Development And Validation Of A Predictive Model For Childhood Mortality After A Traumatic Brain Injury: Analysis Of The National Trauma Data Bank, Jooby Joy, Axel Moreira, Kevin Chorath, Karthik Rajasekaran, Alvaro Moreira
Research Colloquium
Introduction: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in children. While most TBI-related admissions are mild, identifying early predictors of poor outcome may assist clinicians with timely medical decisions and effective triage utilization.
Objective: We sought to develop and validate a clinical tool for predicting in-hospital death in children after a traumatic brain injury.
Methods: Data was collected for children (≤18 years) from the National Trauma Data Bank between the years of 2007 to 2015. We included children who sustained any TBI, defined as: (i) open and closed skull fractures, (ii) cerebellar, cortical, or brain …
Long-Term Survival After Stage Iiib Gallbladder Adenocarcinoma, Shiv Govindji, Rohan Jeyarajah, Shankar Logarajah
Long-Term Survival After Stage Iiib Gallbladder Adenocarcinoma, Shiv Govindji, Rohan Jeyarajah, Shankar Logarajah
Research Colloquium
Patients with gallbladder adenocarcinomas are rare but present with low five-year survival rates. However, there are patients that survive long after their diagnosis with late-stage gallbladder cancer. The objective of this clinical case report is to highlight factors which may have contributed to this patient’s current 15-year survival to provide further insight on the prognosis of aggressive gallbladder adenocarcinomas.
A 43-year-old woman presented to the clinic with back pain. She had an ultrasound which showed dilated bile ducts and a filling defect with endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography. A gall bladder mass was found and biopsied. Biopsy concluded the mass to be …
An Unusual Ed Case: Spontaneous Necrotizing Fasciitis Presenting As Hypoxic Pneumonia, Chetna Thawani, Kishan Patel
An Unusual Ed Case: Spontaneous Necrotizing Fasciitis Presenting As Hypoxic Pneumonia, Chetna Thawani, Kishan Patel
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
We present a case of necrotizing fasciitis initially presenting as septic hypoxic pneumonia, and discuss imaging modalities and diagnostic evaluation. Necrotizing soft tissue infection (NSTI) is a rapidly progressive surgical emergency with a mortality rate of 30%. In approximately 80% of cases, it is introduced through a break in the skin. It can also occur after any invasive procedure or surgery. It is most commonly associated with skin flora including staph and strep, though polymicrobial infections are most common. It usually presents with signs of systemic infection, including fever, chills, sepsis, altered mental status - and signs of cutaneous involvement …
Helicopter Ems And Its Outcomes In Stroke Patients During Transport From Rural Ed To Comprehensive Stroke Center, Asim Shafique, Jillian Baker
Helicopter Ems And Its Outcomes In Stroke Patients During Transport From Rural Ed To Comprehensive Stroke Center, Asim Shafique, Jillian Baker
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
The theory that will be examined in this review pertains to creating an algorithm based upon whether patients suffering from a stroke with a large vessel occlusion should be taken to a stroke center from rural emergency departments for a mechanical thrombectomy via helicopter EMS (HEMS) or ambulance transport. Such an algorithm does not exist in healthcare, so this literature review will have the potential to be clinically applicable. This review will aim to identify the proper method of transportation during an ischemic stroke with the goal of reducing mortality rates and improving outcomes. Most rural communities are over an …
Colorectal Cancer In Patients Under Age 50: Staging And Mortality At A Single Institution, Jaclyn Malat, Sarah Martin, Adrian Ong, Michael Brown
Colorectal Cancer In Patients Under Age 50: Staging And Mortality At A Single Institution, Jaclyn Malat, Sarah Martin, Adrian Ong, Michael Brown
Research Day
Objective: The aim of this study is to compare stage and mortality in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients above and below age 50. We hypothesize that patients under age 50 will be diagnosed at a higher stage and have a lower mortality rate. Reports show an increase in CRC diagnoses in younger patients, however, data on this patient population is limited and further investigation is required.
Methods: A 20-year review of electronic medical records was completed from 1997 to 2017 of all patients diagnosed with CRC. This data was aggregated and univariate analysis was performed.
Results: Of the …
