The NAMRU-3 Medical Zoology program began during Easter week of 1950. We had just closed the NAMRU-3 field station at Torit, in Equatoria Province of soulheastern Sudan, and were heading homeward to the United States. However, the offer to remain in Egypt for a year or two to develop a Medical Zoology department at NAMRU-3 provided an interesting challenge after working for several years in tropical forests and grasslands of Africa and other continents. Although written forty-four years ago, this article provides a foundational analysis of the then-nascent beginnings of the legalization of artificial insemination from the judicial posture taken by the state of California to the legislative stance of Oklahoma. Analyzing the consequences of artificial insemination by a donor (A.I.D.) and by a woman’s husband (A.I.H.), the consequences of these procedures on family law — and especially illegitimacy — inheritance, and adultery, are studied and evaluated.

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this presentation, the possible role of computer graphics in macromolecular chemistry is demonstrated by reference to a molecular model building program running on a computer with a graphics console. The program was developed to pursue studies in protein configurations. A description of the program is given together with examples of the display produced.

Rated Pleasantness And Association Value Of 101 English Nouns, Albert Silverstein, Richard A. Dienstbier

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Ratings of pleasantness (PL) on a 7-point scale and of association value (a′) on a 5-point scale are reported for 101 two-syllable nouns. The ratings were obtained from two samples of 100 women each and two samples of 100 men each. Sizable differences were obtained between words on both scales. For women and men respectively, PL and a′ were correlated .570 and .585; PL and printed frequency were correlated .233 and .207; frequency and a′ were correlated .533 and .764. Women’s and men’s ratings correlated .973 for PL and .899 for a′.

Biomedical Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

The response of the normal human esophagus to an obstructing intraluminal bolus was investigated and compared to the response evoked by transient intraluminal distention. A balloon, immobilized within the esophagus by external attachment to a force transducer, was inflated with from 3 to 25 ml of air for from 3 to 210 sec. Pressure phenomena occurring in the esophagus were simultaneously recorded from the body of the esophagus above and below the balloon.

Transient distention (5 sec or less) with small volumes (5 ml or less) often evoked a secondary peristaltic wave in the esophagus distal to the balloon, but …
