An Electromyographic Study Of Lower Trapezius Muscle Activity During Exercise In Traditional And Modified Positions, Rebecca Lee. Johnson Jan 2000

An Electromyographic Study Of Lower Trapezius Muscle Activity During Exercise In Traditional And Modified Positions, Rebecca Lee. Johnson

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Shoulder rehabilitation commonly overlooks the influence of scapular muscles in providing the stability necessary for the shoulder to function properly. When considering muscles acting on the scapulothoracic articulation, literature suggests that the lower trapezius is a key stabilizer of this articulation. Traditionally, the lower trapezius is exercised while the patient is in a prone position with the humerus abducted 1450 while performing forward elevation. Unfortunately, repeated overhead activity has been proven to increase the incidence of shoulder impingement. In an effort to avoid exercising the lower trapezius in a position that would compromise the shoulder complex, a modified position of …

The Use Of Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation In The Gait Training Of Children With Cerebral Palsy: A Literature Review, Rachel Rolfson Jan 2000

The Use Of Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation In The Gait Training Of Children With Cerebral Palsy: A Literature Review, Rachel Rolfson

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Cerebral palsy is a common developmental disorder that causes a wide array of problems in the population. The manifestations of cerebral palsy commonly interfere with the child's activities of daily living, including the important function of gait. It is therefore important that physical therapists be knowledgeable about the various treatment options used in gait training of children with cerebral palsy, as well as their effectiveness.

Neurodevelopmental techniques (NDT), neurosurgical interventions, and orthotics are just a few of the numerous treatment options available for the gait training of children with cerebral palsy. Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) has recently become a popular …

Cognitive Behavioral Intervention For Children With Disruptive Behavior Disorders In Residential Treatment, Kathryn Joanne Morin Silva Jan 2000

Cognitive Behavioral Intervention For Children With Disruptive Behavior Disorders In Residential Treatment, Kathryn Joanne Morin Silva

Theses Digitization Project

Increasing numbers of children being referred for mental health services are exhibiting problematic behaviors that can be subsumed under the category of Disruptive Behavior Disorders. This study with its foundations in a post-positivist approach was designed to explore treatment effectiveness of cognitive behavioral intervention applied to adolescents at Oak Grove Institute, a residential treatment facility. This study hypothesized that Wexler's PRISM Model, with its integration of affect, would be instrumental in modifying disruptive behavior as measured at Oak Grove Institute. Although the small sample size precluded statistically significant findings, there were interesting results with respect to two dependant variables. Findings …

The Assessment Of Caregiver Burden Among Participants In The Home-Based Primary Care Program, Dennis Kaney Jan 2000

The Assessment Of Caregiver Burden Among Participants In The Home-Based Primary Care Program, Dennis Kaney

Theses Digitization Project

With the increase in the elderly, American's caregiver roles and responsibilities are also on the rise. Developing with this increase is the growing problem of caregiver burden. The Loma Linda V. A. Hospital has developed a service known as the Home-Based Primary Care program designed to combat caregiver burden. Studies were conducted among caregiver participants in this program in an effort to evaluate overall levels of burden and the program's efficiency at meeting caregiver needs. Overall this program provides a useful model for future programs aimed at reducing caregiver burden. Limitations that can be improved, however, include consistency in scheduling, …

Determining How Stressors Effect The Onset Of Substance Abuse In Runaways, Christopher Parrish Rosselli Jan 2000

Determining How Stressors Effect The Onset Of Substance Abuse In Runaways, Christopher Parrish Rosselli

Theses Digitization Project

In America, it is estimated that between 500,000 and two million children run away each year. A majority of these runaways become involved with illegal substance abuse. This study questions whether children experience substance abuse prior to their running away or if their substance abuse is an attempt to cope with the new stressors created by street life. Data collection will include having 50 volunteers complete a questionnaire, with consideration of race and gender. The findings suggested that no relationship exist between runaways engaging in drug use and the amount of stress experienced at home or during the runaway.

Dissociative Identity Disorder: Integration Versus Non-Integration, Kris Jane Strande Jan 2000

Dissociative Identity Disorder: Integration Versus Non-Integration, Kris Jane Strande

Theses Digitization Project

For the mental health professional, the client with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) can be exciting, exhausting and frustrating. Formal education offers little help in treatment and diagnosis of this disorder. This paper will explore the most utilized treatment goals available to the professional and the client. Although most "experts" in the field of Dissociative Disorders subscribe to the treatment goal of integration, this study challenges that idea. As the results of the study indicate, integration was not the most utilized goal of treatment among the participants of this study.

Quadriceps And Hamstring Strength In Individuals With Total Knee Arthroplasty, Brooke J. Powers Jan 2000

Quadriceps And Hamstring Strength In Individuals With Total Knee Arthroplasty, Brooke J. Powers

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Currently, there are over 120,000 total knee arthroplasties (TKA) performed yearly in the United States with total hospital and physician expenses for each procedure ranging from $25,000 to $30,000. Majority of individuals who undergo a TKA continue to exhibit lower extremity strength deficits specifically quadriceps and hamstring weakness. Clinicians and physical therapists question if these individuals receive the level of rehabilitation necessary for the return of quadriceps and hamstring strength.

The purpose of this pilot study was to investigate the logistics of setting up a study to determine if there was a significant difference between the strength of the involved …

Using An Electronic Reminder To Improve Physician Practices At Yale-New Haven Hospital, Alicia Inés Arbaje

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The inappropriate use of diphenhydramine (Benadryl™) can lead to iatrogenic complications, such as cognitive decline. Electronic reminders can be effective in implementing clinical guidelines, providing decision support to clinicians, and reducing medical errors. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of an electronic reminder screen on physicians' routine use of diphenhydramine as a pretreatment prior to blood transfusions, and to assess their attitudes regarding this reminder. The researchers reviewed diphenhydramine use in adult inpatients before, immediately after, and one year after implementation of the reminder screen. A total of 752 transfusion episodes (467 patients) were reviewed, with …

Severity Of Illness And Prognosis Of Liver Transplant Candidates At Yale, Arvind Venkat Jan 2000

Severity Of Illness And Prognosis Of Liver Transplant Candidates At Yale, Arvind Venkat

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The increasing number of patients with end-stage liver disease (ESLD) listed for transplantation has forced physicians to examine the disparities in waiting times (WT) for this procedure across the US. The debate has centered upon whether physicians within regions with longer WT, such as that of Yale, are listing patients prematurely compared to regions with shorter WT . Using regional variations in WT, per this argument, to analyze access to organs is therefore misleading. To determine the appropriateness of listing practices at Yale, the authors applied stratification guidelines for liver transplant candidates adopted by the United Network for Organ Sharing …
