Comparative Evaluation Of Health Delivery Projects Serving The Navajo Population, Navajo Health Authority

This is the final report of a comparative financial analysis contracted by the Navajo Nation, Navajo Health Authority. The analysis included the following health care units and facilities: 1) Project Hope, Ganado, Arizona; 2) Tuba City Service Unit; 3) Chinle Service Unit; and 4) Monument Valley Indian Hospital. The purpose of the study was to identify the cost of each project's health service program and to compare costs where it was feasible.

This dissertation examines the relationship between frequency response and word-discrimination performance of hearing-impaired persons. Three questions are addressed: does the restoration of the normal field-to-eardrum transfer function improve word discrimination; is the restoration of the normal shape of the audibility curve (uniform hearing level at all frequencies) beneficial to hearing-impaired listeners; and can speech discrimination be improved by an extension of the present narrow-band response in hearing aids.

The Effect Of Correlated Linguistic Dimensions On Speeded Classification Of Visually Presented Trigrams, John H. Flowers

The influence of two types of linguistic dimensions, word-nonword and consonant pronunciation, on classification speed of trigrams in card-sorting tasks of two levels of complexity was examined. In complex grouping tasks, which required the evaluation of more than one letter to classify each stimulus, sorting times were faster when the linguistic dimension was correlated with, rather than orthogonal to, the response categories. For tasks in which each stimulus could be classified on the basis of a single letter, no effect of the correlated vs orthogonal linguistic dimension was observed, even when performance was degraded by visual noise. Health education is a process which effects changes in the health practices of people and in the knowledge and attitudes related to such changes. Education is an internal process for the individual concerned. He educates himself, even though his education is assisted by such means as contacts with health workers, appeals directed to him, information made available, clarification of issues, alternatives, and consequences as a basis for a rational choice. Education thus places responsibility on the individual and is essentially different from a compliance approach. It involves motivation, communication and decision-making. Kenya and Ethiopia handled the drought very differently, both in action and public statements. Ethiopian officials in the south spoke openly and candidly about famine and starvation and willingly gave access to mortality statistics. They also bitterly criticized the former regime for its inept attempt to deal with the famine. Kenya's administrators were cautious and guarded; they denied that any great suffering had occurred and sought to avoid publicity. Missionaries in northern Kenya were advised to give aid without fanfare, not to write home about the famine, and to keep conditions confidential.

The Effect Of Simultaneous And Sequential Presentation Of Stimulus Dimensions On Absolute Judgment Accuracy, John H. Flowers

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The effects of spatial stimulus repetition, sequential stimulus repetition, spatially separated dimensional redundancy, and sequentially presented dimensional redundancy on absolute judgment accuracy of hue and brightness were compared. Two exposure durations, 0.1 and 2.0 sec, were used. While spatial repetition did not improve accuracy for either dimension, the sequential repetition of brightness produced a small increase in accuracy. The spatial presentation of correlated values of both dimensions increased accuracy only at the 2.0-sec duration. The sequential presentation of both dimensions increased accuracy, but only at the 2.0-sec duration was this gain substantial and greater than that provided by the sequential …
