Comparison Of The Efficacy Of Heparinized And Non-Heparinized Normal Saline Solutions In Maintaining Patency Of Arterial Catheters, Juanita K. Bogart Jan 1992

Comparison Of The Efficacy Of Heparinized And Non-Heparinized Normal Saline Solutions In Maintaining Patency Of Arterial Catheters, Juanita K. Bogart

Masters Theses

Although the need for heparin in flush solutions has not been established, the currently accepted standard of practice is to use heparinized solutions in arterial catheter flush devices. Exposure to heparin may place patients at risk for developing heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HITP) and subsequent embolic events. The purpose of the study was to test the null hypothesis that there is no significant difference in patency of arterial catheters maintained with heparinized or non-heparinized normal saline solutions. An experimental design using a convenience sample (N = 31) and random assignment into experimental and control groups was used. There was no statistically significant …

The Relationship Between Attributions And Adjustment Following Myocardial Infarction, Margaret Elizabeth Bowles Jan 1992

The Relationship Between Attributions And Adjustment Following Myocardial Infarction, Margaret Elizabeth Bowles

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to identify if spontaneous attributional search was part of the reaction to a myocardial infarction (MI) and if there were relationships among attributional search, perception of control over attributions, gender and adjustment following MI. Attribution theory provided the framework for this study. A descriptive correlational design was utilized. The convenience sample included twenty male and twenty female subjects hospitalized with a MI. The Multiple Affect Adjective Check List and an attribution questionnaire constructed specifically for this study were administered prior to discharge from the hospital. It was hypothesized that of those subjects that have …

Factors Affecting Psychosocial Adjustment Of Individuals Following Ostomy Surgery, Margot Knapp Jan 1992

Factors Affecting Psychosocial Adjustment Of Individuals Following Ostomy Surgery, Margot Knapp

Masters Theses

The literature has documented the traumatic effect of ostomy surgery. Individuals who need to integrate a new body image must go through a period of psychosocial adjustment. Several studies have been done to analyze components of adjustment and to ascertain variables which might affect adjustment. Psychosocial adjustment to ostomy surgery is a new field of study and previous research has been limited in scope.

The current study sought primarily to identify both demographic and categorical variables predictive of a broad range of adjustment factors, and by using a comprehensive sample. Independent variables included age, level of education, precipitating illness, type …

The Effects Of Knowledge Of Accrued Clinical Clock Hours On Supervisors' Evaluations Of Clinical Competence, Julie Ann Johnston-Palmer Jan 1992

The Effects Of Knowledge Of Accrued Clinical Clock Hours On Supervisors' Evaluations Of Clinical Competence, Julie Ann Johnston-Palmer

Masters Theses

Supervision in speech-language pathology is one facet of the field in which all speech-language pathologists have had to engage. The more that is known about the process of supervision the better future speech-language pathologists can be prepared to interact in a professional setting. Many variables are present in supervision related to the field of speech-language pathology. One variable which has received only minimal attention relates to the effect knowledge about a student clinician's number of accrued clinical clock hours has on the evaluation of the clinician's skills. The assumption is often made that a student clinician with more clinical clock …

The Effect Of Genetic And Environmental Stress Factors On Alcohol Consumption In Rats, Sharon E. Pryor Jan 1992

The Effect Of Genetic And Environmental Stress Factors On Alcohol Consumption In Rats, Sharon E. Pryor

Masters Theses

The etiology of alcoholism continues to be investigated. Heredity and environment have both been implicated as causes; however, the reason some people drink more than others has not been determined by science. Twin and adoption studies in humans yield evidence for genetic factors in alcoholism. Studies of possible markers in humans and studies of laboratory animal models have produced further evidence for the genetic transmission of alcohol preference. This animal study was done to further investigate the effects of heredity and environment on preference for alcohol in laboratory rats. Two genetic strains of rats, Wistar and Fischer-344, (n=39) were given …

Regulation Of Phosphatidylinositol 4-Kinase Activity In Rat Pancreatic Acini, Bruce R. Conway Jan 1992

Regulation Of Phosphatidylinositol 4-Kinase Activity In Rat Pancreatic Acini, Bruce R. Conway

