Understanding The Health And Social Service Needs Of People Over Age 65, Laurence G. Branch

The complexity of the issues involved with providing appropriate health care and social services from the appropriate setting to people over age 65 can hardly be overstated. One of the present debates in the field focuses on the value of institutions as the customary setting for providing health care; the arguments are based on considerations of economic efficiency and the recipient's quality of life. Some of the debators suggest deinstitutionalizing as many of the health care recipients as possible, while simultaneously upgrading the quality and quantity of home based support services. Inactivation Of Brain Hexokinase By An Adenosine 5'-Triphosphate Analog, Subbarao Bondada, Umakant W. Kenkare

An analog of ATP, 6-mercapto-9+nribofuranosylpurine 5’-triphosphate (SH-TP), functions as a phosphoryl donor for the reaction catalyzed by hexokinase. Incubation of the enzyme with millimolar concentrations of this reagent led to its rapid inactivation. However, the corresponding monophosphate derivative of this reagent was much less effective. A plot of the initial rate of inactivation versus the concentration of SH-TP exhibited saturation, suggesting the formation of a reversible complex between the enzyme and SH-TP prior to the inactivation reaction. The dissociation constant of this enzyme-inhibitor complex was the same as the K, of this reagent with respect to hexokinase in the phosphoryl …

Doctor Buckley, of Los Angeles, became the sixtieth president of the Association at the 1922 meeting in Los Angeles. Under a new charter granted by the State of Illinois in June 1922, the name was changed from National Dental Association to American Dental Association. Doctor Buckley was president of the Illinois State Dental Society in 1915. He was professor of materia medica and therapeutics at the Chicago College of Dental Surgery from 1904 to 1927, although his residence was in California after 1918. He was the author of a textbook used by many univer­sities, entitled Modern Dental Materia Medica, Pharmacology …

Doctor Brown, of Columbus, Ohio, was elected fifty-first president of the Association at the 191 3 meeting in Kansas City, Missouri. The Association was reorganized in 1913 under a new Constitution and Bylaws which established the House of Delegates and the Board of Trustees. Doctor Brown was chairman of the Committee on Dental Legislation for 21 years following his presidency. Through his efforts the status of dentists in the armed forces was equalized by law with that of physicians, and proposals for a sharp in­crease in tariffs on dental imports were defeated. Doctor Harlan, of Chicago, was elected thirtieth president of the Association at the 1890 meeting at Excelsior Springs, Missouri. He had served as first vice president the two preceding years and as corresponding secretary from 1882 until 1887. Doctor Harlan was professor of materia medica and therapeutics at the Chicago College of Dental Surgery for more than 20 years. He established the Dental Review and was its editor for many years. Doctor Harlan served as president of the Illinois and Chicago dental societies and as secretary of the World's Columbian Dental Congress. He was born in Indiana in 1851 and …

Doctor Oliver, of Philadelphia, became the sixty-eighth president of the Association at the 1930 meeting in Denver. His presidential address was a scholarly review of the history of the young profession of dentistry in the United States. Doctor Oliver served for many years as chief of the dental corps of the United States Army. Shortly after graduating in 1888 from the Indiana Dental College, he became professor of oral surgery at that institution. Doctor Ostrander, an endodontist and educator, was speaker of the House of Delegates from 1961 to 1966. He was a member of the Council on Dental Therapeutics for 18 years and was its chairman in 1960-1961. Doctor Scherer, a professor of oral medicine and a private practitioner, served as president of the American Academy of Periodontology, the Houston Dental Society, and the Texas State Dental Society. The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (excluding Mazes and Digit Span) was administered to 64 third-grade children, randomly selected for IQ. Eight examiners, four males and four females, each tested eight children, four boys and four girls. Female examiners elicited higher Full Scale IQ, Verbal IQ, Comprehension, Similarities, and Vocabulary scores from all children.

Reaction Of Brain Hexokinase With Tetranitromethane: Oxidation Of Essential Thiol Groups, Subbarao Bondada, Umakant W. Kenkare

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

Treatment of bovine brain mitochondrial hexokinase with a fivefold molar excess of tetranitromethane (TNM) at pH 8.0 results in a complete loss of activity of the enzyme. Spectral measurements and amino acid analysis showed that only cysteinyl residues were modified by TNM under these conditions. The products of the reaction of TNM with the enzyme were cysteic acid and disulfides as found by amino acid analysis of the carboxymethylated hexokinase. Failure of 2-mercaptoethanol to reverse the effect of TNM suggested that the thiol group that is oxidized to cysteic acid is the one essential for enzyme activity. Substrates glucose and …

NMR relaxation times have been used to characterize molecular motion and intermolecular complexes in the aqueous phase of bovine chromaffin granules. Partially relaxed '3C and proton spectra have been obtained at 3 and 25°C. T1 measurements of five protonated carbons on epinephrine (C:, Cs, C6, CHOH and NCH3) give a correlation time of 0.15 (10 -9) s at 25°C for the catechol ring and methine carbon, while the effective correlation time for the NCH3 group is somewhat shorter due to its internal degree of rotational freedom. Natural abundance carbon-13 and proton NMR spectra of bovine chromaffin granules have been obtained and analyzed using computer simulation techniques. High resolution spectra show the presence of a fluid aqueous phase containing epinephrine, ATP and a random coil protein. The protein spectrum conrains unusually intense resonances due to glutamic acid and proline and has been simulated satisfactorily using the known amino acid composition of chromogranin A.

The lipid phase of chromaffin granules gives rise to intense, but very broad, resonances in the carbon-13 spectrum. Protons in the lipid phase are also observable as a very rapid component of the proton-free …

Selective Attention Between Words, Shapes And Colors In Speeded Classification And Vocalization Tasks, John H. Flowers, Charles M. Stoup

The presence of irrelevant words (incongruent color and shape names) substantially slowed the sorting of shapes and colors. This interference was maintained over four sessions of practice for color sorting, but essentially vanished for shape classification and color classification using stimuli in which the word and color were physically separated. Interference with oral naming was maintained over 4 days of practice for all types of stimuli, demonstrating that spatial selectivity of attention is highly dependent upon the response requirements of the task.

Pictorial Interference With Geometric Shapes And Achromatic Shades, Richard P. Compton, John H. Flowers

In two experiments, subjects were required to match printed names with subsequently displayed achromatic shades or geometric shapes. The presence of incongruent shades or shapes at the time of word display substantially slowed the RT for performing the match.
