Arterial disease is virtually a universal entity in man. Some cultures, such as the African Bantus have very little in the way of vascular lesions, while in the United States and other industrialized nations atherosclerosis affects a large segment of the population. With this in mind it is not hard to understand why ischemia, or arteriosclerotic heart disease, is second only to cardiovascular diseases in general as the major cause of death in the United States (4, 42).

Previous research indicates that explicit surveillance should induce subjects to attribute their performance at a task to the surveillance; hence, such subjects should persist to a lesser extent than subjects not exposed to such surveillance. Two forms of explicit surveillance were utilized: human and camera, as well as the appropriate opposites (human non- and camera non-surveillance). Subjects were directed to perform a model construction task, then were unobtrusively observed during a post-task “waiting period.” No difference in persistence was found for type of surveillance utilized. Post-Discharge Adjustment Of Children Treated At Edgefield Lodge, Sandra M. Erickson

The purpose of this study was to assess the adjustment of 157 children discharged from Edgefield Lodge in an effort toward accountability to both clients served and the public.

Level of adjustment of the children was determined by checking the records of various community agencies including the Police, Sherriff, Youth Service Centers, Juvenile Court, Children’s Services Division, and the schools. Using the information gathered, the adjustment of each child was scored using the Community Adaptation Scale which was developed for that purpose. Theses adjustment scores were the main outcome variable in the study.

This investigation compared the auditory conceptualization ability (Lindamood and Lindamood, 1970) or vocal phonics (Van Riper, 1963) of third grade students with and without articulation deficits in an attempt to determine if a relationship exists between auditory conceptualization ability and articulation ability. The specific question posed was: Is there a statistically significant difference in auditory conceptualization ability between third grade children with various degrees of articulation deficits and third grade children without articulation deficits.

The purpose of this study was to compare language performance on three subtests of the Illinois Test of Psycholinguistic Abilities (ITPA) of a Black population of children ages three years six months through six years in Portland, Oregon, with the standardizing population of the ITPA. These subtests are Auditory Reception, Grammatic Closure, and Verbal Expression.

The purpose of this study was to determine the kind and degree of differences that existed in the socioeconomic status and access to financial resources of elderly members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and to determine if differences existed between Church Service and private pay elderly hospital patients in economic status, type of housing, housing costs, marital status, sex, number and degree of access to children, savings and other assets.

Although pins have been used since the 1800's for retention of dental restorations, their widespread use had been limited because supporting techniques such as impression, die materials, better handpieces and drills have only been perfected in the last two decades.

The pin technique allows for greater retention of restorative materials which otherwise might require considerable reduction of sound tooth substance; this is particularly paramount when insufficient coronal tooth structure is present. Also, the placing of pins in divergent directions gives excellent retention. Pin-retained castings reduce the need for deep cavity preparation in some cases.

This study was designed to objectively evaluate each pharmacological component of the Loma Linda intravenous sedation technique. The results were evaluated as a function of stress as measured by plasma cortisol levels.

The study was conducted on fifty patients in groups of ten. Blood samples were taken at set procedure intervals during dental extraction of third molar teeth. A component of the Loma Linda technique was deleted from each of the groups to ascertain its role in sedation and relief of stress.

Results show a trend toward reduction of plasma cortisol levels as the procedure progresses, indicating a measure of …

This thesis describes a comparative study of 82 vegetarian and 21 non-vegetarian Seventh-day Adventist females ages 25 to 65 to discover if there is a possible correlation between diet and weight. The subjects were chosen by random sampling in the specified target population and were personally interviewed by the use of a questionnaire.

The general linear hypothesis analysis shewed that present age and relative weight at age 25 were significant in terms of present relative weight; however, physical activity and socioeconomic stratum were not significant. Diet, defined as vegetarian or non-vegetarian, was only marginally significant.

Fasting blood was collected at weekly intervals and the level of 2,3-DPG of the red blood cell was determined in 15 male subjects age 28 to 57 with serum cholesterol levels greater than 250 mg%. A lactovegetarian diet containing no cholesterol, a high level of dietary fiber and a P/S ratio of 4.0 was provided for 28 days.

During the course of the experimental period the 2,3-DPG increased by an average of 0.83> «moles/ml red blood cell which was highly significant (p^.001). This significant increase of 2,3-DPG which relates to an increased oxygen delivery capability of the red blood cells …

Activated coagulation times (ACT's) of heparinized blood or plasma samples containing normal platelets were compared with ACT’s of heparinized samples containing non-viable or abnormally functional platelets. The non-viable platelets were prepared by freeze/thawing, and the abnormally functional platelets resulted from the addition of adenosine or adenosine 5'-diphosphate (ADP).

The ACT’s of the heparinized samples containing treated platelets were considerably longer than the ACT’s performed on samples with untreated platelets. Treated platelets had no effect on unheparinized samples, however. This would indicate that, although platelet factor 3 (PF3) is sufficient to promote clotting of unheparinized blood, viable platelets, in addition, are …
