Imposter Syndrome And Depressive Symptoms In Medical Students, Christopher Gilbert, Varsha Karamchandani May 2022

Imposter Syndrome And Depressive Symptoms In Medical Students, Christopher Gilbert, Varsha Karamchandani

Posters

INTRODUCTION
Imposter syndrome (IS), characterized by chronic feelings of self-doubt as well as fear of being discovered as an intellectual fraud, has been reported to have a high prevalence among medical student populations. Many forms of psychological distress, such as depressive symptoms, have also been found to have a high prevalence among medical student populations. Combined, these can lead to poor scholastic performance and poor mental health. The object of this research is to gather data by survey about the prevalence of IS within the medical student community and explore its potential relation to depressive symptoms.

Blunt Trauma And Diaphragm Injury In Children: An Analysis Of The National Trauma Data Bank, Sammie Lai, Patrick Karabon, Patrick Modren, Begum Akay, Anthony Stallion, Pavan Brahmamdam

Posters

INTRODUCTION
Trauma is the leading cause of mortality and morbidity in children. Traumatic diaphragm rupture (TDR) is a rare but serious injury that can be difficult to identify. The current literature includes individual case reports and single center case series only, which limits our ability to generalize those findings. The purpose of this study is to use the National Trauma Data Bank (NTDB) in order to examine the clinical outcomes of blunt TDR in the pediatric population.

We hypothesize that esophageal perforation is not a common etiology for spontaneous pneumomediastinum (SPM), and that SPM is a self-limited disease not requiring routine admission.

Hearing Durability And Trajectory After Radiosurgery For Vestibular Schwannoma, Christian G. Fritz, Dennis I. Bojrab Ii, Nathan C. Tu, Christopher A. Schutt, Dennis I. Bojrab, Seilesh C. Babu May 2022

Hearing Durability And Trajectory After Radiosurgery For Vestibular Schwannoma, Christian G. Fritz, Dennis I. Bojrab Ii, Nathan C. Tu, Christopher A. Schutt, Dennis I. Bojrab, Seilesh C. Babu

Posters

INTRODUCTION
Vestibular schwannomas (VS) are benign skull base tumors arising from the eighth cranial nerve. Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is emerging as treatment for smaller sized tumors with the intent being to prevent further tumor growth, thus avoiding mass-effect symptoms. Hearing outcomes are commonly presented as preservation of class A/B hearing (defined as Pure Tone Average (PTA) ≤50 dB with Word Recognition Score (WRS) ≥50 dB). Long-term follow-up data on hearing outcomes and hearing trajectory trends are limited.

Development Of A Deep Neural Network For Synthesis Of Non-Contrast Cranial T1-Weighted Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Agueda M. Taylor, Evan Porter, Thomas Guerrero

Posters

INTRODUCTION
Although 122 out of 1000 people in the US have MRI’s done each year, there are over 4 million with contraindications that subsequently forgo the diagnostic benefits. Studies in recent years have implemented artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms such as deep neural networks (DNN) for production of synthetic medical imaging. The goals of this project are to develop a DNN, specifically a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) that will predict synthetic Cranial T1 Weighted MRI from non-contrast CT, and to evaluate the model quality.

Functional Lung Segmentation From Computed Tomography Images Using Deep Learning, Duyen M. Quach, Evan Porter, Thomas M. Guerrero

Posters

INTRODUCTION
Functional avoidance treatment planning allows radiation oncologists to intentionally minimize radiation dose to higher-functioning lung areas while favoring radiation dose towards lower-functioning regions. This treatment planning method has been shown to reduce pulmonary toxicity for patients receiving radiation therapy. Functional lung information, traditionally ventilation or perfusion SPECT scans, is required to plan for functional avoidance.

Evaluating The Impact Of Software Distortion Correction On Target Doses In Cranial Stereotactic Radiosurgery, Sharjil Shamim, Zachary Seymour May 2022

Evaluating The Impact Of Software Distortion Correction On Target Doses In Cranial Stereotactic Radiosurgery, Sharjil Shamim, Zachary Seymour

Posters

INTRODUCTION
Brainlab’s Elements suite proposed a novel MR distortion correction method based on CT imaging. This involves registration of sub-volumes from MR imaging to generate single continuous deformation field maps, creating a corrected MR image set. No literature currently exists studying the impact of software correction on target dose for cranial stereotactic radiosurgery. In this study, we aim to evaluate the impact of Brainlab distortion correction on radiation target dose compared to original treatment plans without distortion correction.

