Background: Low-dose rivaroxaban and low-intensity warfarin are widely used in Asia for patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). However, in Asians, it is unclear whether low-dose rivaroxaban and low-intensity warfarin can improve the prognosis of AF. In this study, we investigate the survival benefits of low-dose rivaroxaban and low-intensity warfarin in Asian patients with AF in clinical practice. Methods: This cohort study used medical records in a single tertiary hospital in China, between 2019 and 2020, to identify patients with AF who used rivaroxaban or warfarin, or had no anticoagulant therapy. Follow-ups were performed through telephone contact or medical record review. …

Insufficient blood levels of the neurohormone vitamin D are associated with increased risk of COVID-19 severity and mortality. Despite the global rollout of vaccinations and promising preliminary results, the focus remains on additional preventive measures to manage COVID-19. Results conflict on vitamin D’s plausible role in preventing and treating COVID-19. We examined the relation between vitamin D status and COVID-19 severity and mortality among the multiethnic population of the United Arab Emirates. Our observational study used data for 522 participants who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 at one of the main hospitals in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Only 464 of those …

Major adverse cardiovascular events are closely associated with 24-hour blood pressure (BP). We determined outcome-driven thresholds for 24-hour mean arterial pressure (MAP), a BP index estimated by oscillometric devices. We assessed the association of major adverse cardiovascular events with 24-hour MAP, systolic BP (SBP), and diastolic BP (DBP) in a population-based cohort (n=11 596). Statistics included multivariable Cox regression and the generalized R2 statistic to test model fit. Baseline office and 24-hour MAP averaged 97.4 and 90.4 mm Hg. Over 13.6 years (median), 2034 major adverse cardiovascular events occurred. Twenty-four-hour MAP levels of <90 >(normotension, n=6183), 90 to <92 >(elevated MAP, n=909), …92>90>

Introduction- The Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19) caused by the novel SARS-CoV-2 led to significant strain on the Emergency Department (ED) visits worldwide. Multiple stay-at-home orders were issued during the pandemic unless medical treatment was urgently needed1 . Acute esophageal obstruction (AEO) due to food/ foreign body impaction usually present to the ED, given its severe symptoms. Most esophageal foreign bodies pass through the gastrointestinal (GI) tract uneventfully, and related mortality is very low. Still, most of these patients receive endoscopic interventions (up to 76%)2 . The number of non-urgent endoscopies plummeted sharply during the pandemic to reduce exposure and preserve personal …

Background and purpose: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is associated with a small but clinically significant risk of stroke, the cause of which is frequently cryptogenic. In a large multinational cohort of consecutive COVID-19 patients with stroke, we evaluated clinical predictors of cryptogenic stroke, short-term functional outcomes and inhospital mortality among patients according to stroke etiology.
Methods: We explored clinical characteristics and short-term outcomes of consecutively evaluated patients 18 years of age or older with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) and laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 from 31 hospitals in 4 countries (3/1/20–6/16/20).
Results:Of the 14.483 laboratory-confirmed patients with COVID-19, 156 (1.1%) were diagnosed …
Machine Learning Models For 6-Month Survival Prediction After Surgical Resection Of Glioblastoma, Jeffrey Gray, Lohit Velagapudi, Michael Baldassari, Bryan Sadler, David Vuong
Machine Learning Models For 6-Month Survival Prediction After Surgical Resection Of Glioblastoma, Jeffrey Gray, Lohit Velagapudi, Michael Baldassari, Bryan Sadler, David Vuong
Phase 1
Introduction: The role of surgical resection for the treatment of glioblastoma multiforme is well established. Survival analysis after resective surgery in the literature comprises mostly of traditional statistical models. Machine learning models offer powerful predictive and analytical capability for varied datasets and offer improved generalizability and scalability. We analyzed survival data of patients with glioblastoma with various machine learning algorithms and compared it to binary logistic regression.
Methods: We retrospectively identified cases of glioblastoma treated with surgical resection at our institution from 2012-2018. Feature scaling and one-hot encoding was used to better fit the models to the data and used …
