Arousal And Physiological Toughness: Implications For Mental And Physical Health, Richard A. Dienstbier Apr 1989

Arousal And Physiological Toughness: Implications For Mental And Physical Health, Richard A. Dienstbier

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

From W. B. Cannon’s identification of adrenaline with “fight or flight” to modern views of stress, negative views of peripheral physiological arousal predominate. Sympathetic nervous system (SNS) arousal is associated with anxiety, neuroticism, the Type A personality, cardiovascular disease, and immune system suppression; illness susceptibility is associated with life events requiring adjustments. “Stress control” has become almost synonymous with arousal reduction. A contrary positive view of peripheral arousal follows from studies of subjects exposed to intermittent stressors. Such exposure leads to low SNS arousal base rates, but to strong and responsive challenge- or stress-induced SNS-adrenal-medullary arousal, with resistance to brain …

The experiences of medical students, residents, and faculty with a computerized literature searching system were evaluated. Third-year medical students, internal medicine and family practice residents, and full-time and voluntary faculty at one medical school had the opportunity to use a full-text and bibliographic medical literature retrieval system free of charge for an eleven-month period. Subjects conducted nearly nine thousand literature searches over a period of 942 system hours. Questionnaire data showed that participants could learn to use and would use an electronic information system, felt capable of using the system, utilized the system for a variety of purposes and in …

Specificity Of The Cardiac Response To Conspecific Vocalizations In Chimpanzees, Gary G. Berntson, Sarah T. Boysen Apr 1989

Specificity Of The Cardiac Response To Conspecific Vocalizations In Chimpanzees, Gary G. Berntson, Sarah T. Boysen

Sentience Collection

Heart rate measures were used to examine the functional response of young chimpanzees and orangutans to acoustic stimuli, including white noise and chimpanzee vocalizations (threat, stress, and alarm). The initial response of the animals to all stimuli was characterized by a prominent cardiac deceleration and an increase in heart period variability. The deceleratory responses persisted with repeated presentations of the noise, stress, and alarm stimuli. In contrast, the response of chimpanzees to the conspecific threat stimulus reverted over trials to a notable cardiac acceleration. This acceleratory response was not attributable to potential patterns of evoked somatic responses. The features of …

Edema Disease-Like Brain Lesions In Gnotobiotic Piglets Infected With Escherichia Coli Serotype 0157:H7, David H. Francis, Rodney A. Moxley, Cecile Y. Andraos

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Gnotobiotic piglets inoculated with Escherichia coli serotype 0157:H7 strains that produced Shiga-like toxin II developed brain lesions similar to those observed in edema disease of swine, including arteriolar necrosis and malacia. Loss of ability to produce Shiga-like toxin II resulted in loss of ability to cause brain lesions.

Effects Of Age On Motor Preparation And Restructuring, Paul Amrhein, Noreen Goggin, George Stelmach Mar 1989

Effects Of Age On Motor Preparation And Restructuring, Paul Amrhein, Noreen Goggin, George Stelmach

Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Age-related decrements in motor plan restructuring were investigated. In this experiment, older and younger adults performed a discrete aiming task that involved responses that were precued and responses that were modified at the time of an imperative signal. On 75% of the trials, the precue specified the response-stimulus (valid trials) with respect to the movement parameters of the arm (left or right) and direction (toward or away). On the remaining 25% of the trials, the response-stimulus was different from the precue (invalid trials) in that the subject was required to modify a planned movement by changing the arm to be …

Impairment Of Melibiose Utilization In Streptococcus Mutans Serotype C Gtfa Mutants, Raul G. Barletta, Roy Curtiss Iii Mar 1989

Impairment Of Melibiose Utilization In Streptococcus Mutans Serotype C Gtfa Mutants, Raul G. Barletta, Roy Curtiss Iii

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

The Streptococcus mutans serotype c gtfA gene encodes a 55-kilodalton sucrose-hydrolyzing enzyme. Analysis of S. mutans gtfA mutants revealed that the mutant strains were specifically impaired in the ability to use melibiose as a sole carbon source. S. mutans gafA mutant strains synthesized less α-galactosidase activity inducible by raffinose than wild-type strains. Melibiose (an inducer in wild-type strains) failed to induce significant levels of a-galactosidase in the mutant strains. We hypothesize that melibiose use by . mutans requires the interaction of the GtfA enzyme, or another gene product under the control of the gtfA promoter, with other gene product(s) involved …

