Birds, Bats And Minds. Tales Of A Revolutionary Scientist: Donald R. Griffin. Volume Three, Carolyn A. Ristau
Birds, Bats And Minds. Tales Of A Revolutionary Scientist: Donald R. Griffin. Volume Three, Carolyn A. Ristau
eBooks
In this three-volume biography, we revisit the life and accomplishments of the revolutionary scientist, Donald R. Griffin. He encountered a lifetime of initial hostile resistance to his ideas and studies; now they are largely accepted. He and a colleague discovered the phenomenon of echolocation used by bats to navigate and capture insects, proposed that birds navigate guided by such cues as the sun and stars, and suggested that animals are likely aware, thinking and feeling beings. Forty interviews with his colleagues and friends help us understand the young emerging scientist and the mature researcher. We learn about his and others’ …

Background Cardiac anomalies in PHACE syndrome (P: posterior fossa anomalies, H: hemangiomas, A: arterial lesions, C: cardiac abnormalities, E: abnormalities of the eye) often consists of complex aortic arch anomalies with double aortic arch (DAA) being an uncommon association. Atresia of the proximal segment of the left arch in DAA is extremely rare and can pose a diagnostic and management conundrum due to formation of a loose vascular ring and asymptomatic nature as seen in our case. Case Description A 5-year-old male, diagnosed with PHACE syndrome, at a different center was noted to have an incidental finding on head imaging …

Transposition Of The Great Arteries With Intramural Left Main Coronary Artery: Salient Imaging Findings And Description Of Two Operative Techniques, Joshua Holbert, Manasa Gadiraju, Sanket Shah, Edo Bedzra

Background: Transposition of the great arteries (TGA) is a common cyanotic critical congenital heart disease, with a feasible prenatal diagnosis. Arterial switch operation (ASO) with/without VSD closure is the preferred surgical approach with added challenge when an intramural coronary artery (IMC) is present. ASO is technically quite demanding with IMC, and incidence of post-operative complications and mortality are potentially higher. We present our recent TGA-IMC experience focusing on salient features identified on echocardiography, CT and invasive angiograms, as well as variations in ASO surgical techniques for repair. Methods: Our echo imaging acquisition required high frequency transducers and shallow image depth …

Introduction
- Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is an aggressive and therapy-resistant cancer with an overall 5-year survival rate of almost 12%, making it among the most lethal of all major cancers.1
- PDAC has a distinct genomic profile, with somatic KRAS protooncogene mutations in ~90% of cases.2,3
- Current literature has not reached a consensus on disease prognosis based on KRAS mutation subtype.2-5

Research Methods Poster Session 2024
This meta-narrative synthesis highlights the effectiveness of diagnosing and treating melanoma with Micrographically Oriented Histography Surgery (MOHS) technique. Initiating the questions: What techniques does MOHS surgery involve when diagnosing and treating non-metastasized Melanoma? How will it provide positive outcomes for the patient? The significance of using MOHS excision technique and diagnosis of localized facial melanoma compared to traditional cancer excision techniques is designed to remove affected tissue while preserving anatomical facial structure in an aesthetic fashion. Providing an overview of the technique’s diagnostic professional capabilities as well as its strengths, limitations, improvement for upcoming studies, and potential prognosis. Melanoma, a …