The Prognostic Significance Of Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase As A Biomarker In Head And Neck Squamous Cell Carcinomas Treated With Conventional Chemoradiation, Kenneth H. Barker, Barbara L. Pruetz, Jessica D. Arden, Thomas J. Quinn, George D. Wilson

Posters

INTRODUCTION
The prognosis of patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) treated with chemoradiation can be predicted using p16 as a surrogate biomarker of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) status, but a subset of patients continues to do poorly despite a positive or negative p16 status. This project attempted to identify another biomarker, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) as a marker for prognosis in HNSCC patients. Radiation induces oxidative damage to destroy tumor cells, and G6PD is a key enzyme involved in protecting cells from oxidative damage. The goal of this project was to identify a prognostic biomarker that would aid …

Irreversible Electroporation For Recurrent Pelvic Metastases: Case Series And Literature Review, Duncan A. Stevens, Jeffrey H. Savin, Brett J. Friedman, Michael A. Savin

Posters

INTRODUCTION
Irreversible electroporation (IRE) is a nonthermal ablative technique that has potential safety advantages over thermal ablation in the treatment of tumors near critical structures. It creates an electrical field which forms permanent nanopores in the membranes of cells and triggers apoptosis. This case series reviews three patients with pelvic metastases from colorectal cancer treated with IRE.

INTRODUCTION
DNA-sequencing is not readily available in countries with little research resources or where health insurance does not cover the costs. This is especially true for very rare (orphan) inheritable retinal diseases. We wanted to develop a rapid targeted-sequencing protocol for eight genes involved in Familial Exudative Vitreo-Retinopathy (FEVR), Norrie Disease, and Retinoschisis, at greatly reduced cost.

Intraoperative Map, Vasopressors, And Opioids In Tf-Tavr Patients Undergoing Conscious Sedation Vs General Anesthesia, Brett J Friedman, Patrick Karabon, Wei C Lau

Posters

INTRODUCTION
Aortic stenosis is a progressive narrowing of the aortic valve that can cause serious cardiovascular harm such as syncope, heart failure, and death if left untreated. Transfemoral-transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TF-TAVR) emerged in the last 10 years as an alternative for previously inoperable, high-risk patients. Studies suggest that monitored anesthesia for TF-TAVR using minimalist conscious sedation results in better outcomes (e.g., shorter length of stay, lower 30-day mortality) when compared to general anesthesia. However, there is a gap in knowledge of why conscious sedation is more successful. Recent studies have demonstrated the association of intraoperative mean arterial pressure (MAP) …

Outcomes For Patients With Congestive Heart Failure And Chronic Kidney Disease Receiving Fluid Resuscitation For Severe Sepsis Or Septic Shock, Melany Wiczorek, Ronny Otero, Steven Knight, Kaitlin Ziadeh, James Blumline, Zachary Rollins

Posters

INTRODUCTION
Sepsis core measures are an integral part of sepsis treatment. Current fluid administration guidelines consist of administering at least 30cc/kg of intravenous fluids (IVF) per ideal body weight (IBW) within the first three hours of sepsis diagnosis regardless of pre-existing comorbidities at risk for fluid overload. This study aims to evaluate the outcomes of patients with a history of congestive heart failure (CHF) and/or chronic kidney disease (CKD) who receive fluid resuscitation for the management of severe sepsis or septic shock.

INTRODUCTION
Testing with fractional flow reserve derived from computed tomography (FFRCT) can be used to stratify otherwise indeterminate grade stenoses on cardiac computed tomography angiography (CCTA). Long-term clinical outcomes using FFRCT have been reported in stable heart disease but not for acute chest pain (ACP). This study analyzes clinical outcomes in patients with ACP who underwent FFRCT, including the risk of mortality, myocardial infarction (MI), invasive coronary angiography (ICA), and revascularization.