Theses and Dissertations

The present report describes the characteristics and regulatory properties of phosphatidylinositol (Ptdlns) 4-kinase activity in rat exocrine pancreas. The membrane associated Ptdlns 4-kinase displayed a broad pH profile with optimal activity at neutral to alkaline pH. Carbachol (CCh) elicits a concentration- and time-dependent increase in Ptdlns 4-kinase activity in homogenates derived from agonist-stimulated acini. This effect was blocked by N-methylscopolamine and mimicked by muscarine. The enzyme had an apparent Km for Ptdlns and ATP of 4 and 60 uM, respectively. CCh caused no discernible change in the Km for either Ptdlns or ATP, but did produce a modest increase in …

Effects Of Adventist Engaged Encounter On Role Expectations And Growth In Premarital Relations, Jeffrey O. Brown Jan 1992

Effects Of Adventist Engaged Encounter On Role Expectations And Growth In Premarital Relations, Jeffrey O. Brown

Dissertations

Problem. There is a growing concern in present society over what have come to be known as 'family values.' At the heart of these values lies marriage, and the erosion of this ancient institution has caused practitioners and researchers alike to focus on possible opportunities afforded by premarital intervention. With the proliferation of enrichment programs, there is a need in the church for an evaluation of Adventist Engaged Encounter (AEE), the largest group premarital intervention program in the Seventh-day Adventist denomination, especially as it relates to two of its primary foci: role expectations and growth.

Method. Demographic details were obtained …

The Effect Of Life Stress On The Athletic Injuries Of Intercollegiate Wrestlers, Hari T. Paizis Jan 1992

The Effect Of Life Stress On The Athletic Injuries Of Intercollegiate Wrestlers, Hari T. Paizis

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Researchers have been interested in the effect of life stress on athletic injuries for quite some time. Most researchers have shown a definite influence of life stress on injuries in team contact sports. On the other hand investigations dealing with non-contact team or individual sports have reported conflicting results. No research, however, has been done on individual contact sports in relation to the effect of life stress on athletic injury. The present investigation examined the effect of life stress on athletic injuries in two Division I wrestling teams during their respective seasons. The Social Athletic Readjustment Rating Scale (SARRS) was …

Influence Of Physical Fitness Level On Susceptibility To Tts As Measured By Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions, Lisa Renee Battani Jan 1992

Influence Of Physical Fitness Level On Susceptibility To Tts As Measured By Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions, Lisa Renee Battani

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Recent research suggests that physical fitness level may influence hearing sensitivity to noise (Ismail et al., 1973; Manson, Alessio, Huchinson, & Cristell, 1992). Frequency-specific changes in hearing acuity resulting from noise overexposure have been detected in human subjects using distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE) (Whitehead, Lonsbury-Martin, & Martin, 1992). A decrease in DPOAE amplitude was reported at frequencies at which behavioral thresholds were reduced following a noise exposure (Harris, 1990; Lonsbury-Martin & Martin, 1990; Martin, Probst, & Lonsbury-Martin, 1990). The purposes of this study were to: 1. Examine the relationship between physical fitness level and susceptibility to a temporary noise-induced …

Concerns/Problems Experienced After Discharge From An Acute Care Setting: The Patient's Perspective, Karen R. Peper

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine the discharge planning process in terms of concerns that patients experience after discharge from an acute care setting. Betty Neuman's Health Care Systems Model was the conceptual framework. Aspects of secondary prevention were used to classify the concerns as either a lack of resources or a reaction to a stressor.; The sample (n = 146) consisted of medical and surgical patients, 18 years or older hospitalized at a community hospital for at least 24 hours.; Data were analyzed descriptively. Data revealed that patients do experience some concerns after discharge. The top four …

Oculomotor Deficits In Diseases Of The Basal Ganglia: Parkinson's And Huntington's Diseases, Todd B. Baird Jan 1992

Oculomotor Deficits In Diseases Of The Basal Ganglia: Parkinson's And Huntington's Diseases, Todd B. Baird

Theses and Dissertations

Oculomotor deficits are now recognized as being present in several neurological diseases of the basal ganglia. The present report will focus primarily on those observed in Huntington's and Parkinson's diseases. Neuronal cell loss in the pars compacta of the substantia nigra, degeneration of the nigrostriatal pathway, and consequent depletion of the neurotransmitter dopamine is the most obvious etiological abnormality in Parkinson's disease. Huntington's disease, on the other hand, involves the selective genetically-driven atrophy of the striatum (caudate and putamen). In order to attempt to understand oculomotor dysfunction, as a component of basal ganglia disease, it is necessary to first establish …
