Affective Reactions, Social Support And Willingness To Self-Disclose To Hiv Seropositive Individuals: Impact Of Sexual Orientation And Responsibility For The Infection, Susan Paige Sherburne Oct 1995

Affective Reactions, Social Support And Willingness To Self-Disclose To Hiv Seropositive Individuals: Impact Of Sexual Orientation And Responsibility For The Infection, Susan Paige Sherburne

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

An attributional model of controllability suggests that perceptions of someone's controllability of an event lead to anger and rejection, whereas perceptions of uncontrollability lead to pity and helping. This study examined the impact of an HIV victim's sexual orientation and "responsibility" for infection on subjects' affective responses, self-disclosure to the person, social support, and liking and trust for the person. Subjects received messages from their "partner" (a confederate) stating that he had just learned he was HIV positive. The message either stated that he was heterosexual or homosexual, and that he had either only one partner or many partners. Subjects …

Mmpi And Rorschach Findings Of Individuals Approved For Gender Reassignment Surgery, Gregory Ralph Caron Oct 1995

Mmpi And Rorschach Findings Of Individuals Approved For Gender Reassignment Surgery, Gregory Ralph Caron

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Both clinical experience and empirical data from psychological tests present a picture of extreme clinical variation among those individuals who request gender reassignment surgery. Results of past empirical studies utilizing the MMPI and the Rorschach Test have tended to be equivocal regarding the level and nature of psychopathology associated with samples of gender dysphorics. These past studies are considered limited particularly in terms of methodological problems related to statistical power. This present study examined the nature and degree of psychopathology in a sample of candidates approved for gender reassignment surgery as reflected on their MMPI-2 clinical scale values and scores …

An Immediate Implant Stability And Pull-Out Study Comparing Two Different Surgical Techniques : Conventional Drilling Versus Trabecular Compaction : A Pilot Study, Yong Chang Choi

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Poor bone quality at an implant site and the lack of initial implant immobilization are considered the two main factors for first stage implant failure. Modalities are needed to improve the initial stability of implants in poor bone quality situations. The purpose of this study was to compare the immediate implant stability and the pull-out force of implants placed in fresh frozen human alveolar jaw bones by two different surgical techniques: 1) a conventional drilling technique and 2) a trabecular compaction technique. The initial lateral stability (assessed by Periotest values, PTVs), the uniaxial pull-out force (measured by Instron machine) and …

The Affects Of Vocal Fatigue On Fundamental Frequency And Frequency Range In Actresses As Opposed To Non-Actresses, Ruth Ann Jenkins Aug 1995

The Affects Of Vocal Fatigue On Fundamental Frequency And Frequency Range In Actresses As Opposed To Non-Actresses, Ruth Ann Jenkins

Dissertations and Theses

Differences may exist between the voice qualities of those who professionally use and train their voices and those who do not. The examination of fundamental frequency and frequency range m actresses and non-actresses is integral to determining voice quality differences in these populations. These differences, whether the result of frequent use or training of the voice, may exist relative to fatiguing conditions such as may be experienced by actresses in the course of their work. Fatigue has been shown to produce greater effects in normals than in performers, particularly in singers (Gelfer, Andrews, and Schmidt, 1991). Little research has been …

The Health Belief Model As A Predictor Of Gynecological Exams: Does Sexual Orientation Matter?, Lynn Elizabeth Kunkel Aug 1995

The Health Belief Model As A Predictor Of Gynecological Exams: Does Sexual Orientation Matter?, Lynn Elizabeth Kunkel

Dissertations and Theses

Screening and early detection are essential for the management and control of most diseases. It is important for women to practice routine health care that includes both clinical and self examinations. Today, many women go without health care due to barriers which prevent them from obtaining adequate care. The present study was designed to investigate, using the Health Belief Model, whether there is a difference between heterosexual and lesbian women in obtaining gynecological exams. Responses from 238 participants, 70 heterosexuals and 168 lesbians, indicated that the Health Belief Model was a significant predictor of whether women complied with recommended guidelines …

