The Relationship Between Functional Articulation Disorders And Self-Monitoring Auditory Discrimination, Geraldine Hahn Allison

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between articulation disorders and self-monitoring auditory discrimination. In developing this study, 160 children, 80 males and 80 females, from kindergarten through fourth grades, were selected as subjects. They were divided into normal and defective speaking groups based on the results of a speech screening test. An Articulation and Self-Monitoring Test was administered to these children. The results showed their total number of articulation and self-monitoring errors. A series of thirteen role-taking and cognitive development tasks, taken from research done on Piaget's developmental theories, were presented to ascertain the relationship between refined role-taking skills and the level of intellectual development demonstrated by a child in Piaget's pre-operational phase (two to seven years).

The results indicated that a child in this age range is not able to remove himself from his egocentric position and utilize the concepts of decentering and reversibility in constructing a meaningful message. This would indicate a lack of role-taking skill refinement.

A Comparative Study Of The Emotional Adjustment Of Dysphasia, Shirley J. Watson

To study emotional problems of dysphasia and the resultant effect on rate and extent of language recovery, two subjects (one male and one female) were interviewed. Interviews and data were also obtained from therapists and hospital records. The results showed that emotionality and some personality factors adversely affected language recovery. This would suggest the importance of alleviating stress immediately following the lesion, during the therapy period, and throughout the home situation.

The problem of this study was to investigate Brigham Young's recreational philosophy, views, practices and activities. This historical research was conducted and information gathered from Brigham Young's journals, the Manuscript History of Brigham Young, compilations of Brigham Young's discourses, books and articles written by his daughters, accounts written by those who were present when recreational events occurred, compilations of manuscripts and documents, and interpretations of various historians who interpreted events as they read them.

Inflammation appears to be an attempt by the organism to re-establish homeostasis as a response to local reactive change in tissues following injury or irritation. This injury or irritation (whether caused by micro-organisms, toxins, antigens, etc.) first leads to an increased passage of fluid through the walls of the microvasculature, followed by stasis of circulation within the affected area. This, in turn, is followed by migration of leukocytes into the area and finally concluded by connective tissue proliferation leading to the deposition of granulation tissue.

The benefits of intravenous therapy have become more and more apparent over the years. Medications can be given rapidly with an expectant rapid onset of action. The response to the drugs or fluids can often be closely controlled by regulating the dose or rate of administration. Frequently, adequate blood and tissue levels needed to eradicate many serious infections can be reached only by this route. Intravenous therapy is an especially appropriate method when the use of the oral tract, for one reason or another, cannot be used.

A serious problem encountered in clinical practice concerns the large proportion of clients who begin therapy but for various reasons terminate treatment after only a few interviews and without the consent of the therapist. Representative studies by Kurland (1956), Haddock and Mensch (1957), and Rosenthal and Frank (1958) have emphasized the severity of this problem by indicating that most mental health clinics face the possibility of losing half of their therapy clients prematurely.

Two species of peracarid malacostracans, a mysid, Neomysis americana, and an oniscid isopod, Trachelipus cf. rathkei, were used to study the skeletomusculature system. Serial sections, whole mounts, and gross dissections were made. Coxal promotors and remotors and basal adductors and abductors were the muscle groups examined.

The promotor and remotor muscles of N. americana were found to be numerous, well developed, taking origin primarily from the dorsal thoracic wall, and extending nearly ventrally to insert in the coxa; the adductor muscle and two abductor muscles are weakly developed. In recent years renal homotransplantation has become more frequently used in the treatment of terminal renal disease in man. By carefully selecting donors with the aid of tissue compatibility tests and employing immunosuppressive drugs, these transplants have become increasingly more successful. It is true, however, that even with good tissue match-up and drug treatment rejection episodes occur, frequently within the first two-postsurgical weeks. The majority of these rejection crises may be reversed by increasing drug dosages and occasionally applying x-irradiation to the area of the transplant. In order to obtain proper muscle development in tissue culture, certain conditions must prevail. There is a delicate balance of factors, and elimination of even one of these factors leads to poor and improper development. Muscle cells grown in the absence of fibroblasts usually fail to differentiate. Therefore, proper development depends upon the presence of two cell types: myoblasts and fibroblasts. Investigators have demonstrated that the fibroblasts are necessary in that they produce collagen which is necessary for proper muscle development. A study was conducted on the alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii to determine the range and optimum growth concentrations of phosphate and nitrate. There are only a few species of algae for which this type of data is known. Inorganic nutritional data is basic to the understanding of the complexities of phytoplankton ecology and eutrophication.

The specific purpose of this investigation was to determine the effect of pH on the stability of ampicillin sodium for injection. Then, to correlate this information, a pH profile may be established to predict chemical stability with ampicillin sodium alone or when other drugs may be included in the admixture. With a pH profile the pharmacist could predict the length of time after which more than a 10 percent loss of activity would occur. An isolated perfused preparation was developed for the study of several aspects of the oculomotor system of the blue crab, Callinectes sapidus. The system for eyestalk rotation was investigated on an extracellular level. Two antagonistic pairs of muscles under visual and statocyst control were found to be responsible for stabilization and rotation of the eyestalk. The primary sensory input to the muscles appears to be from the statocysts, with both static position sense and dynamic acceleration components influencing the motor response. Two sensory feedback systems from mechanoreceptive hairs were found which influence the response of the eye stalks to statocyst …

It has become apparent in recent years that many centrally active agents possess potential anti-inflammatory capabilities. The central or peripheral mechanisms of action for these agents have not been delineated nor has their clinical efficacy baan established or refuted. The centrally active drugs, cryogenine and tetrabenazine (a benzoquinolizine derivative), previously have been shown in this laboratory to inhibit certain models of induced inflammation.
