The purpose of this investigation was to test the effect of different types of condensation, irrigants, filling materials and techniques, and variations in root canal preparation, on the success of sealing lateral and accessory canals, whose presence was determined before hand, and to relate certain inherent anatomic and morphologic characteristics of these canals to the amount of sealing obtained. Seventy-three teeth containing 85 lateral canals were instrumented and irrigated with either NaOCl, NaOCl-RC Prep or saline. The effect of tooth cleaning procedures on the gingival sulcus has been investigated. Clinically healthy gingivae from thirty-two maxillary anterior teeth of eight individuals served as experimental sites. Measurements were obtained from zinc-oxide eugenol impressions of the sulcular area. Subsequent to periods of toothbrushing, the presence of a gingival sulcus could generally be demonstrated. This was observed for the Roll as well as for the Bass method of brushing. Following no-brushing periods, during which chlorhexidine plaque control was exercised, a reduction in sulcus depths and often a disappearance of the sulcus was noted. The virulence of animal-passaged Mycoplasma arthritidis (158) was demonstrated to be enhanced in rats by growth in oleic acid-enriched broth. The virulence of a laboratory-maintained culture of the same strain was unaffected by similar growth conditions. No differences either in the immune response as measured by complement-fixing (CF) antibodies or in the histogenesis of the disease were detected when rats were injected with animal-passaged M. arthritidis grown either in the presence or in the absence of oleic acid. All tests for metabolism-inhibiting (MI) antibodies in the rat were negative.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of speaker-sex-difference on listeners' perception of vocal roughness in the vowel [ӕ] produced by normal male and female speakers. In a previous investigation by Wendahl (1963) it was found that when listening to two synthesized vowels, of equal aperiodicity, judges tended to rate the lower pitched vowel as being more vocally rough. The peripheral mechanisms involved in the cardioacceleration produced by stimulation of the canine vagosympathetic trunk have not been clearly defined. These studies were undertaken to elucidate these mechanisms.

The capacity of vagal-accelerator pathways to alter heart rate was revealed under different experimental conditions. Stimulation of the right vagosympathetic trunk resulted in bradycardia. After the stimulus was terminated, the rate transiently increased above the prestimulation value. This positive rebound was designated post vagal tachycardia (PVT). Admin­istration of atropine eliminated the initial bradycardia and revealed a tachycardia which had an onset during the stimulation. This response was designated as vagally induced tachycardia …

The pattern of frequent discharges and readmissions which characterizes most psychiatric hospitalization in this country today was described, and it was argued that the costs of this "revolving door" outweigh such benefits as might be derived from it. An alternative stepwise progression model of aftercare was proposed. This model identified community tenure as the most appropriate goal for initial aftercare efforts.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of twelve, fifty-five-minute sessions of group art therapy on the self-esteem and locus of control (LOC) of delinquent adolescent boys.

A review of the literature revealed that the development of self-esteem and an internal LOC orientation plays an important part in the total psychological development of the adolescent. Several descriptive studies have associated delinquent behavior with feelings of low self-esteem and external LOC beliefs.

This Study adapted the theoretical BAP to clinical orthodontics to observe its acceptance by patients and operators and to observe changes in occlusion during treatment.

The third stage of Begg treatment can pose difficulties to the orthodontist. Some of the undesirable developments encountered are anchorage loss, unintentional tooth tipping, extrusion, intrusion, palatal and mandibular rotation, muscular strain and profile deficiency or procumbency. In the interest of eliminating or minimizing these developments a new appliance was developed for use during the third stage of treatment.

Simply described, the appliance consisted of a rigid vestibular arch that provided anchorage for flexible extensions to each tooth. Extraoral force was directed to the maxillary rigid arch to counter anterior root torquing forces.

Buccal arch positioners (BAP) were constructed for four orthodontic patients banded with edgewise brackets, which were clinically observed during the finishing stages of treatment. At 2-4 week intervals data were collected on oral hygiene, tissue tolerance, magnitude and duration of soreness, and ease of appliance insertion and adjustments.

During the construction of the BAP, an ideal set up was found to be necessary for construction of the flexible components. It had the final location of each tooth visible so the investigator could work towards that goal.

This paper was undertaken to study the use of Cavit an[sic] an endodontic filling material.

