Purification And Characterization Of Two Oxidoreductases Involved In Bile Acid Modification By The Intestinal Anaerobe Eubacterium Sp. Vpi 12708, Clifton Franklund Jan 1990

Purification And Characterization Of Two Oxidoreductases Involved In Bile Acid Modification By The Intestinal Anaerobe Eubacterium Sp. Vpi 12708, Clifton Franklund

Theses and Dissertations

Two enzymes, a 7α-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (7α-HSDH) and an NADH-dependent flavin oxidoreductase (NADH:FOR), have been purified to apparent electrophoretic homogeneity from the intestinal anaerobe Eubacterium sp. VPI 12708. Using a protocol consisting of four chromatographic separations, the 7α-HSDH was purified by a factor of over 1200-fold with more than a 30% final recovery. Subunit molecular mass was estimated to be 32 Kdal by SDS-PAGE, while native molecular mass estimates from gel filtration were 124 Kdal. The purified 7α-HSDH was able to utilize a variety of bile acids containing an unhindered 7α-hydroxy moiety as substrates, existing either as free acids or glycine …

Adolescent Pregnancy And Loneliness, Estelle M. Brodeur Jan 1990

Adolescent Pregnancy And Loneliness, Estelle M. Brodeur

Theses and Dissertations

This descriptive study explored loneliness among pregnant adolescents in a southeastern metropolitan area. Numerous psychosocial variables of the special population of pregnant teens remain to be studied. One such variable is loneliness, a feeling often experienced by adolescents. The present study hypothesized that loneliness may occur during adolescent pregnancy. To date, one study exists (Diiorio & Riley, 1988) of loneliness and adolescent pregnancy.

The problem statement was: Does loneliness exist among pregnant adolescents? Three research questions were addressed:

Within this sample:

1. To what extent does loneliness exist?

2. Is loneliness more frequent during certain ages?

3. Do pregnant black …

Nurses' Attitudes Toward Patients With Aids Examined By Hours Of Aids Education, Teresa Grove Jan 1990

Nurses' Attitudes Toward Patients With Aids Examined By Hours Of Aids Education, Teresa Grove

Dissertations and Theses

This study was designed to describe the attitudes of staff nurses toward patients who have Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), and to determine if the 1989 Washington State licensing requirement for seven hours of AIDS education was effective in changing the attitudes of these nurses toward AIDS patients. Health care providers' attitudes toward patients with AIDS have been documented as differing from their attitudes toward patients with other debilitating conditions (cancer, diabetes, heart disease) in that they place more blame for getting the disease on those with AIDS, they tend to have some degree of homophobia, and they are sometimes overly …

Patterns Of Psychological Adaptation In Death And Dying: A Causal Model And Exploratory Study, Marjorie C. Dobratz Dnsc, Msn, Rn Jan 1990

Patterns Of Psychological Adaptation In Death And Dying: A Causal Model And Exploratory Study, Marjorie C. Dobratz Dnsc, Msn, Rn

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the interrelationships of the person-environment variables of age, sex, length of illness, pain, social support, and physical function as they affected psychological adaptation in dying. An adaptation paradigm of constructs from nursing, illness, and dying provided the theoretical framework which was used to formulate and test a causal model. This study, in addition, had a qualitative component that identified, from the participants' spontaneous responses, reactions to and perceptions of the dying process. A sample of 97 adults was recruited from two metropolitan home hospice programs, with testing occurring in the home. Regression …

Personal And Organizational Variables Related To The Strength Of Mentoring Relationships In Nursing, Willa Fields Dnsc Jan 1990

Personal And Organizational Variables Related To The Strength Of Mentoring Relationships In Nursing, Willa Fields Dnsc

Dissertations

Mentoring is viewed as a viable developmental process for nurses that promotes professional maturation, career satisfaction, and strong, competent leaders. Personal and organizational variables related to mentoring, such as mentoring potential, professional success, immediate organizational climate, general organizational climate, and experience as a mentee, have been described in the theoretical and research literature. A conceptual model for this investigation was developed which related these variables to the mentors' perceptions of the strength of their strongest mentoring relationship. The purpose of this study was to establish the strength of the relationships delineated in the model. The model was tested on 125 …

Impact Of Stress And Coping On Adherence And Health Status In Patients With Hypertension, Diane Darby Goldberger Dnsc, Mn, Rn Jan 1990

Impact Of Stress And Coping On Adherence And Health Status In Patients With Hypertension, Diane Darby Goldberger Dnsc, Mn, Rn

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to describe and explain the impact of demographic variables (age, educational level, time since diagnosis) and subsequent psychosocial variables (perceived stress, ways of coping, professional support, and social support) on adherence and, ultimately, on health status (blood pressure, psychological symptoms, and subjective health) in patients with essential hypertension whose health care was managed by a nurse. Because nurses manage the therapeutic regimens of these patients, it is necessary to identify those factors that influence adherence and thus the health of hypertensive individuals. The transactional framework of stress, appraisal, and coping of Lazarus and Folkman …

Subjects (N = 188) were female Registered Nurses from six hospitals in Southern California. The majority of the respondents were clinical nurses who worked full time on the day shift, although a significant percentage of the sample also worked part-time or perdiem and …

The Use Of Phonological Process Assessment For Differentiating Developmental Apraxia Of Speech From Functional Articulation Disorders, Kathryn Dearmond Jan 1990

The Use Of Phonological Process Assessment For Differentiating Developmental Apraxia Of Speech From Functional Articulation Disorders, Kathryn Dearmond

Dissertations and Theses

Focus has turned from emphasis on phonetic sound errors to phonologic rule systems in the study of articulation disorders. The current theory proposes that the phonological disorders which children experience are controlled by higher levels in the brain than those that control the motor functioning of the brain. The purpose of the present study was to compare the use of phonological processes by a group of school-age children with moderate to severe multiple articulation disorders (MAD) with developmental apraxia of speech (DAS) to the phonological processes used by those without developmental apraxia of speech. For the purposes of this study, …

Audiological In-Service Regarding Hearing Impairment And Its Impact On Communication In The Geriatric Population, Marie Barlow Lassell Jan 1990

Audiological In-Service Regarding Hearing Impairment And Its Impact On Communication In The Geriatric Population, Marie Barlow Lassell

Dissertations and Theses

At least two studies have been found conducted in the area of audiological in-services and their impact on the people to whom they were presented. In 1981, Dancer and Keiser studied the effects of empathy training on geriatric-care nurses and in 1985, Dampier, Dancer, and Keiser studied changing attitudes of college students toward older persons with hearing loss. Both of the studies investigated the effect of in-service training on empathy, rather than using the traditional academicallyoriented in-service program approach. Both studies found statistical results indicating a significant positive change in the subjects' feelings toward hearing impaired geriatrics. Additionally, Dancer et …
