The pig was a forest-dwelling animal from the beginning of its history. In some parts of the world it has been domesticated for at least 7000 years. The European breeds of domestic swine were derived from the local wild pig, Sus scrofa. Herds ranged in pastures and forests and kept indoors only for fattening. The breeds in the Far East were derived from another wild pig, Sus vittatus, a smaller animal with shorter legs and a higher reproductive ability (Mohr 1960; Zeuner 1963). Hydrodynamic Structure Of Bovine Serum Albumin Determined By Transient Electric Birefringence, A. K. Wright, M. R. Thompson

Physiology and Biophysics Publications and Presentations

Birefringence relaxation studies on bovine serum albumin (BSA) reveal transient decay described by a double exponential process. The values of the relaxation times lead to estimation of the size of the equivalent ellipsoid of revolution for BSA. Previous measurements of transient birefringence for BSA have shown a single relaxation process, since the apparatus used in obtaining those data was not fast enough to detect the faster relaxation process.

During 1973 and 1974 a large range of fungicide spray and seed treatment schedules were tested. The 1973 results were, on the whole, not very encouraging, but the very early post-germination spray, two weeks after germination, did indicate a possible means of control. In view of the 1973 results, in the 1974 trials fungicidal sprays were applied early, and a new method of application of fungicide to the seed, known as "prilling" was used. Using fungicide seed prills and seedless fungicide prills the idea was to have the fungicide mixed with materials which dispersed upon wetting, so releasing and making …

The project mission was to review and evaluate the operations of the Sanitation Facilities Construction Branch (SFCB) of the Oklahoma Area Office of Environmental Health. The information presented is most relevant to projects involving construction (sanitation and water), but the general principles and sequences are pertinent to most environmental health projects. The evaluation plan suggested that the Advisory Board use is consumer rather than engineering oriented.

Indian Health Service (IHS), a component of the Health Service Administration, Public Health Service, is the principal provider of medical care and public health services to nearly one-half million American Indians and Alaska Natives. In the fiscal year 1975, Congress appropriated some $230 million for IHS personal health services, an amount believed to fall short of need by $70 million. The objective is to close this gap with alternative funding, such as Medicare and Medicaid.

"Sensory" Interference In A Word-Color Matching Task, John H. Flowers

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Two experiments measured RTs for matching sequentially displayed color names to color patches. Experiment I demonstrated that printing the name in an incongruent color produced longer RTs than when the name was printed in black ink or a congruent colored ink, provided the time interval between the name display and the color patch display was brief (less than 100 msec). This interference was attenuated with longer delays. In Experiment II, a wider range of irrelevant colors was combined with the name display, and RT was found to be correlated with the colorimetric dissimilarity between the name and the irrelevant color. …

In the annals of job health and safety, 1974 was a signal year. It produced an epidemic of occupational liver cancer associated with vinyl chloride disclosure of a plan to soft-pedal federal regulation of industrial hazards in return for contributions to the 1972 Nixon reelection campaign, and the publication of a brace of exposes decrying the human toll taken by workplace perils. These events furnish hard evidence that the bright hopes raised by passage of the landmark Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 remain far from fulfillment.
