Report Of The Children's Workgroup Of The Florida Commission On Mental Health And Substance Abuse, Children's Workgroup Of The Florida Commission On Mental Health And Substance Abuse

FMHI Publications

The 1999 Legislature created the Florida Commission on Mental Health and Substance Abuse to study the management, operation, and effectiveness of the existing mental health and substance abuse system in Florida, and to develop recommendations for strengthening the system. The Commission in turn established four workgroups to conduct more in depth examinations of particular issues than it was possible for the entire Commission to do. This serves as the Executive Summary of the report of the Children's Workgroup.

Evidence For A Partially Folded Intermediate In Α-Synuclein Fibril Formation, Vladimir N. Uversky, Jie Li, Anthony L. Fink Jan 2001

Evidence For A Partially Folded Intermediate In Α-Synuclein Fibril Formation, Vladimir N. Uversky, Jie Li, Anthony L. Fink

Molecular Medicine Faculty Publications

Intracellular proteinaceous aggregates (Lewy bodies and Lewy neurites) of α-synuclein are hallmarks of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease, dementia with Lewy bodies, and multiple systemic atrophy. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying α-synuclein aggregation into such filamentous inclusions remain unknown. An intriguing aspect of this problem is that α-synuclein is a natively unfolded protein, with little or no ordered structure under physiological conditions. This raises the question of how an essentially disordered protein is transformed into highly organized fibrils. In the search for an answer to this question, we have investigated the effects of pH and temperature on the structural …

Is Congo Red An Amyloid-Specific Dye?, Ritu Khurana, Vladimir N. Uversky, Liza Nielsen, Anthony L. Fink

Molecular Medicine Faculty Publications

Congo red (CR) binding, monitored by characteristic yellow-green birefringence under crossed polarization has been used as a diagnostic test for the presence of amyloid in tissue sections for several decades. This assay is also widely used for the characterization of in vitro amyloid fibrils. In order to probe the structural specificity of Congo red binding to amyloid fibrils we have used an induced circular dichroism (CD) assay. Amyloid fibrils from insulin and the variable domain of Ig light chain demonstrate induced CD spectra upon binding to Congo red. Surprisingly, the native conformations of insulin and Ig light chain also induced …

Metal-Triggered Structural Transformations, Aggregation, And Fibrillation Of Human Α-Synuclein: A Possible Molecular Link Between Parkinson′S Disease And Heavy Metal Exposure, Vladimir N. Uversky, Jie Li, Anthony L. Fink Jan 2001

Metal-Triggered Structural Transformations, Aggregation, And Fibrillation Of Human Α-Synuclein: A Possible Molecular Link Between Parkinson′S Disease And Heavy Metal Exposure, Vladimir N. Uversky, Jie Li, Anthony L. Fink

Molecular Medicine Faculty Publications

Parkinson's disease involves the aggregation of α-synuclein to form fibrils, which are the major constituent of intracellular protein inclusions (Lewy bodies and Lewy neurites) in dopaminergic neurons of the substantia nigra. Occupational exposure to specific metals, especially manganese, copper, lead, iron, mercury, zinc, aluminum, appears to be a risk factor for Parkinson's disease based on epidemiological studies. Elevated levels of several of these metals have also been reported in the substantia nigra of Parkinson's disease subjects. We examined the effect of various metals on the kinetics of fibrillation of recombinant α-synuclein and in inducing conformational changes, as monitored by biophysical …

Women, Communities, And The Prevention Of Mother-To-Child Transmission Of Hiv: Issues And Findings From Community Research In Botswana And Zambia, Laura Nyblade, Mary Lyn Field-Nguer

HIV and AIDS

This paper discusses research in Botswana and Zambia that showed gaps in community knowledge about HIV transmission, particularly from mother to child, and yielded insights into community perspectives about the barriers to using voluntary counseling and testing services; the stigma and fear associated with HIV; traditional norms on breastfeeding; and the role of family and community members in women’s decisions to participate in programs to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV. A separate Population Council publication (“Community involvement in the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV: Insights and recommendations”) offers recommendations for community involvement strategies that will encourage program planners to …

An Integrated Risk Assessment Tool To Evaluate The Existing Risk Managment System Within A Health Care Facility, Laura F. Breen Jan 2001

An Integrated Risk Assessment Tool To Evaluate The Existing Risk Managment System Within A Health Care Facility, Laura F. Breen

Masters

Risk assessment is a method used to identify risks within an organisation. It is required by the Safety Health and Welfare at Work Act, 189 for the purpose of safety management. No one method can effectively identify all types of hazard and risks within organisations. The insufficiency of individual risk assessment techniques to generate objective data as to the level of risk, is now generally accepted as an issue in risk management. Therefore, a combination of risk assessment techniques, best suited for the organisation, could improve risk assessments. This study set out to develop and combine a number of risk …

