioned cross-country program, and the track coaches in Utah.

From the data received , the following conclusions were made: (a) cross-country is a growing …

The "Smiles of the Year" winners and patients treated at Loma Linda University by the extraction or non-extraction approach were compared by linear and angular variables of skeletal, dental and soft tissue components. These findings were analyzed statistically to determine significant differences in the profile and detect the relationship between the integument and hard structures.

The following conclusions were drawn from this investigation to reflect the trend of treatment at Loma Linda University.

1. After treatment the patients had less skeletal convexity, but were more convexity than established standards.

An experimental study was conducted in a university and a convalescent hospital using eight female CVA patients with urinary incontinence to test the hypothesis that the experimental technique of icing and brushing LI dermatome skin area would increase the probability that the CVA patient would void within a prescribed time and place. A modified one group method was used in which the patient served as her own control by participating in two types of bladder training programs over an eight to twelve hour period for four consecutive days. Program A used the experimental technique; Program B omitted the experimental technique. …

Personality traits of women majoring in physical education who preferred team sports, individual sports, or dance were compared, using the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI).

No significant differences were found between the three groups on seven of the eight MMPI scales used. The dance group scored significantly more feminine on scale 5 of the MMPI than did either the team sports or individual sports group. Gymnasts and swimmers were significantly more feminine than was the track and field sub-group on this scale. Mentally retarded children demonstrate an abnormally high incidence of hearing impairment, and many, particularly those with IQs below 40, are difficult for audiologists to test. Consequently, there is great need among this population for investigating response modes and conditioning of responses to auditory stimuli. A review of the literature reveals no studies of echoic vocalization as a conditioned response mode to pure tone stimuli among the retarded.

Virtually all electron density observable in membranous elements in thin sections of buffered OsO4 -fixed tissue with electron microscopy was removed by the action of K4Fe(CN)6 in acetic acid. This reagent reacted only with Os(VIII) and not with lower oxidation states of osmium to give an insoluble crystalline precipitate, K2Fe0s(CN)6. The osmate esters originally synthesized by Criegree (8,9) were unreactive with acetic ferrocyanide. Acetic acid alone decreased membrane density of fixed sections but did not remove osmium from osmate esters.

Two critical parameters in the evaluation of the toxicological hazards of the use of carbamate pesticides are: (1) a rapid, sensitive, and precise analytical method of identification of the carbamate and its metabolites; and (2) their metabolism. A method in this study was developed whereby various carbamates and their metabolites could be chromatographed in the gaseous phase. Also, a comparative in vitro study of 15,000 g liver supernatants from human, rat, and dog was performed. The experiments reported in this dissertation were aimed at studying two problems. The first of these was the occurrence and role of DNA rings in cells of Micrococcus lysodeikticus infected by any of several bacteriophages, particularly bacteriophage N1. Difficulties in labeling vegetative N1 DNA with radioactive pre­cursors led to the second problem, utilization of nucleosides by bacteriophage N1-infected N1-lysodeikticus.

It had been shown previously that N1-infected M. lysodeikticus contains during the latent period a DNA ring of the same molecular weight as the linear DNA isolated from the intact phage.

The goal of this study was to determine if passive antibody had any effect on the development of immunological memory. The nature of the immune response to a second injection of sheep red blood cells (SRBC) following a primary immune response suppressed by passive antibody was investigated. C57Bl/Ks mice received a primary injection of SRBC and homologous anti-SRBC serum; 14 days later they were challenged with a second injection of SRBC. What moves is the essence of persuasion theory. Consequently, motivation theories interest the theorist examining persuasion theory. The theory of cognitive dissonance, in particular, suggests a meaningful approach to persuasion which offers both pragmatic and theoretical insights. Festinger’s theory of cognitive dissonance holds that when a person has two cognitions or “knowledges” which are inconsistent with on another, a state of dissonance or psychological discomfort occurs. The existence of the discomfort motivates the person to attempt to alleviate the inconsistency in order to restore the organism to a state of equilibrium or consonance. [From the Summary] Rabbits immunized to benzylpenicillin G were found to develop circulating anti-benzylpenicillin antibodies. After immunization, challenge of these animals with intravenous aqueous penicillin was ineffective in eliciting fever. However, intravenous challenge with a penicillin-rabbit serum protein conjugate led to typical hypersensitivity fevers which were roughly correlated in magnitude with titers of benzylpenicillin antibody. Febrile tolerance developed after one or two challenges with the conjugate. This form of hypersensitivity appeared to be transferable with plasma of immunized donors to normal rabbits. Finally, blood leukocytes of immunized rabbits incubated with penicillin-protected conjugate and hypersensitive serum released pyrogen in vitro while …

[From the Introduction] In chronic renal insufficiency one of the products of metabolism which accumulates in the body is the hydrogen ion. The phosphoric, sulfuric, and organic acids usually eliminated in the urine accumulate. The respiratory system can and does decrease the hydrogen ion content of the body by decreasing the amount of carbonic acid present. The accumulating hydrogen ions also react with various bases throughout the body. The net result of metabolic production, respiratory elimination, and body buffering is reflected in the blood as chronic, partially compensated, metabolic acidosis. Doehring (1968) hypothesized that a basic sequential processing deficit underlies specific reading disability. To investigate sequential processing deficits in reading retardation, four tasks involving the reproduction of stimuli in a particular sequence were administered to a group of retarded readers and a group of normal readers matched on age, sex, race, educational opportunity, sociocultural environment, and Non-Language IQ on the CTMM. The normal readers were significantly superior to the retarded readers on the four sequential processing tasks and on two other tests, vocabulary and rhyming. The two groups did not differ significantly on reversals discrimination, perceptual speed, or cumulative learning. …

Post-treatment discomfort following endodontic procedures can be caused by inflammation due to injudicious use of intracanal medicaments. Camphorated paramonochlorophenol, metacresyl acetate, and prednisolone in combination is advocated to reduce the inflammatory potential of the germicide and thus reduce the occurrence of post-operative pain. It is imperative that a medicament retain antimicrobial activity while reducing inflammatory potential.

This investigation was undertaken toward determining on an in vitro quantitative bactericidal versus bacteriostatic basis by use of the broth dilution test tube method whether camphorated paramonochlorophenol, metacresyl acetate, and prednisolone in combination retains antimicrobial activity comparable to selected other commonly used nonspecific germicides. …
