"Cradled On The Sea": Positive Images Of Prison And Theories Of Punishment, Martha Grace Duncan
"Cradled On The Sea": Positive Images Of Prison And Theories Of Punishment, Martha Grace Duncan
Faculty Articles
This interdisciplinary study investigates the meanings of incarceration through an analysis of prison memoirs and novels. It argues that many prisoners and nonprisoners exhibit powerful positive associations to penal confinement. The Article draws on psychoanalysis, philosophy, and sociology to account for the various kinds of attraction that prison exerts. The Article also considers the interrelationships between the analysis of the positive images and three traditional purposes of punishment: rehabilitation, deterrence, and retribution.
Perceived And Imagined Tempos Of Familiar Songs, Andrea R. Halpern
Perceived And Imagined Tempos Of Familiar Songs, Andrea R. Halpern
Faculty Journal Articles
Two studies investigated the similarity of metronome settings to perceived and imagined familiar songs by subjects unselected for musical ability. In Study 1, mean tempo settings in the two tasks were about 100 beats per minute. Songs with slower perceived tempos tended to be faster in the imagery task and vice versa. In Study 2, subjects set fastest and slowest acceptable tempos for the same set of songs in the imagery mode. These settings were positively correlated with the preferred tempo for the song. Most subjects thought that there were limits on how fast or slow a song could be …

Cognitive, Behavioral, And Adaptive Functioning In Fragile X And Non-Fragile X Retarded Men, E. Dykens, J. Leckman, Rhea Paul, M. Watson
Cognitive, Behavioral, And Adaptive Functioning In Fragile X And Non-Fragile X Retarded Men, E. Dykens, J. Leckman, Rhea Paul, M. Watson
Communication Disorders Faculty Publications
The cognitive, behavioral, and adaptive functioning of 12 men with fragile X syndrome (aged 23 to 62 years) was systematically assessed and compared to two matched groups of retarded men without fragile X syndrome residing at the same institution. The fragile X group was largely indistinguishable from the comparison groups on the cognitive, behavioral, and adaptive measures. Fragile X patients were, however, significantly more likely to have achieved levels of adaptive functioning commensurate with their intellectual abilities. Fragile X subjects who had similarly affected siblings emerged as significantly higher-functioning in all areas than Fragile X subjects who did not have …
Enhanced Effect Of Liposome-Encapsulated Amikacin On Mycobacterium Avium-M. Intracellulare Complex Infection In Beige Mice, Nejat Düzgüneş, Veluchamy K. Perumal, L. Kesavalu, Jayne A. Goldstein, Robert J. Debs, Pattisapu R.J. Gangadharam
Enhanced Effect Of Liposome-Encapsulated Amikacin On Mycobacterium Avium-M. Intracellulare Complex Infection In Beige Mice, Nejat Düzgüneş, Veluchamy K. Perumal, L. Kesavalu, Jayne A. Goldstein, Robert J. Debs, Pattisapu R.J. Gangadharam
All Dugoni School of Dentistry Faculty Articles
We examined the therapeutic effects of free and liposome-encapsulated amikacin on Mycobacterium avium-M. intracellulare complex infection by using the beige-mouse model of the disease. In the first series of studies, intravenous administration of four weekly doses of 5 mg of amikacin per kg encapsulated in large (approximately 0.4-μm diameter), unilamellar liposomes arrested the growth of M. avium-M. intracellulare complex organisms in the liver, as measured by CFU counts. M. avium-M. intracellulare complex levels in untreated animals and in those treated with the same dose of free amikacin increased by several orders of magnitude over 8 weeks. Liposome-encapsulated amikacin was also …
Nutritional Parameters Predicting Postoperative Infections, Jamsheer Talati, M. Shameem, Mohammad Khurshid
Nutritional Parameters Predicting Postoperative Infections, Jamsheer Talati, M. Shameem, Mohammad Khurshid
Department of Surgery Docs
Thirteen nutritional parameters viz body mass index (BMI), mid arm circumference (MAC), mid calf circumference (MCC), triceps skin fold thickness (TST), abdominal skin fold thickness (ASFT), abdominal girth at umbilicus (AG U), haemoglobin (Hb), total leucocytes count (WBC), absolute lymphocyte count (ALC), serum proteins (Prot.), serum albumin (AIb), serum total iron binding capacity (TIBC) and serum iron (Fe) were estimated in 52 (36 male and 16 female) consecutive patients admitted to a surgical service at the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, Karachi. Nine males and one female developed surgical infections whilst the wounds of 27 males and 15 females healed by primary …
Purification Of Maturation-Promoting Factor, An Intracellular Regulator Of Early Mitotic Events, Manfred J. Lohka, Marianne K. Hayes, James L. Maller
Purification Of Maturation-Promoting Factor, An Intracellular Regulator Of Early Mitotic Events, Manfred J. Lohka, Marianne K. Hayes, James L. Maller
School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications
Maturation-promoting factor causes germinal vesicle breakdown when injected into Xenopus oocytes and can induce metaphase in a cell-free system. The cell-free assay was used to monitor maturation-promoting factor during its purification from unfertilized Xenopus eggs. Ammonium sulfate precipitation and six chromatographic procedures resulted in a preparation purified >3000-fold that could induce germinal vesicle breakdown within 2 hr when injected into cycloheximide- treated oocytes. Proteins of 45 kDa and 32 kDa were correlated with fractions of highest activity in both assays. These fractions contained a protein kinase activity able to phosphorylate the endogenous 45-kDa protein, as well as histone Hi, phosphatase …
Sensitivity To Ingested Sulfites, Steve L. Taylor, Julie A. Nordlee
Sensitivity To Ingested Sulfites, Steve L. Taylor, Julie A. Nordlee
Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications
Sulfiting agents, including sodium and potassium bisulfite, sodium and potassium metabisulfite, sodium sulfite, and sulfur dioxide, have enjoyed widespread use as food and drug ingredients. The oral ingestion of these sulfiting agents is now known to trigger asthma in a small subset of the asthmatic population. The best evidence suggests that perhaps 150,000 to 200,000 individuals in the United States may be sulfite sensitive. Although the mechanism of sulfite-induced asthma remains unknown, several possibilities have been considered, including inhalation of sulfur dioxide (SO2) while swallowing, an IgE-mediated reaction, and a deficiency of sulfite oxidase leading to impaired sulfite …
A Civil Liberties Analysis Of Surrogacy Arrangements, Lawrence O. Gostin
A Civil Liberties Analysis Of Surrogacy Arrangements, Lawrence O. Gostin
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
In this essay the author comes to the following conclusions based upon a civil liberties analysis. First, surrogacy arrangements cannot be prohibited or criminalized. Second, the state cannot ban the exchange of money for surrogacy services, provided the money is paid for conception, gestation, and birth. Money, however, cannot be paid on condition that the gestational mother waive her parental rights over the child. Third, contractual provisions that require the gestational mother to waive her parental rights or her rights to privacy and autonomy are void and unenforceable. Fourth, when the child is born, both the gestational mother and the …
