Contemporary Rural Social Work Journal
ABSTRACT
Objective: This study explored using person-centered scheduling with telepsychiatry for rural community geriatric patients. Quantitative research approaches were used to determine the level of satisfaction participants experienced with person-centered scheduling and geriatric telepsychiatry. Method: Quantitative data were collected by using the Zung Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) before scheduling the first appointment and to assess the intervention’s effectiveness after the telepsychiatry session. Results: Person-centered telepsychiatry scheduling decreased geriatric patients’ anxiety as evidenced by Zung SAS scores. Conclusion: Older adult patients saw telepsychiatry as a viable means of treatment. Future research with geriatrics from different regions is needed.

Improving The Pharmacologic Management Of Patients After Osteoporotic Hip Fractures, Joseph Klaus, Milad Modarresi, Rodrigo Aguilar, Nasreen Benhamed, Franklin D. Shuler
Marshall Journal of Medicine
Abstract
Background
Osteoporotic hip fractures have become an increasingly common healthcare burden with significant morbidity and mortality in the geriatric population. Pharmacological management of the underlying osteoporosis is critical. Our objective is to determine the percentage of patients older than 65 who receive pharmacologic treatment of osteoporosis within six months after a fragility fracture at Cabell Huntington Hospital.
Methods
Data was extracted from medical records for patients age 65 or older who sustained a hip fracture during June 2013 - March 2015. Patients who received any form of pharmacologic treatment within six months after their fractures were identified. All analyses …

Purple Urine Bag Syndrome: An Educational Case Of A Colorful Condition In The Chronically Catheterized, Teshome Gebrmichael, Fikirte Feleke, Waseem Ahmed, Madhulika Urella, Samson Teka
Marshall Journal of Medicine
Purple Urine Bag Syndrome is a rare condition characterized by purple discoloration of the urinary drainage bag. It is typically seen in elderly patients with chronic indwelling urinary catheterization, and is associated with urinary tract infections with high bacterial load, female gender, severe disability, constipation, and alkaline urine. This phenomenon occurs when tryptophan metabolites in the urine are broken down by bacteria containing indoxyl sulphatase and phosphatase enzymes. This results in the production of indigo and indirubin, which combine to give a purple appearance. This article presents a 78-year-old male with chronic urinary retention requiring intermittent Foley catheterization for the …

Case Report: Failure Of Group Therapy With Elderly Russian-Jewish Immigrants (An Exploratory Analysis), Gennady Berezkin M.D.
Case Report: Failure Of Group Therapy With Elderly Russian-Jewish Immigrants (An Exploratory Analysis), Gennady Berezkin M.D.
Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry
This paper is a description of an unsuccessful attempt to carry out group therapy with elderly Russian-Jewish immigrants.
An attempt was made to conduct group therapy following general principals of traditional psychotherapy with geriatric populations.
In the final analysis, we conclude that culturally based preconceptions toward psychotherapy, culturally based stereotypes of interpersonal relationships and culturally-based transference to the therapist were the primary reasons for the development of negative transference and resistance which culminated in the ultimate failure of group psychotherapy with this group of elderly immigrants.
Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus: How Can It Be Told Apart From Neurodegenerative Diseases Of The Elderly?, Raphael C. Zohn
Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus: How Can It Be Told Apart From Neurodegenerative Diseases Of The Elderly?, Raphael C. Zohn
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) affects more of the older population than people recognize. The underestimation of this neurological condition is due in most part to the overlap of its symptoms to other forms of dementia as well as many other geriatric conditions. The objective of this paper was to research and contrast various methods of differentiation in the diagnosis of normal pressure hydrocephalus as well as find pretreatment indicators of successful surgery. Methods included reviewing of articles and studies done to evaluate which symptoms are most commonly presented in normal pressure hydrocephalus and their subtle differences from the symptoms of …

Nursing: A New Day, A New Way, Lin Zhan, Jane Cloutterback
New England Journal of Public Policy
The U.S. health care environment is changing rapidly. Its structure, financing, and delivery are being reconfigured toward an integrated system based on managed care. Increasingly, national interest in health promotion and disease prevention is moving care away from a disease-oriented, institutionally based model to a population-focused, wellness-oriented, and community-based system. Health care consumers are diversifying in age, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. The approach emerging from these changes and others requires nursing to rethink, redesign, and retool its workforce to meet new challenges. This article analyzes nursing education, practice, and operations. The authors discuss the dilemmas and complexity of developing an …

Accidental Hypothermia In Medico-Legal Practice, Keith A. Mant
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
The autopsy findings in 28 cases of fatal hypothermia have been described. Hypothermia, in temperate climates, is one of the complications of longevity. The hypothermic state may be precipitated by a wide range of natural diseases, especially chronic cardiac disease. The classical case of hypothermia may be recognized at post-mortem by the myxoedematous appearance of the patient and the presence of gastric and pancreatic lesions.
The Older Population And The Aged Patient, Ewald W. Busse
The Older Population And The Aged Patient, Ewald W. Busse
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
Modern medical practice requires that the physician and other members of the health team have full appreciation of the impact of disease and disability upon identifiable groups of patients and recognize how nonmedical factors affect treatment and prognosis. It is important for the physician to have some idea of the patient's socioeconomic status and the actual and potential number of patients with not only a common diagnosis, but also similarities in their living conditions. With such knowledge, the physician can be much more realistic and efficient in his therapeutic efforts. Persons 65 years of age and over are commonly referred …
