Comparison Of The Behavioral Pharmacology Of Phencyclidine To Related Compounds, Kathleen T. Brady

Phencyclidine (PCP) belongs to a class of drugs with a unique and characteristic spectra of pharmacological activity. PCP has recently become a major drug of abuse. Structural analogues of PCP have also been reported in street use. The following experiments explore the behavioral pharmacology of PCP and several compounds with PCP-like activity.

In Experiment I the effects of PCP were compared to three structural analogues in rhesus monkeys trained to lever press on a fixed-interval 5 min schedule of food presentation. Dose-response curves and potency estimates were determined for PCP, N-ethyl-1-phenylcyclohexylamine (PCE), 1-(1-(2-thienyl) cyclohexyl) piperidine (TCP) and ketamine.The effects of …

This thesis was an attempt to investigate two important cognitive aspects of depression: expectation of success, and changes in this expectation. Recent studies in these areas have yielded inconsistent results. It has generally been concluded that subclinical depressives do not differ from nondepressives in initial expectation of success, though they do at times exhibit smaller changes in success expectancy following personal experiences of success or failure. Two main cognitive theories of depression have attempted to account for this difference between the two populations. Beck (1967) has proposed that depression results from specific negative cognitive processes, among them a denial of …

Viewing a seizure as a behavioral chain consisting of a precursor aura phase and a climactic phase has moved researchers to introduce behavioral techniques either singularly or in combination at aura to circumvent seizures. The purpose of this study was to determine if differences existed in the perceptions of re-entry nurses, nurse educators, and nurse administrators with regard to the needs of women who wish to become re-employed in the nursing field. Specific barriers to re-entry and perceived needs in terms of skills and knowledge were examined. Procedure. The sample for the study included inactive nurses, nurse educators and nurse administrators from 13 counties within California. In 1970 art article was published in the Journal of Antibiotics in which the isolation of a substance from the south African soil microorganism Streptomyces griseolutus designated 593A (NSC-135758) was reported. It was reported to inhibit the growth of human tumors in the chick embryo. Arison and Beck in 1973 proposed the structure to be 3,6-bis-(5-chloro-2 -piperidyl-)-2 ,5-piperizinedione based on spectral data.

In the ensuing years a number of further studies were made on the activity of 593A, It was found to be active against a number of solid tumors, several variants of leukemia, and in selectively inhibiting DNA synthesis. …

The polyamines are a group of natural compounds which have been found in almost all living tissues. N¹- and N⁸- acetylspermidine have been known for a considerable time as normal constituents in human urine, but their physiological role is unknown. Recent studies have indicated the presence of enzymes in the tissues capable of converting spermidine into N¹-acetylspermidine and N⁸-acetylspermidine and other enzyme activities which catalyze deacetylation and interconversion reactions.

Cryogenine's immunosuppressive activity was first evaluated by Kosersky, et al. (21) who, impressed by the drug's ability to inhibit both the irritant- and immune- mediated phases of adjuvant-induced polyarthritis (11), quantitatively confirmed this activity and clearly differentiated the action of cryogenine from that displayed by 6-mercaptopurine. A definitive study by Watson and Malone (22) confirmed cryogenine's lack of immunosuppressive capacity at effective anti-inflammatory dose levels.

In the present study, propylene glycol monostearate (PGM), ethoxylated stearyl alcohol (ESA) and combination thereof have been investigated for their film-forming potential. The wettability, strength, and integrity of the films were evaluated by measuring the contact angles and modulus of elasticity. The films of mixed composition had smaller contact angles than the films of either component. The modulus of elasticity of all films tested was in the range of 0.19 - 0.40 Kg/cm². Treatment Of Severe Self-Injurious Behavior Among The Institutionalized Retarded Using A Combination Of Overcorrection, Contingent Restraint, And Increased Interaction, Robin S. Ross

Three severely developmentally delayed institutionalized adolescent individuals were treated for severe self-injurious behavior over a three month period. Treatment consisted of positive practice overcorrection, restraint delivered as a reinforcer for an absence of self-injury, and increased interaction during task training sessions. Treatment was faded for two of the individuals in successive steps involving decreased restraint and interaction. Self-injurious behavior was reduced in all cases. Prosocial behaviors increased with reductions in self-injurious behavior.

The Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT) is a widely used receptive vocabulary screening tool, but it is not without its limitations, such as inadvisable I.Q. usage and a standardization procedure that lacks scope. A revision of the PPVT, known as the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test-Revised (PPVT-R) was published in 1981, and contains a more complete standardization procedure as well as some structural changes of the test itself (Dunn, 1981). Speech/language pathology, whose diagnosticians most commonly use the age equivalent value, is a profession that would gain from information which deals with the equivalency of the PPVT-R to the original PPVT. …
