Exploring Nursing Faculty Perceived Individual And Organizational Readiness To Use Online Simulation As A Teaching Strategy, Luz-Patricia Torres

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Problem: Academic institutions have employed online simulations in nursing education to meet the needs of the growing nursing student population and demands for distance learning. While some nursing educators have been trained to use simulation learning experiences, few have specific training in applying online simulation as a teaching strategy. With a dearth of evidence in the literature specific to the use of online simulation in nursing education, exploring nursing faculty's perceived individual and organizational readiness to do so is warranted to optimize the use of this innovation.

Purpose: This study explored the nursing faculty's perceived individual and organizational readiness …

A Qualitative Study Exploring Us Graduate Medical Education Program Directors Decision-Making Practices Regarding The Selection Of Surgical Residency Applicants For Interview, Lashari Valentin

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Background: The goal of the General surgery residency selection process is to select residents who will transition easily from medical school to residency, complete the training program, pass their boards, practice surgery in a safe and effective manner, and contribute to the advancement of the specialty. Residency training programs receive thousands of applications annually from which they must choose a select few for an interview. The reality is, if medical students do not get into a residency training program, they can never practice as a physician. Pin-pointing match-worthy applicants from an increasingly deep and similar applicant pool is an …

Debriefing With Pearls & Watson’S Caritas, Heather A. Uccello

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Debriefing, an important aspect of students’ clinical experience, is a reflective, critical thinking analysis and communication strategy that provides rapid feedback after either a simulated or genuine clinical event. To teach this higher-level critical thinking skill throughout the learning process, nursing programs require specific methodology and faculty expertise. The National League for Nursing supports nurse educators having a theory-based strategy, formal training, and ongoing competency evaluation. Informed by Jean Watson’s Theory and the Promoting Excellence and Reflective Learning in Simulation standardized debriefing tool methodology, this project outlines a framework that nursing schools can use to potentially improve the debriefing process …

Athletic Training Educators’ Perceptions Of Interprofessional Education And Educational Strategies Used To Infuse Ipe Within Athletic Training Programs: A Mixed Methods Approach, Christina Orozco Nevers

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

BACKGROUND: As athletic trainers (ATs) educators and professionals we recognize the importance of preparing our students to practice as part of an interprofessional team and acknowledge that this training must begin while they are in the academy. Although there is lots of information about interprofessional education (IPE) in various other healthcare professions (HCPs), there is limited information about how AT educators are infusing IPE into the curriculum. To maximize the development of interprofessional teaming practices in healthcare we must first understand the most effective ways to infuse IPE in AT professional programs given how compact the curriculum is. Educators must …

An Examination Of Job Embeddedness Factors And Their Influence On Longevity And New Or Established Status Of Physician Assistant Faculty, Abby Saunders

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

The Physician Assistant (PA) profession has grown at a rapid rate with an expected increase of 31% by 2028 (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2019). PA educational programs are expanding to fill the demand. However, faculty shortages have persisted for years. During the 2017-2018 academic year, 75.5% of new faculty were recruited directly from the clinical environment with no prior experience in PA education, and for those who leave academia, 25.7% report a return to clinical practice (PAEA, 2018). New PA faculty are often not provided adequate mentorship or guidance which can influence perception of satisfaction in their academic positions.

Exploring Direct And Indirect Effects Of English Proficiency On Access, Utilization, And Health Status Among Californian Adults With Limited English Proficiency (Lep), Renee E. Pierre-Louis

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Background and Study Purpose: Findings from previous studies suggest that, in a health care delivery context, individuals with limited English proficiency (LEP) are adversely impacted by lack of patient-provider language concordance. Yet, the concept of LEP has been mostly studied in the context of cultural competence and language has been generally considered a demographic or cultural characteristic. There is a growing body of research concerning LEP and health status; however, it is limited. This study sought to evaluate the effects of LEP on access, utilization, and self-rated health status (SRHS) among LEP respondents to a large health interview survey …

Debriefing With Reflection: Best Practice For Learning In Simulation In Pre-Licensure Nursing Education, Mary Mcdermott

Seton Hall University DNP Final Projects

Purpose: The purpose of this project was intended to transform the outdated method of conducting debrief after simulation by implementing a good judgment model and integrating the concept of “advocacy-inquiry.” This implementation was expected to reduce demoralizing and anxiety producing debrief experiences and improve student reflection and learning in order for students to more deliberately link theory with practice.

