An Investigation Of Psychological Disorders In Hearing Impaired Populations, Sandra A. Keiser Apr 1985

An Investigation Of Psychological Disorders In Hearing Impaired Populations, Sandra A. Keiser

Undergraduate University Honors Capstones

Research into deaf persons' personal and intrafamily patterns began in the 1950s. This research, however, focused on the "problems of the deaf" rather than looking deeper. This has caused a focus in the literature on problems rather than looking into similarities between deaf and hearing people, there would have been different results. This thesis looks to answer several questions: What are the factors tobe considered when doing research on deaf populations? Are there differences in children's social and emotional development between the two populations? Do deaf children exhibit emotional or behavioral disorders different in type or frequency than comparable hearing …

The Effects Of Religious Affiliation And Attendance On Illicit Sexual Behavior And Substance Abuse, Thomas W. Zane Apr 1985

The Effects Of Religious Affiliation And Attendance On Illicit Sexual Behavior And Substance Abuse, Thomas W. Zane

Theses and Dissertations

A sample of 7724 college students in Washington and Utah was selected to study the relationships of religious activity and religious affiliation to illicit sexual behaviors, use of marijuana, and getting drunk. For all religious affiliations (except for the Jews), there were significant correlations between church activity and the measured illicit behaviors. LDS rates of behavior were significantly lower at <.001 for the five illicit behaviors. Two factor analyses were calculated to determine which sexual behaviors would load on a single factor and which substances would load on another factor. Extramarital coitus, heavy petting, and passionate kissing formed the first "sexual" factor. The use of beer, liquor, and marijuana combined with the behavior getting drunk to form the "substance-abuse" factor. A canonical analysis reported a moderate relationship with a canonical coefficient of .534 between the two factors. A discriminant analysis based on each subjects' religious affiliation and activity level yielded a 70-80 percent correct classification percentage.

A Comparative Study Of Alcoholic And Nonalcoholic Women's Perception Of Their Relationship With Their Father, Judith A. Hinga Apr 1985

A Comparative Study Of Alcoholic And Nonalcoholic Women's Perception Of Their Relationship With Their Father, Judith A. Hinga

Dissertations

The literature review outlined the historical perspectives impacting current thinking about the role fathers play in child development. Theories of child development saw the mother as the important parent and all but ignored the father. Later researchers studied the father-daughter relationship and found that the paternal relationship is also an important factor in a female's personality development.

Theories of female alcoholism reviewed in this study indicate that there is a relationship between sex-role conflict and female alcoholism. Existing data show that the family of origin of female alcoholics is characterized by a cold, rejecting mother and a warm, accepting father. …

The Use Of Guided Imagery And Progressive Relaxation In Treating Hemodialysis Patients For Dietary Compliance, James B. Morrissey Apr 1985

The Use Of Guided Imagery And Progressive Relaxation In Treating Hemodialysis Patients For Dietary Compliance, James B. Morrissey

Dissertations

Studies have confirmed that many hemodialysis patients experience numerous psychological difficulties as a result of their physical illness. One behavioral manifestation of these psychological states is noncompliance to imposed dietary restrictions. In spite of life threatening implications, many hemodialysis patients find it very difficult to maintain dietary compliance.

Recently, guided imagery and progressive relaxation have been used as methods to assist clients to overcome negative psychological states. In most cases, the treatments are adjunctive to on-going counseling or psychotherapy. The purpose of this investigation was to test the idea that guided imagery and progressive relaxation alone can be successfully used …

Protein Concentration Elevations In Mouse Lungs Following Sudden Transient Cephalad (+Gz) Acceleration, Charles J. Gutierrez Jan 1985

Protein Concentration Elevations In Mouse Lungs Following Sudden Transient Cephalad (+Gz) Acceleration, Charles J. Gutierrez

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Laboratory and feral lineages of mice were subjected to cephalad (+GZ) accelerations, for 1.8 seconds, aboard a solid fuel rocket. Spectrophotometric analysis of bronchoalveolar lavage retrieved post launch revealed significant (p < .001) elevations of protein in the lungs of experimental mice. Sudden transient imposition of a mean +GZ acceleration of 6.22 ± .47 (SD) G, at lift-off, may have induced hypervolemia of basilar pulmonary microvasculature with concomitant migration of fluid and protein from intravascular to juxta-alveolar perivascular compartments. Exudates may have entered bronchiolar airways subsequently gravitating toward alveoli.

Qualitative And Quantitative Morphology Of Lateral Rectus Motoneurons Of The Principal Abducens Nucleus, Helen Russell-Mergenthal Jan 1985

Qualitative And Quantitative Morphology Of Lateral Rectus Motoneurons Of The Principal Abducens Nucleus, Helen Russell-Mergenthal

Theses and Dissertations

Nine lateral rectus motoneurons of the principal abducens nucleus, intracellularly stained with HRP, were morphometrically analyzed by light microscopy using a new method for determining motoneuron size. Particular emphasis was placed on devising a method of estimating total dendrite size from the proximal dendritic diameter alone.

The dendrites of these cells were divided into three types. One type, the microdendrites, had a consistent diameter of l micrometer, variable but short lengths, and added very little to the overall cell size. The majority of the dendrites on these cells (83) were standard in appearance but they could be separated into two …

The Role Of The Insulin Receptor In Skeletal Muscle Insulin Resistance: Evaluation Of Two Animal Models, Charles F. Burant

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

The role of the insulin receptor in muscle insulin resistance was studied. Denervation of skeletal muscle resulted in the rapid appearance of a decrease in basal and insulin stimulated glucose transport, glycogen synthesis and a defect in the activation of glycogen synthase which was independent of levels of glycogen in the muscle. The effect was seen in both predominantly red and predominantly white muscle. There was no change in the denervated muscles' sensitivity to epinephrine-mediated decrease in glycogen synthesis or glycogen content, nor was there a major change in the insulin binding capacity of denervated muscles. A technique was developed …
