INTRODUCTION: Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) is an ever-evolving technical landscape that requires an advanced level of education. At our institution, a 367-bed pediatric teaching and research facility, learners include registered nurses, registered respiratory therapists, advanced practice registered nurses, resident physicians, pediatric and neonatal intensive care physicians. A certification class followed by an advanced course covers ECMO diagnoses, complications, equipment, and management prior to providing care for ECMO patients in our institution. Educational strategies include high and low fidelity simulations, didactic learning, and clinical hours at the bedside. A desire to increase the experiential learning opportunities was identified as an ECMO …

Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery Posters

Objectives: Currently, limited data examines the safety of utilizing fat transfers in the setting of malignant parotid disease. Here we evaluate the safety of fat graft reconstruction of parotidectomy defects in the setting of malignant disease.

Study Design: Retrospective cohort study

Methods: Electronic chart review of patients who underwent parotidectomy from 2012-2020 were reviewed.

Results: Three hundred and sixty-one patients were identified at a single institution who underwent parotidectomy, and 113 (31.3%) were for malignancy. One hundred and thirty-two patients underwent fat graft reconstruction (49.2%, n=65 for umbilical, 50.8%, n=67 for dermal). One-third of patients had malignant pathology (34.8%, n=46). …

Intraoperative Evaluation Of Nasal Valve Repair Interventions: A Prospective Analysis, Kurren Gill, Md, S. Hamad Sagheer, Bs, Cory Bovenzi, Md, Brian Yan, Ba, Howard Krein, Md, Phd, Ryan Heffelfinger, Md

Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery Posters

Objectives: To allow for early identification and treatment of inadequate nasal valve repair interventions in the intraoperative setting, based on degree of nasal valve collapse quantified by suction-assisted pressure readings. Patient outcomes were measured by comparison of pre- and post-operative Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation (NOSE) surveys.

Study Design: Prospective study.

Methods: All enrolled patients undergo suction-assisted evaluation of nasal valve collapse before surgical intervention. Patients randomized into the experimental group underwent repeat assessment after various nasal valve interventions, compared to a control group where adequacy of interventions was assessed by palpation of the nasal ala.

Results: 20 patients who underwent …

Remote Teaching Of Research Methods, Manoj Sharma

UNLV Best Teaching Practices Expo

Research Methods (PBH 360-1002) offered by the School of Public Health was taught remotely by Manoj Sharma to undergraduate students (primarily from public health) in Fall 2020. The specific teaching techniques that were used in teaching this course were delivery as remote learning, organizing the entire course in Canvas and making it available from day 1, recording all lectures beforehand in Panopto, utilizing cases studies, employing WebEx and its breakout sessions, and having skill-building activities in each module that were sequential. In this course, the fourth-generation multi-theory model (MTM) of health behavior change was utilized from a pedagogical perspective to …

Utilizing Plastinated Head And Neck Dissections For Doctorate Of Dental Medicine (Dmd) Anatomy Laboratories : Observations From The Den 7109 “Guinea Pig” Course, Jessica Immonen

UNLV Best Teaching Practices Expo

This poster documents use of digital dissection tutorials in place of in-person laboratory time for a gross anatomy course in a dental medicine doctorate (DMD) program. Tutorials were developed with a standard digital camera and Camtasia video editing software. Plastinated head and neck specimens prepared by the Von Hagens company in Germany were used in place of standard, embalmed cadaveric donors. Initial student feedback (N=40) indicated that the tutorials were helpful/very helpful (100%), clinically relevant/very clinically relevant (97.5%), were impactful on content retention (100%) and were appropriate/very appropriate with respect to length (3-8 min; 97.5%). After these initial findings were …

Student Research Poster Presentations 2021

Background: A common impairment with vestibular disorders is diminished balance. Previous systematic reviews have analyzed the efficacy of virtual reality (VR) systems in vestibular rehabilitation in both clinical and home settings. However, none have specifically focused on the improvement of balance with VR systems in individuals with peripheral vestibular disorders.

Purpose: The purpose of this systematic review was to assess the efficacy of using VR systems to treat balance impairments in individuals with peripheral vestibular disorders.

Methods: Two searches were completed, the first in August 2020 and the second in January 2021. Databases searched included: EBSCOhost (CINAHL Complete and Medline) …

Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva -Second Skeleton, Emily Paciga Jan 2021

Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva -Second Skeleton, Emily Paciga

Student Research Poster Presentations 2021

For my poster presentation, I chose how disease, illness, and sickness are defined differently in medicine. Specifically, the humanities bring awareness to treating the person as a whole rather than their prognosis. The ability to differentiate the aforementioned criteria allows for the individual to have the best treatment and outcome. I decided to show how within Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP) there are different definitions of the diagnosis.

The poster delves into the definition of disease as the medical definition of the diagnosis—essentially, what the doctor informs to the patient. With FOP, common characteristic of the disease include stiff rigidity of …

Reducing Dose In Coronary Computed Tomography Angiography (Ccta), Mariah Ambrosio Jan 2021

Reducing Dose In Coronary Computed Tomography Angiography (Ccta), Mariah Ambrosio

Student Research Poster Presentations 2021

This project describes the different techniques that can be implemented during coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) to reduce patient dose. CCTA exams are becoming increasingly popular in diagnosing coronary artery disease (CAD) due to its noninvasive nature. However, CCTA exams provide some of the greatest radiation dose of any computed tomography exam. As a result of this exam, patients can receive a total effective dose anywhere from 15 millisieverts (mSv) to 20 mSv and higher. This project discusses reducing dose by means of electrocardiogram (ECG) – triggered prospective gating, reducing tube potential and bolus tracking. Also, the proper use and …
