Stealing What's Free: Exploring Compensation To Body Parts Sources For Their Contribution To Profitable Biomedical Research, Jo-Anne Yau

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] “At first blush, donating body parts in the name of science appears to be a beautiful solution to the problem of scarce body parts for research advancements. But a closer investigation reveals an ugly fact: the philanthropic donors—referred to as “Sources” in this article—are subjected to physical and financial exploitation.

Sources play a crucial and indispensable role in biotechnology. Without human body parts, most medical discoveries would not have been possible. Handsome profits can be derived from successful discoveries. But currently in the United States, when a Source provides body parts for research purposes, the researcher, research foundation, and …

Rapid Isolation Of Dna From The Mucus Of Asian Arowana (Scleropages Formosus, Osteoglossidae), Nantarika Chansue

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Owing to arowana being listed in CITES, DNA diagnostics should not rely on conventional methods of obtaining tissue samples. A non-invasive method of obtaining material containing DNA has been developed. Mucus samples for DNA isolation can be obtained by cotton swabbing the arowana body surface with subsequent purification of DNA fragments by using phenol/chloroform. DNA sample quality is assessed by UV absorbancy at wave lengths of 260 nm and 280 nm, as well as by calculating the absorbancy ratio involving 260 nm/280 nm results in order to determine DNA sample quality and quantity. Electrophoresis is employed to assess DNA quantity …

Nineteenth Century Review Of Mental Health Care For African Americans: A Legacy Of Service And Policy Barriers, Tony B. Lowe Dec 2006

Nineteenth Century Review Of Mental Health Care For African Americans: A Legacy Of Service And Policy Barriers, Tony B. Lowe

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The need to focus on service and policy barriers to mental health service delivery for African Americans remains critical. The purpose of this article is to review nineteenth century care as a method for understanding contemporary service and policy barriers. A case study strategy is used to compare the efforts of Pennsylvania and South Carolina using primary and secondary sources to document these developments through a political economy perspective. These findings suggest that the prevailing social, political and economic realities have created mental health disparities along racial lines. Existing barriers are likely rooted in this same reality.

Fairness Issues In Law And Mental Health: Directions For Future Social Work Research, Jose B. Ashford, Jane Holschuh Dec 2006

Fairness Issues In Law And Mental Health: Directions For Future Social Work Research, Jose B. Ashford, Jane Holschuh

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Concepts from the procedural justice literature in social psychology are examined that offer useful guidance for social work researchers with interests in investigating informal adjudications, speciality treatment courts, and other areas of the administrative process previously neglected in mental health services research. These theoretical concepts are offered as an alternative to the therapeutic jurisprudence framework being adopted by some social workers in the field of law and mental health. The issues outlined in this paper also draw on the health services and psychotherapy literature to highlight issues involving process and procedure as social justice and their significance for advancing a …

Culex Tritaeniorhynchus Is Unlikely To Be A Vector For The Porcine Reproductive And Respiratory Syndrome Virus (Prrsv), Kidsadagon Pringproa, Sudchit Chungpivat, Rapee Panyathong, Roongroje Thanawongnuwech

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

At least, 4 mosquito species, Culex tritaeniorhynchus, Culex gelidus, Anopheles vagus and Mansonia uniformis were identified on a pig farm in Nakorn Pathom, Thailand between March 2004 to February 2005. C. tritaeniorhynchus was found to be the predominant species (88.387.63%). To determine whether C. tritaeniorhynchus could serve as a mechanical vector for PRRSV transmission, 2 experiments were conducted on: the duration of PRRSV within the mosquitoes and PRRSV transmission from the PRRSV-infected pigs to naive pigs by the infected mosquitoes. PRRSV nucleic acid could be detected in the whole pooled mosquito samples for up to 48 hours post feeding in …

Morphological Changes In The Oviduct Of Culling Replacement Gilts, Paisan Tienthai, Kriengyot Sajjarengpong, Padet Talummuk

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The aim of this study was to investigate the morphological changes of the oviduct from 30 culling replacement gilts and 6 control sows. Blood samples and female genital organs were taken immediately after slaughter. Post-mortem examinations were made on the genital organs and oviductal samples, i.e. utero-tubal junction (UTJ), isthmus and ampulla, were collected and fixed for histological analysis. Observations indicated that the reasons for culling the gilts were 'no estrus' (68%) and 'repeat breeding' (32%). The greatest pathological changes (67%) were found in repeat breeding gilts, whereas 52% of no estrous gilts were at prepubertal phase. The female hormonal …

New Award: Carah And Germantown's Center In The Park Awarded $2.2 Million To Study Mental Health Of Older African-American Adults

Why do older African-Americans tend to report less depression than Whites although they have poorer health and higher rates of chronic illness?

Research from the past 15 years consistently shows health disparities between Whites and minorities in the United States. African-Americans, in particular, are at higher risk than Caucasians for serious health conditions such as stroke, diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease and mild cognitive impairment. These chronic conditions typically contribute to depression in elders as a whole. However, the rates of depression for African-Americans are unclear with many studies reporting lower depression than in Whites and others reporting the reverse.

Congratulations to the Center and its Director, Dr. Laura Gitlin, on the inaugural issue of CARAH’s newsletter. In our discussions of the development of CARAH, one of the principal goals of the Center is its educational mission as is clear from the other information contained in this publication. Committed as the Center’s research professionals are to improving the health and quality of life of our seniors, it is not enough to conduct research that has the potential to provide significant help and support for patients and their caregivers. Those findings must also be disseminated, must be translated into action, must …

Welcome to the first issue of CenterPieces, the newsletter of the Center for Applied Research on Aging and Health.

Aging is a highly personal phenomenon. It obviously affects each of us on an individual, familia, and socio-political-economic level. Only a short 50 years ago, aging was viewed as a disease rather than a natural and important stage of human development. Although older people are at increased risk for heart disease, cancer, stroke, falls and cognitive impairments, more so than any other age group, new scientific breakthroughs show that frailty and physical and cognitive decline is a complex phenomenon and not …
