The intent of this paper was to evaluate a precipitation hardenable stainless steel (Alloy I) as an alternate to chromium cobalt alloys (Alloy II) for orthodontic purposes.

After evaluating several heat treatments of alloy I it was determined that solution treatment produced a wire that was soft initially and had similar properties found with alloy II. After solution treatment of alloy I a 330 gram load was required to deform the wire 1.0 mm which proved to be similar to the 295 gram force required for alloy II for the same deformation and only an 11% increase in resistance of …

An Evaluation Of The Cytotoxicity Of Root Canal Filling Materials On Tissue Culture Cells In Vitro: Grossman's Sealer, N2 Permanent, Rickert's Sealer, And Cavit, Donald D. Antrim

An in vitro study using radioactively-labeled tissue culture cells was conducted over a seven-month period on Grossman's sealer, Rickert's sealer, N₂ Permanent, and Cavit to determine the lasting and relative tissue toxicity of these materials.

From this study it was observed that all materials possess lasting tissue toxicity. When relative toxicity is considered, Grossman's is the most toxic, followed by N₂, Rickert's and Cavit in descending order of toxicity. Both Grossman's and N₂ would be considered highly toxic, with Rickert's displaying moderate toxicity. Cavit would be considered mild to moderate in toxicity.

The opinions of male students at Logan Junior High School and their parents were analyzed to determine attitudes toward physical education and the existing physical education program at the school. The data was obtained by the use of a questionnaire given to 458 boys and their parents.

Students of all three grades and the parents of all three classes indicated a positive attitude toward physical education and also toward the existing physical education program at Logan Junior High School. Ninth-graders showed the most favorable attitude of the student groups toward physical education. Parents of eighth-graders were the strongest supporters from …

Data for this study was gathered by questionnaires completed by thirteen drill team directors, thirty-eight women physical education department heads at schools not having a drill team, fifty-six girls who were members of the precision drill team at their school and 416 girls who were not members of a precision drill team.

Drill team directors indicated strong feelings of success as to the organization and administration of their groups and also were positive as to the merits of precision drill teams in the junior high schools. The majority of the physical education department heads did not desire that a precision …

The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of cryotherapy versus no treatment in preventing blistering and tearing of the hands of twenty-six male college age gymnastics students at Utah State University.

The subjects were tested with a hand dynamometer to determine differences in grip strength between right and left hands. Two groups of thirteen subjects each were formed to equalize the differences in grip strength.

A correlation was established among the circumferences of teeth in a given set. This is the first step in constructing a band numbering system so that the fitting of one band (the predictor tooth) would give you the band sizes for the remaining teeth in the set. This would make possible improved efficiency for the orthodontist during band selection.

Individual sets of teeth from impressions of patients starting orthodontic treatment were measured by the use of the dentometer. The upper second bicuspid was chosen as the predictor tooth after the correlation matrices were computed.

The study was designed to determine the hour when temperature peaks occur in adult hospitalized females, and to find if factors such as age and natural or surgical menopause with replacement therapy affect the thermal circadian cycle. Previous studies indicated that the temperature peak occurs in afternoon or early evening, but there were no investigations to determine if aging, sex, or menopause affects the temperature cycle.

The sample included 62 female patients, 29 between 21 and 62 years of age, and 33 between 65 and 90 years. Each subject admitted to the study was screened against fifteen qualifying criteria. Some …

The post-active treatment position of the lower incisor in relation to APo plane, NB plane and mandibular plane was also studied to determine if it affected the post-retention stability.

The literature indicates that many diabetic patients do not adhere to their prescribed medical regimen and that there is a need to discover factors that stimulate compliant behavior. It has been proposed that the patient's decision to accept or reject treatment has many determinants. This study explored the effect of one such determinant, the locus of control (the source of the stimulus for a person's behavior). The primary purpose of the investigation was to compare the responses of white, lower-class kindergartners and first graders with white, middle-class kindergartners and first graders on the Boehm Test of Basic Concepts (BTBC) in order to determine if a statistically significant difference existed between socioeconomic level and the number of concepts correctly identified on the BTBC. The purpose of this study was to investigate the level of parents' knowledge regarding asthma.

Twenty-five parents of children who have asthma were interviewed during their child's hospitalization for status asthmaticus. Adequate knowledge about environmental control and medication was noted in the majority of the subjects but over half were unable to explain the pathological changes which caused wheezeing. While most parents appear to have adequate knowledge of medications and environmental control on which to base their decisions about their child’s care there appears to be a need for more information regarding the pathophysiology.

The spermatozoon has been the subject of numerous investigations because of its remarkable specialization for locomotion and fertilization. Although the spermatozoon of the guinea pig is relatively large when compared with other mammalian spermatozoa, its small size has hidden many of the details of its structure from the light microscopist. It was not until the invention of the electron microscope that a thorough study of spermatozoon structure could be accomplished.