Significance: The debrief is often recognized as the component of simulation in which the most effective learning occurs. It is the time when students are provided opportunity to reflect on thoughts, actions and behaviors. Unfortunately, many nursing students often experience undue …

Factors That Influence Job Choice At The Time Of Graduation For Physician Assistants, Lauren Anne Twombly Oct 2017

Factors That Influence Job Choice At The Time Of Graduation For Physician Assistants, Lauren Anne Twombly

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Current trends and data analysis show that there is a shortage of primary care providers throughout the United States. Physician assistants (PAs) who are mid-level practitioners, nationally certified, and state licensed to practice medicine, play an important role in healthcare delivery; however, the percentage of PAs practicing in primary care has dramatically decreased in the past 15 years. An important question to consider is what drives the decision-making process of job choice for PAs? The purpose of this dissertation was to identify potential modifiable factors that influence PA first job choice following graduation from a PA program in a national …

An Exploration Of Nurse Educators' Knowledge, Attitudes And Practice Of Horizontal Violence Measured Through Dimensions Of Oppression, Brenda Berner Petersen Jun 2017

An Exploration Of Nurse Educators' Knowledge, Attitudes And Practice Of Horizontal Violence Measured Through Dimensions Of Oppression, Brenda Berner Petersen

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

There is a paradox in the profession of nursing. Although nursing is known as the caring profession, evidence demonstrates that nurses do not care well for their own. Literature demonstrates that the phenomenon of horizontal violence (HV) is an international problem in the nursing profession, which negatively affects the nurse workplace environment. HV is broadly described as aggressive destructive behavior and intergroup conflict that occurs between nurses. Where behaviors of HV exist, the workplace becomes a toxic environment or nurses (Woefle & McCaffrey, 2007).

This dissertation provides the results of a research study exploring nurse educator’s knowledge, attitudes and practices …

Exploring The Critical Thinking Skills Of Respiratory Care Students And Faculty, Bshayer Ramadan Alhamad

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Introduction: Today, with the increased demands in health care, working as a competentrespiratory therapist requires being a highly skilled, critically thinking professional. Although students are expected to learn how to think critically mostly in the academic environment from their faculty, only a paucity of studies has assessed the critical thinking of respiratory care students, with none, to our knowledge, assessing that of faculty. Therefore, the purpose of this mixed method study was to (1) assess the overall critical thinking skill levels of both respiratory care students and faculty, (2) investigate whether respiratory care faculty have stronger overall critical thinking skills …

Exploring The Relationship Between And Among Registered Nurses' Spiritual Well-Being, Spiritual Care Perspectives, And Their Provision Of Spiritual Care In Acute Care Settings, Barbara J. Kitchener Aug 2016

Exploring The Relationship Between And Among Registered Nurses' Spiritual Well-Being, Spiritual Care Perspectives, And Their Provision Of Spiritual Care In Acute Care Settings, Barbara J. Kitchener

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Abstract

Despite acknowledgment that spiritual care is an essential aspect of holistic nursing care, nurses often feel ill-prepared for, uncomfortable with, and uncertain about providing spiritual care. Studies have indicated that nurses who have a strong sense of their own spiritual well-being and/or a positive perspective [attitude, value, belief] about spiritual care are more inclined to provide spiritual care to their patients. However there is a scarcity of such studies among acute care nurses. This descriptive correlational study aimed to explore relationships between and among acute care nurses’ spiritual well-being (SWB), spiritual care perspectives (SCP), and their provision of spiritual …

The Effects Of Videocasts On Student Learning In Medical Health Science Discipline, Jessica Viana

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

This quantitative study examines the effects of videocasts on student learning in a medical healthcare science discipline. The didactic nature of educational strategies is necessary in preparing future healthcare professionals. However, the manual skills cannot be reviewed once the student has left the classroom. Incorporating the use of videocasts into the resources for student learning adds another means for the students to follow and retain the skills acquired during class. Athletic training students in two accredited programs performed two class presentations over the course of one semester, one in the traditional format and one with the use of videocasts. The …

Accelerated Baccalaureate Nursing Students: Perceptions Of Success, Barbara B. Blozen

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Although there are a number of anecdotal reports on demographic characteristics and academic success of accelerated nursing students, few empirical studies have been undertaken to examine these students' success, despite this type of programs' existence for more than a decade, and only three studies have soughtto examine the perspective of the accelerated nursing student. Using Knowles' adult learning theory as a guiding framework, the purpose of this qualitative study was to explore, from the accelerated nursing students' perspective, the factors they reported as contributing to their success on the NCLEX-RN. This study also examined demographic characteristics of these accelerated students. …