Part I examines the physical and biological properties of Cavit. This material has a 14% linear setting expansion, which results in a very tight interphase seal. It is theorized that this type of seal in connection with a three dimensional obturation is necessary to prevent the flow of irritant from the oral environment to the periapical tissue.

The biological properties are tentatively shown to be similar to ZOE.

Five day old dark-grown seedlings of Secale cereale variety "cougar" grown at 20 C were subjected to hardening at 2 C in daily increments from 0 to 7 days, to temperature stress at -5 C for 0, 1, and 3 days, and to recovery at 20 C for 0, 1, and 3 days. Unhardened plants were killed by temperature stress but as the time of hardening increased fewer plants were killed. After 5 days of hardening all plants survived subsequent freezing stress.

Several large sources of ice nuclei were identified for the Wasatch Weather Modification Experimental Area. When stable air masses remained over the area for several days, ice nuclei concentrations as large as 1750 per liter (measured at -20 C) were found at the surface. Concentrations as large as 6000 per liter were measured with an airborne ice nuclei counter over the smelter industry of the Salt Lake Valley. Ice nuclei concentrations during storm periods were usually less than 3 per liter, indicating an excellent potential for increasing precipitation amounts over the Wasatch Mountains through the release of artificial ice nuclei. …

A potato varietal trial, the equivalent of the final step in a potato breeding and testing program was conducted in 1972 at the Farmington Experimental Sub-station, Farmington, Utah. The test consisted of twelve named varieties and two numbered selections.

This study measured the yielding capacity of new potato varieties and selections during one growing season at one location in Utah. Yields were compared with those of the older accepted varieties grown in the state and used as control or standard varieties in the varietal trial.

Proteolytic activity of Streptococcus cremoris HP, P₂ and AM₂; Streptococcus lactis-C₂, ML₈ and a commercial mixed culture was determined in skimmilk and whey by measuring the increase in Absorbency at 274.5 nm of a pH 4.6 soluble filtrate, following incubation in a 2.5% casein solution. Proteolytic activity, rate of acid production and growth rate decreased in order of C₂, HP, mixed culture, AM₂, ML₈ and P₂ at a regulated pH (6.1 - 6.2) and 32 C. Rehabilitation for patients recovering from surgical removal of the larynx should include vocational considerations with accompanying economic modifications. The literature pertaining to rehabilitative management of laryngectomees revealed numerous investigations concerned with physical restoration, remedial speech training and psycho-social adjustment, while few studies have been conducted concentrating upon vocational consequences of a laryngectomy.

[From the Summary] Reactions of cellular hypersensitivity often involve the participation of different cell types. The communication between lymphocytes and polymorphonuclear leukocytes was investigated. Human sensitized lymphocytes exposed to old tuberculin were found to have a stimulatory effect of polymorphonuclear leukocytes as indicated by the latter's increased glucose-1-14c oxidation and lysozyme production. Similar results were obtained using lymphocytes non-specifically stimulated by phytohemagglutinin. Activation of lymphocytes required a latent period (24 hour) followed by rapid stimulation of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (2 ours). These results suggest that increased glucose-1-14c oxidation and lysozyme production may be related to enhanced microbicidal activity. A possible mechanism …

This survey was designed to ascertain the health care needs of the occupants in four elderly housing projects in the Dixwell-Newhallville Area of New Haven, Connecticut. A systematic sample was taken utilizing a health questionnaire to obtain the basic data.

The essay attempts to answer a single area of concern applied to residents of one type of facility for the aged in a single city. What are the health care needs of residents in elderly housing projects? Ninety-three percent (78) of the elderly interviewed had some problems in getting "good health care." A kinesiological electromyographic study was completed to determine the relative changes in muscle activity as a person walks and stands with different degrees of knee flexion deformity. The ultimate aim was to establish criteria for appropriate preventive and corrective measures relating to knee flexion deformity.

Six different muscles were implanted with wire electrodes. The subjects performed a series of walking and standing experiments with the knee flexed at selected angles by a locking leg brace to simulate knee flexion deformity. Early identification of children with reading and learning problems seems imperative. By using early identification predictors, a high risk group of children with possible reading problems could be located. This would facilitate placement and appropriate educational strategies for this group of children. By proper placement and planning, educators then would be able to set up remedial and/or preventive programs for these children before the pattern of unsuccessful attempts and improper training becomes irreversible.
