Purpose. The purpose of the study is (1) to describe the selection process of an international clinical guideline (CGL) for patients with low back pain (LBP) for adoption and implementation at the Physical Therapy Department at the American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC), and (2) to evaluate the physiotherapists’ compliance. Method. International guidelines were identified through a literature search and compared according to the AGREE instrument for selection. Quality indicators were selected. Physiotherapists were educated about guidelines’ benefits and the content of the adopted guidelines during interactive sessions; patients’ files were optimized and audited in order to evaluate compliance. …

Effect Of Six Weeks Cycle Ergometry On Selected Gait Parameters Of Stroke Survivors, Ayodele Teslim Onigbinde, Moruf Kolawole Mustapha Jul 2010

Effect Of Six Weeks Cycle Ergometry On Selected Gait Parameters Of Stroke Survivors, Ayodele Teslim Onigbinde, Moruf Kolawole Mustapha

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Purpose: Restoration of gait in stroke survivors is a major goal in rehabilitation. Recently, treadmill training has been introduced as a measure to improve the post stroke gait pattern, but there is still limited data on the use of the cycle ergometer. The primary aim was to compare selected gait parameters of hemiplegics subjects who received cycle ergometry and those who had traditional physiotherapy. Method: A total of twenty-four (24) subjects were alternately allocated to 2 groups, but only 20 completed the experimental procedure. The two groups received baseline traditional physiotherapy while the experimental group used a cycle ergometer as …

Range Of Active Hip Motion In Low Back Pain Patients And Apparently Healthy Controls, Babatunde O. A. Adegoke, O. A. Fapojuwo Jul 2010

Range Of Active Hip Motion In Low Back Pain Patients And Apparently Healthy Controls, Babatunde O. A. Adegoke, O. A. Fapojuwo

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Purpose: Findings from previous studies on hip mobility in individuals with low back pain (LBP) have been equivocal and focused almost exclusively on hip rotation. This study compared active range of hip motion and classified its asymmetry in male subjects with and without LBP. Method: The ex-post facto study involved 30 male patients with LBP and 30 age and sex-matched controls. Active ranges of motion (AROM) of both hip joints of subjects in both groups were measured with a universal goniometer and grouped into different pattern categories based on the presence or absence of a difference of 10° or more …

A Review Of Sports Injury Data Collection Literature And Recommendations For Future Research, Stephen Bailey, Ebonie Scase, Michael Heynen, Mary E. Magarey

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Purpose: There is significant cost associated with sports injury. Establishing injury profiles in contact sports like Australian Rules Football (ARF) will facilitate implementation of injury prevention strategies. The purpose of this literature review was to investigate sports injury data collection methodology, assess the strengths and limitations of previous research and identify gaps in the relevant literature. Recommendations for methodology of future sports injury data collection studies are made, particularly with reference to junior ARF. Method: A non-systematic literature search was undertaken in a narrative fashion to determine past and current injury surveillance in Australian Rules Football (ARF), Soccer, Rugby league …

Pressure ulcers heal slowly and this often results in prolonged hospitalization. Wound infection delays healing in decubitus ulcers and standard treatment include wound dressing and use of antibiotics. However, there is increasing resistance of bacteria to antibiotics. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of ultraviolet radiation (UVB) on the healing of decubitus ulcers. The study was also designed to learn the effect of UVR (Type B) on bacteria. Methods: Ten subjects with ascertained bilateral pressure sores (6 at the gluteal region and 4 at the heels) on the left lower extremities were recruited for this study. …

Single Shot “3-In-1” Femoral Nerve Blockade With 0.25% Or 0.375% Levobupivacaine Provides Similar Postoperative Analgesia For Total Knee Replacement, Alpaslan Apan, Fi̇li̇z Sari, Alp Burak Ekmekçi̇

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

To compare postoperative analgesia provided by single shot "3-in-1" femoral nerve blockade using 0.25% or 0.375% levobupivacaine in preceding with spinal anesthesia for unilateral total knee replacement surgery. Materials and methods: Forty consenting patients undergoing unilateral total knee arthroplasty were included in this prospective randomized study. Spinal anesthesia was achieved with 15 mg plain bupivacaine at the L3-4 or L4-5 interspace. After resolution of the spinal anesthesia, patients were randomized into 2 groups: "3-in-1" femoral nerve blocks were performed using 30 mL of 0.25% levobupivacaine (Group 1, n = 20) or 0.375% levobupivacaine (Group 2, n = 20). Pain was …

Emergency Department Physical Therapist Service: A Pilot Study Examining Physician Perceptions, Michele T. Lebec, Steven Cernohous, Lisa Tenbarge, Colleen Gest, Kristen Severson, Sharon Howard

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Though physical therapist consultation has been described as a means of enhancing care in the Emergency Department (ED), such services are rare and often poorly understood. This pilot study utilizes qualitative methodology for the purpose of describing how one group of emergency physicians experienced with physical therapist consultation in the ED perceive these services and the challenges associated with their provision. Transcripts of interviews with 11 emergency physicians were analyzed for recurrent themes. Findings indicated that these physicians found ED physical therapist services to be of value for themselves, their patients, and the department as a whole and described specific …
