The Discriminative Stimulus Properties Of Morphine And U-50,488h In A Three-Key Assay: A Mu And Kappa Opioid Discrimination In The Pigeon, Malath Makhay Apr 1996

The Discriminative Stimulus Properties Of Morphine And U-50,488h In A Three-Key Assay: A Mu And Kappa Opioid Discrimination In The Pigeon, Malath Makhay

Dissertations

Opiate drugs have been classified in two-choice assays according to their ability to produce generalization in animals to the prototypicix opiate, morphine, versus vehicle, or to the k opioid, U -50,488H versus vehicle injections (Picker & Dykstra, 1987). A three-choice discrimination procedure, in which subjects discriminate among morphine, U -50,488H , and vehicle injections, might afford a greater degree of precision in characterizing the subjective effects of opioids. The feasibility of such a procedure was demonstrated in the present study, in which five pigeons were trained to discriminate among injections of 5 .6 m g/kg morphinel 5 .6 m g/kg …

Correlates Of The Mmpi-A Immaturity (Imm) Scale In An Adolescent Psychiatric Population, Eric Albert Imhof Apr 1996

Correlates Of The Mmpi-A Immaturity (Imm) Scale In An Adolescent Psychiatric Population, Eric Albert Imhof

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Despite numerous theories of adolescent ego development, there is no objective measure of ego development or maturation targeted for the assessment of adolescents. The Immaturity (IMM) Scale developed for the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory - Adolescent (MMPI-A) was designed to fill this void in adolescent assessment. The present study examined the concurrent validity of the IMM Scale based on sixty-six adolescents (13-18 years old) in an inpatient setting using four prominent measures of maturity, i.e., The Defining Issues Test (DIT), the Washington University Sentence Completion Test (WUSCT), the Extended Objective Measure of Ego Identity Status - Second Revision (EOM-EIS-2), and …

An Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay For The Detection Of Cardiac Myoglobin Using Monoclonal Antibodies, Deborah F. Kelly Apr 1996

An Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay For The Detection Of Cardiac Myoglobin Using Monoclonal Antibodies, Deborah F. Kelly

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

The most prevalent life-threatening disease worldwide, secondary to coronary artery thrombosis is Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI). Increases in three clinical markers have been explored as an early means of AMI detection: Cardiac myoglobin, and the two specific cardiac isoforms of Creatine Kinase, CK-MM and CK-MB. However, myoglobin levels have shown to give a more accurate correlation (R = 0.89) than does Creatine Kinase evaluation. Therefore, we have developed a two-site Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) using monoclonal antibodies against myoglobin isolated from human heart tissue. This assay is based on specific anti-genantibody interactions and is sensitive at the nanogram level. We …

The Assessment Of Osteoinductivity Of Human Allograft Demineralized Bone Matrix By In Vivo And In Vitro Assay Models, Min Zhang

Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences

The osteoinductive potential (osteoinductivity) is a very important aspect of demineralized bone matrix (DBM) as a biomaterial. This study is directed at establishing qualitative and quantitative assays of the osteoinductivity of human DBM. Further aspects of this study include an assessment of the effects of the production process, matrix characterization, and donor related factors on osteoinductivity of the DBM.

Athymic mice were chosen as the animal model for use in the in vivo bioassay. Implantation of DBM in muscle pouches provided for much higher osteoinductivity (remineralization to 10% calcium) than subcutaneous site implantation (remineralization to 1.6% calcium). Histological observations revealed …

Use Of The (3)H-Tetracycline Rat Model In The Study Of Skeletal Compartmentalization And Metabolism Of Calcium In The Maturing Male And Female Rat And The Role Of The Skeleton In Calcium Homeostasis In The Adolescent Male Rat, Darrin Lee Demoss

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The (3)H-tetracycline bone labeling procedure was employed to monitor bone resorption from urinary loss curves in male and female rats of various ages. In addition, whole body dry skeletal mass and the loss of (3)H-tetracycline from individual bones was determined. It was found that the dry skeletal mass/body mass ratio of 24-week-old females was 30-40% greater than that for males. The urinary loss of (3)H-tetracycline was described by a double exponential equation indicating the presence of two distinct and independent exchangeable bone compartments. Both compartments decrease in size with age, but their label loss activities were different. The label loss …

Regulation Of Melanogenesis In B16 Mouse Melanoma Cells By Protein Kinase C (Pkc), Harish Mahalingam Jan 1996

Regulation Of Melanogenesis In B16 Mouse Melanoma Cells By Protein Kinase C (Pkc), Harish Mahalingam

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The pigment cell-specific expression of tyrosinase and TRP1 has been shown to be important for the production of melanin in pigmented cells. Using a pigmented cell line, B16 mouse melanoma, we obtained evidence that PKC plays a major role in regulating melanogenesis. Chronic treatment with phorbol dibutyrate (PDBu) leads to downregulation of PKC activity and protein levels. This is accompanied by a loss of pigmentation which is correlated with a 50% reduction and a complete loss of TRP1 and tyrosinase respectively. Similar results were obtained with Northern and Western blotting indicating that PKC may regulate the steady state levels of …

Subtalar Joint Biomechanics, Tom L. Baumgartner Jan 1996

Subtalar Joint Biomechanics, Tom L. Baumgartner

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Subtalar joint movement is transmitted proximally to the lower extremity and distally to the forefoot during gait. Thus, the entire lower kinetic chain is influenced by abnormal subtalar joint biomechanics. If the subtalar joint is forced to compensate for structural deformities of the foot and leg, various lower extremity injuries are likely to develop. The purpose of this study is to examine the normal and abnormal biomechanics of the subtalar joint. In the process, the clinician will be able to identify various subtalar joint abnormalities and relate these to their respective lower kinetic chain pathologies. By correctly assessing the cause …

The Relationship Between Vertical Jump Scores And Peak Force Measurements Of An Isokinetic Leg Press, David M. Silkey Jan 1996

The Relationship Between Vertical Jump Scores And Peak Force Measurements Of An Isokinetic Leg Press, David M. Silkey

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

This study evaluated potential correlations between related closed kinematic chain strength measurements on a Kin-Com isokinetic machine and a functional strength test. The correlation between standing vertical jump height and isokinetic leg press measurements were statistically analyzed. The following measurements were obtained from 22 subjects (mean age of 24.4 years): a body weight measurement, a vertical jump score, and the force measurements of an isokinetic leg press at 90°/second on each leg. Pearson correlation coefficients were significant (p < .001) when power quotient scores (vertical jump height multiplied by body weight) were compared to leg press results. However, second-order partial correlation coefficients did not find a significance (p > .005) between vertical jump scores and isokinetic leg press results when weight and gender were considered. A significant difference (p < .001) existed between left leg press and right leg press measures. Although isokinetics are useful for lower extremity assessment, this study found that the isokinetic leg press may not be appropriate in determining functional ability.
