Technical Report For Personality Assessment Of Rosebud Sioux: A Comparison Of Rorschach, Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory And 16pf Reports, Richard H. Dana, Rodger Hornby, Tom Hoffmann Jan 1986

Technical Report For Personality Assessment Of Rosebud Sioux: A Comparison Of Rorschach, Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory And 16pf Reports, Richard H. Dana, Rodger Hornby, Tom Hoffmann

Regional Research Institute for Human Services

Three standard assessment instruments (Rorschach, Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory and 16PF) were administered to 12 participating Rosebud Sioux Indians -- 6 males, 6 females. Reports were generated for each instrument. Consensual and unique concepts contained in all the reports were analyzed in order to describe the contents. Six judges, all residents of the reservation and either college employees or social agency personnel attempted to match the participants with their reports. The judges may not have known all of the participants intimately, but they were well acquainted with the facts of their libes. Two general questions were explored: (1) can people …

Digoxin-Quinidine Interaction In The Neonatal Dog, Arthur S. Pickoff, Adrienne Stolfi, Henry Gelband Jan 1986

Digoxin-Quinidine Interaction In The Neonatal Dog, Arthur S. Pickoff, Adrienne Stolfi, Henry Gelband

Medical Education Faculty Publications

The effects of quinidine on steady state serum and tissue digoxin concentrations in the neonatal dog were studied. To determine the effects of quinidine on serum digoxin concentrations, two groups of neonates were evaluated: Group I (n = 11) was digitalized with 40 μg/kg body weight, intramuscularly, and placed on a 10 μg/kg per day maintenance dose; Group II (n = 7) was digitalized with 50 μg/kg per day, intraperitoneally, and placed on a 20 μg/kg per day maintenance dose. After 10 days of digoxin alone, quinidine was coadministered (30 mg/kg per day, intraperitoneally) for 7 days. Serum digoxin concentrations …

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Hemoglobin Karachi is a new a chain Variant with amino acid substitution a 5 (A3) Ala-“ Pro. The hematological data on the propositus were normal. In cellulose acetateelectro phoresis this hemoglobin migrated towards the anode slower than HbA.

It is the first a-chain abnormal hemoglobin reported from Pakistani population (JPMA 36:206, 1986).

The Women's Construction Collective: Building For The Future, Ruth Mcleod Jan 1986

The Women's Construction Collective: Building For The Future, Ruth Mcleod

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

This edition of SEEDS focuses on a project developed to integrate low-income women into Jamaica's construction industry. In two years, 34 women passed through the project's basic training and skills upgrading courses. More than 90 percent of these women became employed, the majority as masons and carpenters. The story of how this field was identified as a potential source of income for women, and how the project developed and evolved in response to changing circumstances, presents many useful lessons. These should be of particular interest to those seeking to identify employment areas where women's participation is feasible and in helping …

Evaluation And Model Of A Clinical Librarian Program, Elizabeth King Eaton Jan 1986

Evaluation And Model Of A Clinical Librarian Program, Elizabeth King Eaton

Library Staff Publications

Clinical medical librarianship is entering its second decade, but little evaluative data has accrued in the literature. Variations from the original programs and novel new approaches have insured the survival of the program so far. The clinical librarian (CL) forms a vital link between the library and the health care professional, operating as an important information transfer agent. However, to further insure the survival of these vital programs, hard evaluative evidence is needed. The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) at Galveston began a CL Program in 1978/79. An extensive three-year pre/post evaluation study was conducted using a specifically developed …

Activity Of An Identified Histaminergic Neuron, And Its Possible Role In Arousal Of Feeding Behavior In Semi-Intact Aplysia, Hillel J. Chiel Jan 1986

Activity Of An Identified Histaminergic Neuron, And Its Possible Role In Arousal Of Feeding Behavior In Semi-Intact Aplysia, Hillel J. Chiel

Faculty Scholarship

The possible functions of histaminergic neuron C2 were studied in an isolated head preparation from which it was possible to obtain intracellular recordings while the buccal mass exhibited feeding-like responses. Application of food to the lips of the isolated head preparation elicited rhythmic buccal movements that appeared to be ingestion responses, since they moved seaweed into the buccal cavity and towards the esophagus, and their frequency and regularity was similar to the ingestion responses studied in a group of intact animals. The ingestion responses of the buccal mass consisted of 2 main phases of movement of the radula from a …

Formation Of Influenza Virus Particles Lacking Hemagglutinin On The Viral Envelope, Asit K. Pattnaik, Donald J. Brown, Debi P. Nayak Jan 1986

Formation Of Influenza Virus Particles Lacking Hemagglutinin On The Viral Envelope, Asit K. Pattnaik, Donald J. Brown, Debi P. Nayak

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

We investigated the intraceUular block in the transport of hemagglutinin (HA) and the role of HA in virus particle formation by using temperature-sensitive (Is) mutants (1s134 and 1s61S) of inOuenza virus AlWSN/33. We found that at the nonpermissive temperature (39.5°C), the exit of ts HA from the rough endoplasmic reticulum to the Golgi complex was blocked and that no additional block was apparent in either the exit from the Golgi complex or post-Golgi complex transport. When MDBK ceUs were infected with these mutant viruses, they produced noninfectious virus particles at 39.5°C. The efficiency of particle formation at 39.5°C was essentiaUy …

Memory For Tune Titles After Organized Or Unorganized Presentation, Andrea R. Halpern Jan 1986

Memory For Tune Titles After Organized Or Unorganized Presentation, Andrea R. Halpern

Faculty Journal Articles

Two experiments investigated the structure of memory for titles of 54 familiar tunes. The titles were presented in the form of a hierarchy, with nodes labeled by genre (e.g., Rock or Patriotic). Four groups of subjects received logical or randomized titles, and logical or randomized labels. Goodness of label and title structure had equal and additive beneficial effects on recall with a 3-min exposure of the stimuli. With a 4-min exposure, good title structure became a larger contributor to good recall. Clustering analyses suggested that subjects were mentally representing the tune titles hierarchically, even when presentation was random.

Caring Choices: Decision-Making About Treatment For Catastrophically Ill Newborns, Betty Wolder Levin Jan 1986

Caring Choices: Decision-Making About Treatment For Catastrophically Ill Newborns, Betty Wolder Levin

Publications and Research

Decision making for catastrophically ill newborns has recently emerged as a social issue. Advances in biomedical technology and practice, and changes in other economic, social and political factors have led to controversy about norms to guide treatment choice. While much has been written on how such decisions should be made, there has been little social science research on how such decisions are actually made.

The purpose of this dissertation is to elucidate the way that clinicians think about treatment decisions for catastrophically ill newborns. The focus is on decision making with respect to the limitation of treatment in those situations …
