Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: About half of the cases of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) occurring in childhood/adolescence occur with similar symptoms both in childhood and adulthood. Immunologic stress is claimed to be a risk factor in the etiology of childhood onset OCD. Our aim was to elucidate the relationship between childhood onset OCD risk and MHC complex I and II alleles. Materials and methods: MHC alleles of 49 OCD children together with 277 healthy children (aged 4-12) were analyzed by PCR. Results were evaluated by using univariate analysis and multivariate logistic regression analysis. Results: A2, A29, C4, DRB3.1, and DRB1*16 alleles were found to …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the healing effects of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMMSCs) on experimental testicular torsion in rats. Materials and methods: Three groups consisting of 10 Wistar albino rats were created. In Group I, the left testicle was explored and relocated in the scrotum without any attempt to modify it. In Group II, the left testicle underwent torsion for three h and then was detorsed and relocated. In Group III, in addition to torsion and detorsion, BM-MSCs were administered intratesticularly. The rats were sacrificed on the seventh day, and the healing status of …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: This study was designed to compare the outcomes of mini-percutaneous cystolithotomy (mPCL) and transurethral cystolithotripsy (TUCL) in treating bladder stones in preschool-aged children (≤6 years old). Materials and methods: Twenty-four patients treated with mPCL and 28 patients treated with TUCL for bladder stones were compared retrospectively. The operative and postoperative outcomes of both groups were analyzed. Results: The mean age and gender distribution were similar between the groups. The mean stone size was 16.5 ± 0.5 mm for the mPCL group and 14.9 ± 5.7 mm for the TUCL group (p = 0.318). The mean operative time was 41.1 …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) monitoring demonstrates renal blood flow, perfusion, and oxygenation changes. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of pediatric endourological interventions (PEI) on regional oxygen saturation value (rSO2 ) using renal NIRS monitoring. Materials and methods: Patients having bilateral inguinal surgery (group I), cystoscopy (group II), and ureterorenoscopy (group III), 20 patients in each group, were included in the study. NIRS values before induction (T0) and at 5 min (T5), 10 min (T10), 15 min (T15), 20 min (T20), 25 min (T25), 30 min (T30) of the surgical procedure, and at the postextubation (Tend) were determined. The …