Does Aspirin Reduce Risk For Future Cardiovascular Events In Women With Diabetes?, Olivia Hillier, Amna Zeb, Pamela Marcovitz May 2022

Does Aspirin Reduce Risk For Future Cardiovascular Events In Women With Diabetes?, Olivia Hillier, Amna Zeb, Pamela Marcovitz

Posters

INTRODUCTION
The use of low dose aspirin (LDA) in primary prevention of cardiovascular events (CVE) is no longer recommended due to lack of benefit in prevention of primary outcome and increased bleeding risks. It’s postulated that LDA could still be of benefit in those with very high vascular risk including diabetes mellitus (DM) as it confers a higher risk for future CVE in women as compared to men. We conducted a meta-analysis to determine if use of low dose ASA is beneficial to lower CVE in women with multiple risk factors.

Impact Of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome On Cardiovascular Disease In Obese Female Youth, Collin R. Walentine, Michael R. Brennan, Kristen J. Nadeau, Melanie Cree-Green

Posters

INTRODUCTION
17% of youth in the United States are obese and the incidence is rising. Among obese adolescents, girls with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) represent a vulnerable and understudied group. PCOS is strongly associated with dyslipidemia and cardiovascular disease (CVD) in adulthood, but studies of CVD in youth are limited. We hypothesized that obese youth with PCOS would show evidence of vascular dysfunction relative to girls with obesity without PCOS.

INTRODUCTION
Beaumont Hospital values patient and family-centered care, but a clear understanding of how patients perceive their health care teams and prefer to make decisions regarding their medical treatment have not been well-described. It is necessary to understand patients’ preferences regarding various factors that impact their medical care in order to foster an effective health care environment. The primary goal of this study is to determine how patients’ care teams impact the ways in which they make decisions regarding their medical treatment. A secondary goal is to determine the individuals, both inside and outside of the health care setting, that …

Effectiveness Of Prenatal Screening Tests On Predicting Cardiac Anomalies, Stephanie Y. Wong, Zeynep Alpay Savasan May 2022

Effectiveness Of Prenatal Screening Tests On Predicting Cardiac Anomalies, Stephanie Y. Wong, Zeynep Alpay Savasan

Posters

INTRODUCTION
Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the leading cause of birth defect-associated infant death. With 1 in 111 newborns born with CHD and an elevated infant mortality rate of 30-50%, early detection is imperative. Current prenatal screening mainly focuses on detecting chromosomal anomalies. However, the accuracy of these exams on detecting fetal cardiac abnormalities is not well researched. The primary goal of this study is to compare three prenatal screening tests’ potential, i.e anatomy ultrasound, nuchal translucency (NT), and cell-free DNA (cfDNA), in identifying risk for fetal cardiac anomalies.

Descriptive Causes For Decreased Breast And Cervical Screenings In Sikh Populations, Varneet Kaur Brar May 2022

Descriptive Causes For Decreased Breast And Cervical Screenings In Sikh Populations, Varneet Kaur Brar

Posters

INTRODUCTION
Prior evaluations of breast and cervical cancer screens have found that immigrant South Asian women have lower compliance rates when compared to non-immigrant, white, or African American women (Shoemaker, 2016). It is widely accepted that early detection of cancers can improve outcomes for patients, and that screenings like mammography and pap smear tests are critical in this process. The aim of this study was to evaluate compliance rates for breast cervical cancer screens in Sikh women in Michigan, as well as to investigate attitudes which may be contributing to any disparities which may exist.

Deficits In Health Literacy And Inadequacies Of Specialized Health Care In The South For Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Patients, Kaleb Kittrell

Poster Presentations

Honors Thesis poster presentation.

Health literacy is a constantly evolving concept that requires similarly evolving adaptation and specialization of health care to increase the quality of life for all. One demographic that is largely ignored when it comes to research in health literacy, specifically in the traditional South, is the d/Deaf and hard of hearing/Hard of Hearing (DHH) population. The purpose of this study is to determine the general health literacy of this specific demographic and compare results with that of other demographics to highlight the anticipated deficit in health literacy levels and emphasize the critical need for specialized care. …

Biol 335 Pathophysiology: Bracketology: Disease Edition, Meredith A. Rowe Ph.D.

Open Educational Resources

This project was designed for use in BIOL 335 Pathophysiology, an elective course for which Anatomy & Physiology I and II are prerequisites. The project is based on a single-elimination bracket where progression to the next round is decided by vote of the class, but the votes are independent of student grades. As individual students are “eliminated” by the voting process, they are assigned to work with another student who is still “in,” so the groups gradually become larger as the project progresses. There are two graded assignments for each round: one is a presentation, and one is a written …
