An Unexpected Case Of Herpes Simplex Virus Esophagitis Presenting Amidst Corticosteroid Therapy For An Acute Copd Exacerbation: A Case Report, Aqeel Khanani, Kayvan Mirhadi

Advances in Clinical Medical Research and Healthcare Delivery

Herpes simplex virus (HSV) is prevalent worldwide, with a recent report by the World Health Organization estimating that 3.7 billion individuals under the age of 50 have been infected by the virus. After the initial infection, HSV-1 enters a latent phase with the potential for intermittent reactivation, often secondary to episodes of infection, stress, or immunosuppression. Per current literature review, esophageal involvement in the form of herpes simplex virus esophagitis (HSVE) is more commonly associated with immunocompromised patients, such as transplant recipients and HIV-positive individuals. The patient discussed in this report is a 79-year-old female with a past medical history …

Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity

Background: Asthma and COPD are common diseases of the respiratory system. An important element in the medical treatment of these patients is physiotherapy, focused on the reduction of symptoms and improvement of quality of life. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the response of patients with asthma and COPD on a three-week sanatorium rehabilitation in terms of exercise capacity and perception of health. Material/Methods: COPD group (n = 17; age 52 ±3 years); asthma group (n = 20; age 55 ±5 years). During the three-week rehabilitation, patients used breathing and group exercises, inhalation, magnetic therapy, crenotherapy, Sollux …

Journal of Community Hospital Internal Medicine Perspectives

Background: Pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) has multiple benefits in COPD patient. There are multiple barriers to utilize PR including lack of knowledge about the benefits of PR by providers. Objective: We are conducting a Quality Improvement project to improve the referral rate of patients hospitalized for acute exacerbation of COPD to PR. Methods: All patients admitted with a primary diagnosis of acute exacerbation of COPD requiring systemic steroids to Rochester General Hospital in the period between 7/1/2019 and 7/31/2019 were reviewed retrospectively. Between 7/15/2020 and 11/15/2020, we started a PR stewardship program, where we daily review patients hospitalized with acute COPD …

Examination Of Diaphragm Thickness, Mobility And Thickening Fraction In Individuals With Copd Of Different Severity, Ceyhun Topcuoğlu, Eylem Tütün Yümi̇n, Mustafa Hizal, Suat Konuk

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Diaphragm thickness and mobility assessed by ultrasound in individuals with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) reflect the function of the diaphragm. The aim of this study is to compare the diaphragm thickness, mobility, and thickening fraction in individuals with COPD of different severity and healthy individuals and examine the relationship between these parameters and pulmonary function test parameters. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional observational study design was used. Thirty individuals (mild = 11; moderate = 13; severe = 6) with COPD and 29 healthy male individuals aged between 40-75 years were included in the study. The individuals included in …

Background/aim: While mortality rates decrease in many chronic diseases, it continues to increase in COPD. This situation has led to the need to develop new approaches such as phenotypes in the management of COPD. We aimed to investigate the distribution, characteristics and treatment preference of COPD phenotypes in Turkey. Materials and methods: The study was designed as a national, multicenter, observational and cross-sectional. A total of 1141 stable COPD patients were included in the analysis. Results: The phenotype distribution was as follows: 55.7% nonexacerbators (NON-AE), 25.6% frequent exacerbators without chronic bronchitis (AE NON-CB), 13.9% frequent exacerbators with chronic bronchitis (AE-CB), …
