Intraoperative Hypotension And Acute Kidney Injury In Non-Cardiac Surgery At Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center, Elizabeth Davison, Amanda Affleck, Kenn B Daratha
Books, Presentations, Posters, Etc.
Background Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a serious postoperative complication that increases a patient’s risk for both long and short-term morbidity and mortality.1 Intraoperative hypotension (IOH) is an independent risk factor for AKI,2-5 which can be readily modified by anesthesia providers. This project aims to describe the risk factors and rates of AKI following IOH at various absolute mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) thresholds for specified durations of time among adults undergoing non-cardiac surgery at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center (PSHMC).
Methods PSHMC approved this retrospective, observational evidence-based project and deemed the project exempt by the Institutional Review …

Correlation Of Ondansetron Timing In Postoperative Nausea And Vomiting: A Retrospective Evaluation Amongst Adult Patients Receiving General Anesthesia, Jeff Tanguay, Braden Hemingway, Kenn B Daratha
Books, Presentations, Posters, Etc.
Background Addressed as a national quality initiative by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is a vexing complication requiring further attention by anesthesia providers.3 Medication optimization is an area of focus to address this complication.4 Ondansetron, a selective 5- hydroxytryptophan subtype 3 (5-HT3 ) receptor antagonist, is effective and considered the “gold standard” in the prevention of PONV.4 GlaxoSmithKline™ suggests administering Zofran® (ondansetron) before the induction of anesthesia.5 These directions are in contrast to the synthesis of the research evidence, which supports increased effectiveness of ondansetron when administered 30 minutes before emergence from …

Intraoperative Dexmedetomidine Use On Adult Surgical Patients At Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center, Christina Rose, Scot Pettey, Norel Smith, Kenn B Daratha
Books, Presentations, Posters, Etc.
Background Opioids are considered the standard of practice for intraoperative and postoperative pain management but yield unfavorable outcomes.6 The research evidence demonstrates reductions in post-operative opioid use following intraoperative administration of dexmedetomidine.1,3,4,5,6 Due to the prospective nature of literature surrounding dexmedetomidine, the rate of implementation remains largely unknown. The aim of this retrospective, observational project was to identify the rate of adoption of intraoperative dexmedetomidine administration among adult surgical patients at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center (PSHMC) from January 1, 2015 to December 31, 2019. Accordingly, investigation into dexmedetomidine administration at PSHMC may shed light on this strategy aimed to …

Who Will Care For The Early Care And Education Workforce? Covid-19 And The Need To Support Early Childhood Educators’ Emotional Well-Being, Mark Nagasawa, Kate Tarrant
Straus Institute for Thriving Children & Families
This brief report describes issues and opportunities related to early childhood educators' emotional well-being that emerged from a survey exploring how the COVID-19 was affecting early educators across New York City and New York State (n=3355). Among our key findings were: (1) that mental health support was the most frequently identified need (n=910); (2) professional mental health was the least reported approach to coping (n=216); and (3) how those teaching and caring remotely were approximately one-and-a- half times more likely to rate their emotional well-being as lower than those whose sites were closed (CI 95% 1.157, 1.896). We argue, given …

Pharmacy Practice Faculty Posters
The educational literature is replete with data suggesting the positive impact of wellness behaviors on student success in the 21st century. Pharmacy graduates with a background in wellness and integrative/complimentary medicine will become increasingly important as we expand our understanding of the role social determinants, such as emotional and cognitive influences, have on health. The University of New England College of Pharmacy has adopted both a curricular and co-curricular approach to wellness. We have established a specialty track in Wellness and Integrative Medicine [SS1] that will prepare students, through both didactic and experiential coursework, to employ evidence-based treatments that enhance …
Comparison Of Sars-Cov-2 To Sars-Cov, Mers, And Influenza A: A Systematic Review, Debbie Calabrese
Comparison Of Sars-Cov-2 To Sars-Cov, Mers, And Influenza A: A Systematic Review, Debbie Calabrese
Health Informatics Student Papers and Projects
Differences and similarities are examined among SARS-CoV-2, SARS-CoV-1, MERS and influenza A, in the context of transmissibility. Characteristics specific to the respective pathogens prove invaluable as they set the stage for intervention and management. SARS-CoV-2 bears similarities to other recently emerged infectious diseases in basic virologic ways, yet is distinctly different in terms of viral transmission dynamics. These differences arise from genomic qualities and properties specific to the virus. As ACE2 receptors are determinants for attachment and spread of the virus, and their role throughout tissues in the body is vast, an understanding of organ-level pathogenesis of SARS-CoV-2 is crucial …

Thinking Outside The Box In Liver Tox, Kimberly Brizell, Geoffrey L. Goldsberry
West Florida Division GME Research Day 2020
DILI is the most common cause of acute liver failure in the United States. However, it is important to consider that the agent at play may not be common to the United States. We aim to highlight the importance of using a "global mindset" when treating international and frequent traveling patients, but also demonstrate the severe hepatotoxic risks associated with Nimesulide.

West Florida Division GME Research Day 2020
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an immune mediated inflammatory diseases of the central nervous system characterized by focal ovoid like lesions of demyelination seen on MRI(1,2). The etiology of MS is unknown, however inflammation followed by CNS demyelination and axonal degeneration are known to be part of the pathologic processes that lead to the disease (1). The mean age of onset of MS is 28-31 years old and tends to affect women more often then men with a ratio of 2.3:1 (3,4) . Other risk factors associated with MS include vitamin D deficiency, smoking, and certain viruses (5). The pattern of …

West Florida Division GME Research Day 2020
- Scleroderma and systemic sclerosis are autoimmune phenomena that can cause progressive and permanent damage to the organs of the human body.
- They can cause fibrosis of various internal organs, including the kidneys, lungs, GI tract, and heart
- Rarely, the only manifestation of systemic sclerosis is severe hypertension with renal failure, a subset known as systemic sclerosis sine scleroderma.

A Rare Case Of Leprosy In West Florida, Adrian Lugo, Taylor Studsrud, Nemer Dabage, James Demaio
West Florida Division GME Research Day 2020
- Leprosy is caused by acid-fast bacilli of the M. leprae complex, which includes M. leprae and M. lepromatosis.
- Transmission in the U.S. is rare, but has been documented in hunters who handle wild ninebanded armadillo.
- The origins of M. leprae infection among armadillos, the geographic range of the infected animals, and the potential risks infected armadillos present to people have been topics of concern.
- The infection originated amongst armadillos decades before they were ever used in leprosy research, and numerous surveys have confirmed that armadillos in the southern United States are a large natural reservoir for M. leprae; its prevalence …
