Health Risk Appraisal And Health Promotion Behavior In Young Adults, Diane L. Hanna

Health Risk Appriaisal (HRA) is gaining widespread popularity as a health promotion strategy. Yet there are limited studies to date to assess the impact of HRA on health behavior, particularly among young populations. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effectiveness of individual HRA results as a stimulus for young adults to pursue health promoting behavior. It was hypothesized that young adults exposed to the results of their personal HRA would demonstrate a significantly higher health habits change score than would young adults given the HRA, but not exposed to its results.

Ten members of the Eastern Illinois University women's track team were used as subjects to determine the relationship of body weight, blood pressure and heart rate during rest, exercise and recovery to menstruation.

The subjects were tested on two different occasions. The first test was administered within twenty-four hours of the onset of menstruation. The second test was conducted seven days later. During both testing periods blood pressure, body weight and resting heart rate measurements were taken before beginning the treadmill protocol (progressive grade and speed increases up to 4% and 8 mph, respectively). This investigation was concerned with the generalization which occurred from trained to untrained phonemes in which the process of stopping was operating. Two male subjects aged 5-3 and 4-0, who used the process of stopping, were chosen for this study on the basis of an examination of their articulation errors and the results of ten 15- word deep tests. A 48-item probe test, to assess the frequency of stopping for selected phonemes, was administered three times to establish baseline. The problem of spontaneity in a Jungian art therapy group is addressed in terms of the integration of intuitive/ unconscious processes with the more cognitive aspects of art therapy. An explanation of basic Jungian theory is given, focusing on the process of active imagination, which forms the theoretical framework of the study. Conclusions are based on phenomenological data in conjunction with the writer's cognitive and subjective experiences while running the group.

A community health center opened a well baby clinic in January 1981. The pediatric clinic service was offered to mothers who had delivered a baby through the health center's obstetric clinic. The basic goal of this study is to identify barriers to pediatric clinic attendance. The researcher has attempted to provide a profile of the users of the pediatric clinic. Following this, an evaluation of the pediatric clinic's geographic and financial accessibility, as perceived by the users, was done one year after starting the pediatric service. The hospital records of all outpatient infants 92 days of age or less with rectal temperature ≥ 100° F and/or chief complaint of fever who presented to Boston City Hospital's Pediatric Walk-In Clinic (PWIC) in the year 1981 were reviewed. There were 187 total study visits. The rectal temperature (T) in the PWIC was ≥ 100°F in 132 visits; half of these visits (66) were for T ≥ 101°F. The number of patients presenting with T ≥ 101°F increased with each month of age. The majority of study visits (56.1%) were for mild, self-limited illnesses; 14.4% of all visits were …

The Effect Of Cardiac Rehabilitation On Blood Lipids, Carol Lynn Bartholomew

The effect of cardiac rehabilitation on blood lipids was studied in a sample of seventeen male participants of the Greenville Hospital Center cardiac rehabilitation program. These subjects all suffered myocardial infarctions, but none had surgery to by-pass the obstructed coronary circulation. Paired values were obtained for triglyceride, serum cholesterol and HDL cholesterol before, and after the exercise program. The time span between the before-exercise and after-exercise values ranged from five to thirty-one weeks. The differences in the paired values were analyzed by the t-test. No significant decrease occurred in triglyceride or serum cholesterol. A significant increase occurred in HDL cholesterol.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of Fluori-Methane vapocoolant spray, as used in the spray and stretch technique, on decreasing a prolonged silent period duration in the masseter muscle. Ten subjects were selected, all of whom were identified as having masseter muscle dysfunction and/or spasm. The population consisted of two males and eight females, whose ages ranged from 24-58. The silent period duration of the masseter was measured following elicitation of the jaw-jerk reflex. Five readings were taken and the mean silent period duration was calculated. A total of 18 obese men and women volunteered and participated in a seven-day protein sparing modified fast providing 400 calories per day. The subjects were concurrently participating in an eight-week weight control program combining the facets of nutrition education, group therapy, and values clarification. The modified fast, which was optional, was conducted during two different time periods with a conventional low calorie diet prescribed during the four-week interval.

The possibility that quadriceps strength is a limiting factor when performing maximal oxygen consumption tests on a bicycle ergometer has been introduced in previous studies. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the relationship between quadriceps strength at varying speeds of muscle contraction and aerobic capacity measured at high and low pedaling frequencies on a bicycle ergometer. Subjects were nineteen college-age males, nine of whom were competitive cyclists and ten of whom were untrained cyclists. Continuing the study of the relationships between fibrin investment of the tumor, vascularity, and tumor growth, we decided to investigate the relationship of warfarin sodium anticoagulation with tumor growth and vascularization. It was reasoned that if the previously observed altered tumor growth was due the heparin’s anticoagulant effect rather than a direct effect upon the tumor, another anticoagulant with a different mechanism of action would have the same tumor growth reducing capabilities. Warfarin sodium produces reduced fibrin polymer formation by a mechanism entirely different from that of heparin. A multiple baseline study was conducted across five hysterectomy patients between the ages of 30-36. Three patients received a treatment intervention consisting of general and sensory information, muscle relaxation, a cognitive coping technique, and a pre-anesthetic interview. Two yoked, placebo control patients watched a 20-min video· tape about surgery, practiced recovery exercises, and made up stories from TAT cards. Self-report measures taken were the Hospital Stress Rating Scale, a recovery inventory, and postsurgical pain ratings. An experiment was conducted to investigate three different treatment strategies in the rehabilitation of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) patients. Fifteen CABG patients were randomly assigned to one of three training groups: an outpatient cardiac rehabilitation exercise group (which met three times per week for three months); a second group which participated in weekly stress management training for seven weeks in addition to the cardiac rehabilitation exercise sessions; and a third group which participated in a weekly discussion on social support in addition to the exercise sessions.