Identification Of Stage-Specific Antigens Of Toxoplasma Gondii., Lloyd H. Kasper Mar 1989

Identification Of Stage-Specific Antigens Of Toxoplasma Gondii., Lloyd H. Kasper

Dartmouth Scholarship

An immunologic evaluation of the surface antigens of the three major life-cycle stages of Toxoplasma gondii was performed. Mouse antisera were raised against these stages, which included the oocyst-sporozoite (feline-excreted stage), bradyzoite (chronic tissue cyst stage), and tachyzoite (invasive stage). The antisera were used in an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and Western blot (immunoblot) analysis to demonstrate the presence of stage-specific antigens. These antigens were of various molecular weights and were specific to each stage investigated. Cross-reaction studies showed that the mouse antisera recognized commonly shared antigens to at least two of the three stages. A panel of monoclonal antibodies identified …

Innovation And Education: Unlimited Potential For The Teaching Library., Mary Moore Phd

Faculty Research, Publications, and Presentations

The information age demands that health sciences librarians take active roles in the educational process. Librarians have traditionally taught users how to access information. Now, with the proliferation of information, librarians must accept new roles and teach the user efficient techniques for evaluating and processing information as well. Innovative roles for librarians at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center include teaching users to use technology for information management, to appraise literature critically for quality, and to develop skills for lifelong learning. This paper reviews the history of educational activities in health sciences libraries and describes the teaching programs at Texas …

Cytomegalovirus And Child Day Care, Stuart P. Adler , M.D. Jan 1989

Cytomegalovirus And Child Day Care, Stuart P. Adler , M.D.

Internal Medicine Publications

Abstract

To determine whether day-care workers acquire cytomegalovirus infection from the children they care for, we studied 610 women employed at 34 day-care centers over two years.

Forty-one percent of the caretakers were seropositive for cytomegalovirus. After adjustment for the effects of race, marital status, and age on seropositivity, the women who cared for children younger than two years of age had a significantly higher seropositivity rate (46 percent) than the women who cared for children older than two years of age (35 percent) (relative risk, 1.29; 95 percent confidence interval, 1.05 to 1.57; P<0.02).

Of 202 initially seronegative caretakers …

Pharmacokinetics Of Gentamicin In Neonates On Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation., W. Michael Southgate, Joseph T. Dipiro, Alex F. Robertson Jan 1989

Pharmacokinetics Of Gentamicin In Neonates On Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation., W. Michael Southgate, Joseph T. Dipiro, Alex F. Robertson

Publications from the Office of the Dean

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has been used in more than 1,000 infants in 50 centers in the United States. The extracorporeal circuit contains approximately 400 ml of blood, an amount exceeding the blood volume of most full-term neonates. The effect of this additional blood volume on drug disposition is unknown. In this study, we determined the pharmacokinetic parameters of gentamicin in 10 infants on ECMO. Gentamicin concentrations were determined by a fluorescence polarization immunoassay. Pharmacokinetic parameters were determined from these concentrations by using a two-compartment model. Our study demonstrated a mean steady-state volume of distribution of 0.51 +/- 0.11 liters/kg, …

Structure And Function Of Human Hemoglobin Covalently Labeled With Periodate-Oxidized Adenosine Triphosphate, Michael Kavanaugh, Max F. Perutz, Giulio Fermi, Daniel T. Shih, Richard T. Jones

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Periodate-oxidized adenosine triphosphate (o-ATP), a ribose ring-opened dialdehyde derivative of ATP, reacts specifically with human deoxyhemoglobin to give a single major covalently modified product after reduction with sodium borohydride. This product, designated di-ATP Hb, was isolated using ion-exchange chromatography and shown to have incorporated two molecules of o-ATP/tetramer. Peptide mapping and x-ray crystallography at 2.8-A resolution indicate that a covalent adduct is formed between the ligand and residues Lys-82 EF6 of each beta chain in the organic phosphate-binding site of the molecule. di-ATP Hb exhibits a significantly decreased oxygen affinity (P50 = 20.8 mm Hg versus 5.8 mm Hg control; …