Vertical Transmission Of Kaposi's Sarcoma-Associated Herpesvirus, Hamakwa Mantina, Chipepo Kankasa, Winslow Klaskala, Brad Brayfield, James Campbell, Quijiang Du, Ganapati Bhat, Francis Kasolo, Charles Mitchell, Charles Wood Jan 2001

Vertical Transmission Of Kaposi's Sarcoma-Associated Herpesvirus, Hamakwa Mantina, Chipepo Kankasa, Winslow Klaskala, Brad Brayfield, James Campbell, Quijiang Du, Ganapati Bhat, Francis Kasolo, Charles Mitchell, Charles Wood

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Little is presently known about the specific routes of transmission of Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) or human herpesvirus-8 (HHV-8). To investigate whether this agent might be transmitted vertically from mother to infant, we conducted a study on 89 KSHV seropositive mothers and their newborn infants. Thirteen mothers (14.6%) had KSHV DNA detected in their peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). Two of 89 samples drawn at birth from infants born to KSHV seropositive mothers had KSHV DNA detectable within their PBMC. These findings suggest that KSHV can be transmitted perinatally, but infrequently. Other routes of transmission such as horizontal transmission remain …

Submerged And Solid-State Phytase Fermentation By Aspergillus Niger: Effects Of Agitation And Medium Viscosity On Phytase Production, Fungal Morphology And Inoculum Performance, Maria Papagianni, Sue E. Nokes, Keith Filer

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Qualitative relationships between agitation levels and medium viscosity, Aspergillus niger morphology and phytase production were investigated in submerged and solid-state fermentations. Overall phytase production increased with increasing shaker speeds from 150 to 300 rpm, although specific growth rates and phytase production rates were higher at 150 rpm for 72 h from inoculation. Fungal morphology was greatly influenced by agitation with the morphological forms of small pellets and entangled mycelia predominating at 150 rpm, while the free filamentous form was obtained at 300 rpm. Upon inoculation of SSF, increased productivities were obtained from inocula grown at 150 rpm. A shift towards …

Ecuador: Use Commercial Marketing To Increase Sustainability, Frontiers In Reproductive Health

Reproductive Health

Many nongovernmental organizations sell contraceptives through retail outlets to generate income and expand access to these products. In 1998 Centro Médico de Orientación y Planifación Familiar (CEMOPLAF) employed 25 sales agents in 14 cities throughout Ecuador. These agents sold products, including contraceptive methods and home pregnancy tests, to pharmacies, physicians, other distributors, and nontraditional outlets. Contraceptive sales were CEMOPLAF’s largest source of revenue in 1997. Sales had grown rapidly during 1996–97, but CEMOPLAF managers did not know whether product sales were profitable. With support from the Population Council and Family Health International, CEMOPLAF made a detailed analysis of product sales …

An Analysis Of Anemia And Child Mortality, B.J. Brabin, Zul Premji, F. Verhoeff Jan 2001

An Analysis Of Anemia And Child Mortality, B.J. Brabin, Zul Premji, F. Verhoeff

Pathology, East Africa

The relationship of anemia as a risk factor for child mortality was analyzed by using cross-sectional, longitudinal and case-control studies, and randomized trials. Five methods of estimation were adopted: 1) the proportion of child deaths attributable to anemia; 2) the proportion of anemic children who die in hospital studies; 3) the population-attributable risk of child mortality due to anemia; 4) survival analyses of mortality in anemic children; and 5) cause-specific anemia-related child mortality. Most of the data available were hospital based. For children aged 0-5 y the percentage of deaths due to anemia was comparable for reports from highly malarious …

Client Preferences And Acceptability For Medical Abortion And Mva As Early Pregnancy Termination Method In Northwest Ethiopia, Mulatu A. Woldetsadik, Tegbar Y. Sendekie, Mary T. White, Desaleng T. Zegeye

Population and Public Health Sciences Faculty Publications

Background

Increasing access to safe abortion services is the most effective way of preventing the burden of unsafe abortion, which is achieved by increasing safe choices for pregnancy termination. Medical abortion for termination of early abortion is said to safe, effective, and acceptable to women in several countries. In Ethiopia, however, medical methods have, until recently, never been used. For this reason it is important to assess women's preferences and the acceptability of medical abortion and manual vacuum aspiration (MVA) in the early first trimester pregnancy termination and factors affecting acceptability of medical and MVA abortion services.

