Studies on metformin have shown various impacts on cognitive decline in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, whereas sulfonylurea has been shown to reduce this impact. This study aimed to compare the impacts of metformin and metformin-sulfonylurea on cognitive function and determine what factors affected it. This cross-sectional study was conducted at Pasar Minggu Primary Health Care involving 142 type 2 diabetes mellitus patients taking metformin or metformin-sulfonylurea for > 6 months and aged > 36 years. Cognitive function was assessed using the …

Menoufia Medical Journal

Objectives To study the prognostic value of coronary computed tomography (CT) angiography in asymptomatic diabetic patients. Background Diabetic patients have a higher prevalence of coronary artery disease (CAD) and are more likely to have silent myocardial ischemia and myocardial infarction than nondiabetics and are characterized by multivessel disease and calcified, diffuse, and distal lesions. CT coronary angiography is a safe, accurate, and reliable technique of high ability to detect CAD and estimate the degree of obstruction, number of affected arteries, and the pattern of their affection and a reliable modality for exclusion of CAD. Patients and methods This study was …

Menoufia Medical Journal

Background At present, there is really no unique biomarker for detecting diabetes-related vascular complications. As a result, it is critical to investigate specific biomarkers for diagnosing, detecting, and catching the early stages of disease progression. Objectives To analyze the relationship of long noncoding RNA in patients with asymptomatic atherosclerotic diabetic. Patients and methods This case–control study included 312 participants recruited from Menoufia University Hospitals' Internal Medicine Outpatient Clinics and Inpatient Departments and divided into two groups: group I was the diabetic with subclinical atherosclerosis group, which included 176 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, with the carotid intima-media thickness assessed …

Background Individual predisposition to obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is determined by the interaction between genetic and environmental factors. The fat mass and obesity-associated gene (FTO) is an obesity-susceptibility gene identified to have a huge effect on obesity and DM in different populations. Objectives To investigate the association between FTO gene polymorphisms rs9939609 and rs17817449 and prediction of T2DM in Egyptian obese patients. Patients and methods In this case–control study, PCR–restriction fragment length polymorphism was used for investigating allele and genotype frequencies of FTO rs9939609 and rs17817449 in 90 participants divided into two groups: diabetic group …

Indicators Of Cardiac Autonomic Dysfunction Associated With Chronic Hyperglycemia: Implications On Vascular Surrogates And Heart Failure, Yap-Hang Chan, Bernard Man-Yung Cheung, Hung-Fat Tse

Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology

Background: Limited data exist on the role of chronic hyperglycemia-related cardiac autonomic dysfunction in incident heart failure (HF). We investigated the relations of resting heart rate (HR) and PR interval with chronic hyperglycemia, and effects on new-onset HF.

Methods: We prospectively studied 550 patients with prior coronary disease, ischemic stroke and/ or type 2 diabetes. Incident HF was ascertained. Heart rate-PR interval dissociation was defined as counter-physiological co-occurrence of increased PR interval (>mean; 173.3ms) and increased resting HR (>mean; 64.4 beats/min).

Results: Over 63 ±11 months, 6.7% patients developed new-onset HF. Resting HR³75bpm was independently predictive of new-onset …

The aim of this study were to assess the association of medication adherence to HbA1c levels and compare two methods of adherence measurements. This research was conducted at Pasar Minggu Public Health Center, Jakarta using a cross-sectional design. The adherence assessment was conducted using …

Objective: To investigate hemodynamic and left ventricular diastolic that responses to a dynamic handgrip exercise (DHE) in DM patients. Methods: 12 controls and 12 DM patients were recruited and evaluated for hemodynamic and diastolic functions at rest and 3 minutes after performing DHE. Results: DHE increased systolic blood …

Menoufia Medical Journal

Objective To compare surgical outcomes of abdominal hysterectomy (AH) versus total laparoscopic hysterectomy (TLH) in diabetic patients. Background Diabetes mellitus is considered a multisytemic disease affecting mainly the small vessels (diabetic vasculopathy). Diabetes mellitus and comorbidities associated with it are well-known factors that negatively affect surgical outcomes. Hysterectomy is one of the most frequent gynecological surgical procedure, having different routes, either abdominal, vaginal, or laparoscopic. AH is correlated to more complications such as wound infection and longer postoperative hospital stay in diabetic patients. However, TLH may be particularly well suited to diabetic women as they can avoid the postoperative complications …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Epidemiological evidence suggests that diabetes poses a high risk for many chronic diseases, especially cardiovascular diseases, and cancer by stimulating many inflammatory and immunological pathogenic mediators and affecting natural killer (NK)-cell activity. In this study, the effects of melatonin and resveratrol on IL-6, TNF-alpha, oxidant/antioxidant capacity, NK-cell activity, and mid-regional proadrenomedullin (MR-proADM) levels of diabetic rats were investigated. Materials and methods: In the study, 28 Sprague Dawley rats were randomly divided into the control group (group I) and 3 streptozotocin- induced diabetes mellitus (DM) groups (group II, III, and IV), each group consisting of 7 rats. Five mg/kg/day melatonin …
