Sequence Specificity Of Teniposide-Induced Deletion And Insertion Mutations At The Aprt Locus Of Chinese Hamster Cells, Yi-Hong Han
Theses and Dissertations
Previous studies suggested that teniposide is a strong clastogen, and that the DNA breakage effect of this drug is mediated by the nuclear enzyme topoisomerase II. Ripley et al found evidence for a correspondence between sites of acridine-induced frameshift mutations in bacteriophage T4 and sites of in Vitro DNA cleavage by T4 topoisomerase II. To identify the sequence specificity of teniposide-induced deletion and insertion mutations in mammalian cells, the CHO-D422 cell line, which is hemizygous at the aprt locus, was employed in this study. Sixty-eight teniposide-induced and 42 spontaneous aprt mutants were analyzed at the DNA sequence level. Compared with …
The Effect Of Body Position Changes On Arterial Oxygen Saturation In Obesity As Measured Noninvasively By Pulse Oximetry, Anna Marie Angela Klosterman
The Effect Of Body Position Changes On Arterial Oxygen Saturation In Obesity As Measured Noninvasively By Pulse Oximetry, Anna Marie Angela Klosterman
Theses and Dissertations
This study utilized a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design that compared the effect of body position changes on arterial oxygen saturation in obesity as measured noninvasively by pulse oximetry. The null hypothesis, that there would be no difference between oxygen saturation values measured by pulse oximetry with position change from sitting to supine in obese subjects as compared to nonobese subjects, was tested. Fourteen obese, American Society of Anesthesiologist (ASA) physical class status II subjects and 14 nonobese ASA physical class status I subjects were included in the sample population. Thirteen of the obese subjects were further classified as morbidly obese. After …

Caregivers, Employers And Eldercare Issues, Donna L. Petro
Caregivers, Employers And Eldercare Issues, Donna L. Petro
Theses
Caregiving roles already impact the American workforce and will continue to affect productivity and personal lives of workers at an ever increasing rate. Demographics bear out that midlife females, the traditional caregivers, are returning to the workforce in increasing numbers each year. As our society ages, the fastest growing segment of the population, the "old-old," will require a wider spectrum of services from both agencies and family members. Many adults already find themselves "sandwiched" between the needs of children and the demands of elderly relatives, a situation that will become more common before the year 2000.
In the early 1980s, …

The Effects Of Prenatal Care On Infant Mortality In The United States, Barbara A. Dieterich
The Effects Of Prenatal Care On Infant Mortality In The United States, Barbara A. Dieterich
Theses
This thesis will focus on the causes of infant mortality in the United States. The lack of adequate prenatal care will be specifically addressed.
Research has attributed the majority of preventable infant deaths to socio-economic factors as opposed to the lack of technology. Since the percentage of the United States GNP spent on medical care continues to rise without subsequent decreases in infant deaths, it becomes necessary to focus on causal relationship.
Since a nation's infant mortality rate has long been viewed as an indicator of the country's effectiveness in meeting health needs, many areas must be targeted. The importance …

Alzheimer's Disease is a progressive, irreversible disease of the brain. It is not a normal or inevitable result of the aging process. However, as more people live to advanced age, the susceptible population will increase, as will the number of people afflicted with this disease. Alzheimer's Disease presents a challenge by taking away the patient's ability to remember, as well as the ability to learn.
Alzheimer's Disease has been characterized by many professionals as "the thief of minds" (Gewertz 23). Memories of life experiences and even one's own family members fade away leaving the person a stranger to those who …

Word Retrieval Behaviors Of Aphasic Adults In Conversational Speech : A Preliminary Study, Priscilla Jane Blake
Word Retrieval Behaviors Of Aphasic Adults In Conversational Speech : A Preliminary Study, Priscilla Jane Blake
Dissertations and Theses
Word retrieval difficulties are experienced by almost all aphasic adults. Consequently, these problems receive a substantial amount of attention in aphasia treatment. Because of the methodological difficulties, few studies have examined WRBs in conversational speech, focusing instead on confrontational naming tasks in which the client is asked to retrieve a specific word. These studies have left unanswered questions about the WRB processes.
The purposes of this study were to: (1) develop profiles of WRB for moderately impaired aphasic adult clients and examine these profiles for evidence that reflects the level of breakdown in the word retrieval process, and (2) determine …