Little is known about factors that promote or inhibit the practice of breast cancer screening in this population. The purpose of this study was to determine what facilitators and barriers exist to the practice of breast cancer screening in black women. The theoretical frameworks for this study were Leininger's Transcultural Nursing Theory and Champion's Modified Health Belief Model. Utilizing a descriptive research design, a sample of 67 black women with no history of breast cancer …

Brief Therapy: Theory And Practice, Maurice W. Carroll Aug 1995

Brief Therapy: Theory And Practice, Maurice W. Carroll

Graduate Theses

The psychotherapeutic environment is changing. Pressure from outside the profession is motivating changes that are resulting in cost cutting and cost containment. Health management organizations and preferred provider organizations are beginning to control third party payment to mental health providers. This is counselling the profession to reevaluate and remodel how it performs therapy as numbers of sessions become more limited. Therapy is changing from a long lasting relationship with a therapist, in which personality transformation is sought for the client, to forms of brief therapy in which only problems and solutions, arising from the immediate issues, are focused on. This …

A Comparison Of Children's Knowledge Levels About Cardiovascular Fitness And Nutrition Before And After A Teaching Module, Susanne Isbell

MSN Research Projects

Many diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, are often the result of specific lifestyle behaviors or habits which can develop in childhood. Growing evidence suggests high levels of cardiovascular risk prevalence among school-aged children. Teaching strategies that are effective in seeking to promote health and well-being in children need to be developed and empirically evaluated. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine if there was a difference in pre and posttest knowledge levels about cardiovascular fitness and nutrition after a teaching module. Nola J. Pender's Health Promotion Model served as a guide for this research. The design used for …

Students represented practical nursing, associate degree nursing, and baccalaureate degree nursing programs and were all in their first nursing course. Entire cohort groups from each college were included in the study.

The Kolb (1985) Learning Style Inventory and the Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal (WGCTA, Watson & Glaser, 1980) were administered …

Alveolar Bone And Cementum Regeneration Following Periodontal Reconstructive Therapy : A Review Of Histologic Observations In Man And Experimental Animals, Karen E. Rodden Aug 1995

Alveolar Bone And Cementum Regeneration Following Periodontal Reconstructive Therapy : A Review Of Histologic Observations In Man And Experimental Animals, Karen E. Rodden

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Periodontal regeneration includes the formation of both alveolar bone and cementum. Studies reporting histologic evidence of healing following periodontal reconstructive therapy were reviewed to determine whether regeneration of these structures improves with increasing healing interval, and whether they regenerate independently or whether regeneration of one structure is dependent upon regeneration of the other. Additionally, the review addresses whether specific reconstructive modalities predictably yield increased amounts of regeneration. Differences in regenerative potential between humans, nonhuman primates, and canines were also examined. Results of over a decade of studies of periodontal reconstructive therapy were tabulated by family (human, nonhuman primate, and canine) …

Evaluation Of Nitric Oxide In Respiratory Distress Syndrome, Kimberly S. Myruski Aug 1995

Perception Of Emergency Department Registered Nurses Concerning The Role Of The Emergency Department Nurse Practitioner, Aarthur F. Rogers Aug 1995

Perception Of Emergency Department Registered Nurses Concerning The Role Of The Emergency Department Nurse Practitioner, Aarthur F. Rogers

MSN Research Projects

Emergency departments have become primary care sites for a substantial portion of the population. However, few emergency departments were designed to provide primary care to families or individuals. Implementation of the emergency department nurse practitioner (NP) has been proposed as a solution to providing comprehensive care and follow-up for non-urgent clients. Since emergency department NPs function in collaborative roles with other nurses, the perception of the emergency department registered nurses (RNs) needs to be delineated to verify acceptance and perceptions of this new expanded nursing role. The purpose of this study was to describe these acceptance and perceptual levels. King's …
