United States Food and Drug Administration: Publications

There has been much lay and medical concern regarding toxic effects of insecticides on the general population. In addition to direct toxic effects, it is suspected that insecticidal application has deleterious physical effects on persons with respiratory diseases. To evaluate some of these problems, the authors have attempted to quantitate actual absorption, symptoms, and laboratory evidence of intoxication in persons with varying degrees of exposure to parathion. By means of controlled observations, the respiratory effect of application of this compound on persons with bronchial asthma was also measured. Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Efficiency of sugar beet farming can be improved by feeding beet top silage to livestock.

In two recent trials at the Scotts Bluff Experiment Station lambs fed unwilted beet top silage as the only roughage gained significantly faster than lambs fed corn silage.

Amounts of concentrates were comparable (Nebraska Experiment Station Quarterly, Fall, 1962).

This experiment compared the feeding value of a complete mixture of unwilted beet tops and concentrate added at the time of ensiling, with beet top silage and concentrate handled separately. A conventional corn silage and concentrate ration was used as a control.

It is axiomatic in milieu therapy that the man on top is responsible for success or failure of the program. However, little research attention has been given to the impact of a superintendent upon an institution. One reason may be that only rarely is an institution's stewardship uncomplicated by a past history. This case report is of the first-year operation of a correctional institution for adolescent delinquent girls. The superintendent literally created policy and program and trained staff in an attempt to satisfy goals of custody and rehabilitation. One component of an MMPI Ego Strength Scale (Es) definition, personal adaptability, was investigated by behavioral, conscious, and fantasy measures of persistence. Male and female, high and low Es subjects, did not differ on these measures. Measures of persistence alone may be inadequate samples of the personal adaptability component of Es.