Methods

A prospective …

Symposium Issue: "Who's Afraid Of Commodification?", Dena S. Davis

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

Unfortunately, a great deal of the talk about "commodification" has been clumsy and sloppy. The term has been used as a magic bullet, as if saying "But that's commodification!" is the same as having made an argument. In fact, commodification of human persons, human bodies, human labor, human relationships, is a complex matter.

Research On Faith And Health: New Appoaches To Old Questions, Thomas G. Plante, Allen C. Sherman

Psychology

Does religious faith influence health? Are religious practices associated with altered risks for morbidity or mortality? Do religious or spiritual individuals tend to enjoy better well-being or mental health across the lifespan? Does spiritual or religious involvement change the way individuals adapt to the demands of chronic illness? This volume brings together some of the leading investigators who have explored these intriguing questions. Though research is in its early phases, the chapters that follow review some of what we have learned and begin to trace the outlines of the many mysteries that remain.

The Role Of Culture In Appraisal, Batja Mesquita, Phoebe C. Ellsworth Jan 2001

The Role Of Culture In Appraisal, Batja Mesquita, Phoebe C. Ellsworth

Book Chapters

During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries travelers to the South Seas brought back stories of a Malaysian emotional syndrom called amok, in which a person rushes around in a state of frenzy, recklessly attacking anyone who gets in the way, and impervious to all attempts at restraint. No Western language had a word that meant the same thing as amok, and Westerners were fascinated by this bizarre phenomenon. Fascinated, but not mystified. Amok was strange, but it was not unrecognizable, and the term "running amok" was quickly incorporated into Western speech to refer to a kind of violent …

Department of Radiation Oncology Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA2 account for approximately 50% of breast cancer families with more than four affected cases, whereas exonic mutations in p53, PTEN, CHK2 and ATM may account for a very small proportion. It was recently reported that an intronic variant of p53--G13964C--occurred in three out of 42 (7.1%) 'hereditary' breast cancer patients, but not in any of 171 'sporadic' breast cancer control individuals (P = 0.0003). If this relatively frequent occurrence of G13964C in familial breast cancer and absence in control individuals were confirmed, then this would suggest that the G13964C variant plays a role in …

Center for Survey Research Publications

The Massachusetts Tobacco Control Program was launched in October of 1993. At that time, the Center for Survey Research conducted the Massachusetts Tobacco Survey (MTS), a comprehensive survey of adults and teens living in Massachusetts. The purpose of the survey was to collect baseline data on the prevalence of tobacco use among adults and teens in the Commonwealth and on issues related to the likelihood of smoking cessation or initiation. The survey also assessed the prevalence of restrictive smoking policies, and attitudes about tobacco control measures. The baseline data serve as a standard against which the impact of various programs …

Cannabinoids And The Immune System, Thomas W. Klein, Catherine A. Newton, Herman Friedman Jan 2001

Cannabinoids And The Immune System, Thomas W. Klein, Catherine A. Newton, Herman Friedman

Molecular Medicine Faculty Publications

The effect of cannabimimetic agents on the function of immune cells such as T and B lymphocytes, natural killer cells and macrophages has been extensively studied over the past several decades using human and animal paradigms involving whole animal models as well as tissue culture systems. From this work, it can be concluded that these drugs have subtle yet complex effects on immune cell function and that some of the drug activity is mediated by cannabinoid receptors expressed on the various immune cell subtypes. However, the overall role of the cannabinoid system of receptors and ligands in human health and …

Stabilization Of Partially Folded Conformation During Α-Synuclein Oligomerization In Both Purified And Cytosolic Preparations, Vladimir N. Uversky, He-Jin Lee, Jie Li, Anthony L. Fink, Seung-Jae Lee Jan 2001

Stabilization Of Partially Folded Conformation During Α-Synuclein Oligomerization In Both Purified And Cytosolic Preparations, Vladimir N. Uversky, He-Jin Lee, Jie Li, Anthony L. Fink, Seung-Jae Lee

Molecular Medicine Faculty Publications

Aggregation of α-synuclein is tightly associated with many neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson's disease, dementia with Lewy body, Lewy body variant of Alzheimer's disease, multiple system atrophy, and Hallervorden-Spatz disease, implicating a crucial role of aggregated forms of α-synuclein in the pathogenesis. Here, we examined the effect of elevated temperature on the oligomerization and structural changes of α-synuclein in the early stage of aggregation and show that self-assembly is crucial for the stabilization of a partially folded conformation. The efficiency of α-synuclein oligomerization increased proportional to the temperature increase, both in purified form and in crude cytosolic preparation. This oligomerization …
