Cardiac Hypertrophy, Heart Failure, And Regulation Of Microtubule Stability, Kristie Lynn Beaton-Blade
Cardiac Hypertrophy, Heart Failure, And Regulation Of Microtubule Stability, Kristie Lynn Beaton-Blade
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
This work focused on the regulation of the different isotypes of beta-tubulin during cardiac hypertrophy, with the specific hypothesis that increased levels of the beta I isotype leads to the increase in microtubule density seen during hypertrophy. Partial cDNAs for the three beta-tubulin isotypes expressed in the heart (I, II, and IV) have been cloned and used to show that there is a differential upregulation of the beta I and beta II isotypes during cardiac hypertrophy. Messenger RNA half-life studies of cells isolated from hypertrophied myocardium have shown that this upregulation is due to increased transcription of the genes encoding …
The Relationship Between Jealousy And Self-Esteem In Collegiate Athletes, Paula M. Parker
The Relationship Between Jealousy And Self-Esteem In Collegiate Athletes, Paula M. Parker
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)
Previous research has found contradictory results when examining the possible relationship between jealousy and self-esteem (Guerrero & Afifi, 1998, Mathes & Severa, 1981; Mikulincer, Bizman, & Aizenberg, 1989, Peretti & Pudowski, 1997; Stewart & Beatty, 1985; White, 1981). Jealousy has been most often researched in romantic relationships (Peretti & Pudowski, 1997; Salovey & Rodin, 1986) and social comparison situations (Bers & Rodin, 1984, Mikulincer, Bizman, & .Aizenberg, 1989). Few studies have examined jealousy in an athletic setting. Sport jealousy has received little attention because until recently, there was no reliable instrument to measure jealousy in sport. Pease (1987) investigated the …

A Web Based Healthcare Management System, Farid Abdullah Muhammad
Student Works (2000-2009)
The project generally involved around the basic information about medical, health, drugs and diseases. This kind of information is vital yet has a very limited access. The tradition that when we get sick then we go to see doctor and ate whatever medicine that the doctor gave well, does not apply here anymore. People should know at least a simple thing about their health or medical status. They should know what they eat, what cause the illness or how to prevent it. This is possible as the system target on medical student and the public to make the system useful …

Muscle Responses To High-Intensity Eccentric Exercise : A Comparison Between Untrained And Highly Resistance-Trained Subjects, Gregory T. Morgan
Theses : Honours
Eccentric exercise, which is when the muscle produces force as it lengthens, has been shown to result in decrements to muscle functions. This study was designed to investigate whether there was a difference between the muscle responses of untrained (n = 8) and resistance-trained (n = 8) individuals after a bout of high-intensity eccentric exercise of the elbow flexors. All subjects were males aged 18 to 45 years and recruited based on specific training criteria. Subjects performed l0 sets of 6 maximal eccentric contractions of the elbow flexor muscles on an isokinetic dynamometer. 10 seconds rest was provided between each …

Cervical muscle strength was monitored in nine RAAF pilots completing an eight-month flight training course and ten controls matched for gender, age, height and weight. Cervical muscle strength and range of movement were measured at baseline and at eight months using the Multi-Cervical Rehabilitation Unit (Hanoun, Canada). Also measured, using EMG, was …
The Effects Of Ageing On The Myocardium, Alana J. Mason
The Effects Of Ageing On The Myocardium, Alana J. Mason
Theses : Honours
Investigating the causes of ageing on the myocardium is especially important for the future health of Australia's ageing population, which is increasing due to increased life expectancy (AIHW, 1999). Cardiovascular disease is currently Australia's greatest health problem ( AIHW, 1999), and since the aged population is most commonly affected by this disease (HSVD, 1999), investigating the causes of ageing of the myocardium and the predisposing factors of cardiovascular disease is important for the future health of Australia's ageing population. In this study, male and female Wistar rats [young (11 = 8, aged 12-30 weeks old), middle aged (11 = 6, …

The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of Positive Behavior Support (PBS), with children diagnosed with ADHD, when parents are consistent and compliant with PBS procedures. Two children participated in this study. Three assessment instruments were used as predictor variables, the PBS and ADHD Pre-test/Post-test Questionnaire, the Observation Rating Checklist of Compliance, and the …
The Specificity And Sensitivity Of The Criteria Used To Measure Vo2max, Geoffrey D. Juranovich
The Specificity And Sensitivity Of The Criteria Used To Measure Vo2max, Geoffrey D. Juranovich
Theses : Honours
The use of V02MAX as a measure of cardiorespiratory fitness is widespread throughout the fields of exercise physiology, physiology and medicine. VO2MAX is described as the maximal rate of oxygen consumption during increasing exercise intensities and is defined by a plateau or levelling off of oxygen consumption (VO2). Taylor et al. (1955) derived the primary criterion for a levelling off (plateau) of VO2 at the end of an incremental exercise test to exhaustion to be a change in VO2 (ΔVO2) /kg/min during the final minute. This primary criterion has been widely accepted …

Like A Banana Tree : Towards A Model Of Children In Disasters : An Exploration Of An Anthropological Problem, Jennie Anne Ricarda Marten
Theses : Honours
There is currently an emerging literature on the anthropology of disasters, and also an emergent literature on the new anthropology of childhood and children. Despite an extensive search, no significant body of literature on the anthropology of children in natural event based disasters could be found. A central focus of this thesis will be interrogate this gap through a documentary search, to ascertain what factors might influence the absence of children in the anthropology of disasters. To achieve this, the study defines and conceptualizes both the anthropology of disasters and the anthropology of children. Recent research shows that children are …
Predictors Of Young Men's Attitudes Toward Sexual Health Practices, Felicity C. Wright
Predictors Of Young Men's Attitudes Toward Sexual Health Practices, Felicity C. Wright
Theses : Honours
The present study examined whether cognitive (beliefs), affective (emotions) and behavioural processes predicted young men's attitudes toward sexual health practices. For pragmatic reasons, most sexual health interventions are based on the provision of factual information, meaning most evaluations of these interventions have focused on the cognitive sources which may lead to behavioural change. However, the importance of emotional and behavioural influences has also been indicated, though rarely considered. The present study hoped to clarify this issue using Zanna and Rempel's (1988) model of attitude formation. The study also provided some methodological extensions to the attitude literature. It examined the use …

Three Dimensional Gait Analysis Following The Adeli Treatment For Cerebral Palsy: A Case Report, Troy Lase
Masters Theses
This case report describes the use of three-dimensional gait analysis to identify kinematic changes following the Adeli suit treatment. The suit's original design was to decrease the effects of weightlessness in space but has been modified to become the primary modality for the Adeli treatment used to treat cerebral palsy. Data were quantitatively produced by three-dimensional gait analysis before and after treatment were used to identity any changes in gait. Following the Adeli treatment, instrumented gait analysis showed that no clinically significant changes in four critical events of gait following the Adeli treatment occurred.
