Dedicated Vascular Access Team Benchmark Study, Rachel Davis Dec 2022

Dedicated Vascular Access Team Benchmark Study, Rachel Davis

MSN Capstone Projects

Hospitals see a rise in the critically ill population. These patients present with multiple comorbidities resulting in frequent emergency department trips. Unfortunately, with each visit, these patients require a vascular access device. Over time their veins will no longer be easily accessible. Patients with veins that are no longer visible, palpable, or require special techniques to obtain access are considered to be difficult intravenous access (DIVA) patients. They will likely experience multiple attempts with each admission to the hospital, resulting in physical and emotional pain, not to mention being costly. The purpose of this paper is to compare the advantages …

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends everyone between 13--64 years be tested for HIV at least once as a routine procedure. Routine HIV screening is reimbursable by Medicare, Medicaid, expanded Medicaid, and most commercial insurance plans. Yet, scaling-up HIV routine screening remains a challenge. We conducted a scoping review for studies on financial benefits and barriers associated with HIV screening in clinical settings in the U.S. to inform an evidence-based strategy to scale-up routine HIV screening. We searched Ovid MEDLINE®, Cochrane, and Scopus for studies published between 2006-2020 in English. The search identified 383 Citations; we screened 220 …

Pharmacy Faculty Publications and Presentations

Nanomaterials (NMs) have been increasingly used in a number of areas, including consumer products and nanomedicine. Target tissue dosimetry is important in the evaluation of safety, efficacy, and potential toxicity of NMs. Current evaluation of NM efficacy and safety involves the time-consuming collection of pharmacokinetic and toxicity data in animals and is usually completed one material at a time. This traditional approach no longer meets the demand of the explosive growth of NM-based products. There is an emerging need to develop methods that can help design safe and effective NMs in an efficient manner. In this review article, we critically …

Nurse Efficiency & Ultrasound Guided Intravenous Access: Evidence Based Intervention Benchmark, Jacob D. Frost Dec 2022

Nurse Efficiency & Ultrasound Guided Intravenous Access: Evidence Based Intervention Benchmark, Jacob D. Frost

MSN Capstone Projects

Gaining IV access is this first step into accurate, timely diagnosis and interventions of patients. Nurses are typically the first medical professional a patient sees. If the nurse can establish IV access as early as possible this will lead to faster interventions faster diagnostic results and better management for patients and ultimately better patient outcomes. Ultrasound guided IV can increase first attempt success rates leading to decreased painful IV insertions by multiple nurses. This would increase patient satisfactions scores leading to higher re-imbursement.

METHODS: Macrophages and endothelial cells were transfected with specific siRNAs or infected with adenoviral vectors to alter sphingomyelin levels in the membrane. TF activity was measured in factor X activation assay. Saphenous vein incision-induced bleeding and the inferior vena cava ligation-induced flow restriction mouse models were used to evaluate hemostasis and thrombosis, respectively. RESULTS: Overexpression of SMS …

End-Of-Life Simulation Education, Lucas Farris Nov 2022

End-Of-Life Simulation Education, Lucas Farris

MSN Capstone Projects

In the current healthcare workforce, there exists a lack of comfort and knowledge about providing end-of-life (EOL) care that will only continue to worsen without prompt changes to the delivery of education (Jablonski et al., 2020). The lack of knowledge and comfort expressed in providing EOL care leads to a nurse’s moral and physical difficulty when a patient chooses palliative care or hospice. This is a detriment to patients and should be a consideration for schools of nursing when developing curriculum and clinical activities. By promoting changes in curriculum and the addition of an EOL simulation at the undergraduate level, …

Metalp: An Integrative Linear Programming Method For Protein Inference In Metaproteomics, Shichao Feng, Hong-Long Ji, Huan Wang, Bailu Zhang, Ryan Sterzenbach, Chongle Pan, Xuan Guo

Cellular and Molecular Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Metaproteomics based on high-throughput tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) plays a crucial role in characterizing microbiome functions. The acquired MS/MS data is searched against a protein sequence database to identify peptides, which are then used to infer a list of proteins present in a metaproteome sample. While the problem of protein inference has been well-studied for proteomics of single organisms, it remains a major challenge for metaproteomics of complex microbial communities because of the large number of degenerate peptides shared among homologous proteins in different organisms. This challenge calls for improved discrimination of true protein identifications from false protein identifications given …
