Yoga-Based Occupational Therapy For People With Upper Extremity Dysfunction: An Educational Video Series, Bianca Salgado, Steven Gerardi, Mary Smith Aug 2024

Yoga-Based Occupational Therapy For People With Upper Extremity Dysfunction: An Educational Video Series, Bianca Salgado, Steven Gerardi, Mary Smith

Summer 2024 OTD Capstone Symposium

The upper extremity (UE) is essential for daily activities and occupational tasks. The inability to perform these tasks can negatively impact self-efficacy and hinder injury recovery. Current hand therapy often focuses on biomechanical approaches, neglecting these psychosocial aspects and deviating from core occupational therapy (OT) principles. Integrating yoga into OT for UE injuries and disorders can fill the gap in hand therapy needed to address psychosocial factors. However, Certified hand therapists who are occupational therapists lack the knowledge to integrate yoga-based interventions into OT practice for clients with UE conditions. The purpose of this project was to create an educational …

Ot's Role In Community Accessibility At Public Parks And Playgrounds For Parents With Disabilities, Janae Paulo, Amy Lyons-Brown, Stacy Frauwith, Lena Gipson Showalter

Summer 2024 OTD Capstone Symposium

Public parks and playgrounds play a crucial role in fostering parent-child interaction, social inclusion, and community engagement. However, these essential recreational spaces often remain inaccessible to individuals with disabilities (Lynch et al., 2020). Research underscores the benefits of inclusive playgrounds, yet many are not designed to accommodate adults with disabilities, thus creating barriers for parents with disabilities who wish to engage with their children (Dalpra, 2022; Jacob et al., 2017). Although occupational therapy (OT) practitioners are instrumental in ensuring environmental accessibility within home settings, their involvement in the design of public spaces is limited. Young et al. (2019) advocate for …

Presentations

Background: Asthma exacerbations are a leading cause of pediatric hospitalizations, and systemic corticosteroids remain a key component of inpatient treatment. Emergency department-focused studies have shown dexamethasone to be equivalent to prednisone/prednisolone in terms of outcomes such as readmission rates, but less is known about the trends in dexamethasone use versus other systemic corticosteroids, and associated outcomes in the inpatient setting. Objectives/Goal: To describe variability and trends in inpatient systemic corticosteroid prescribing practices for acute asthma exacerbations, and to determine associations between the prescribed steroid and hospitalization outcomes. Methods/Design: This retrospective cross-sectional study utilized the PHIS database to examine patients aged …

Variables Affecting Neurodevelopmental Outcomes In Infants With Critical Congenital Heart Disease, Elizabeth Loughman, Marcie G. Files, Julie Weiner

Posters

Background: The mortality of cardiac conditions in infancy is improving with advances in surgical planning and medical management. Neurologic morbidity remains significant, and clinically correlating an infant with their neurologic exam, MRI/EEG, and subsequent developmental testing remains a challenge. Counseling parents regarding neurologic outcomes after cardiac intervention is difficult due to the wide range of findings that can sometimes prove to be clinically irrelevant. Purpose: The goal of this study is to identify factors associated with poor neurodevelopmental outcomes in infants with critical congenital heart defects (CCHD) as assessed by the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development Edition IV …

Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine Posters

Introduction

Pulmonary sarcoidosis may resolve or progress to advanced stages. Increased lung neutrophils obtained by bronchoalveolar lavage are found in advanced pulmonary sarcoidosis. Persistence of a neutrophilic alveolitis has been postulated to result in tissue injury and remodeling that leads to fibrosis and clinical features of advanced disease. Since neutrophils are a source of matrix-degrading proteins like matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), we hypothesized that PMNs promote disease progression through the release of MMPs. This work explores the relationship between lung neutrophils and MMP9 levels and activity and how they are associated with sarcoidosis clinical phenotypes.

A History Of The Development Of Alternatives To Animals In Research And Testing, John Parascandola

New Directions in the Human-Animal Bond

Growing public interest in animal welfare issues in recent decades has prompted increased attention to the efforts to develop alternative, nonanimal methods for use in biomedical research and product testing. In A History of the Development of Alternatives to Animals in Research and Testing, the first book-length study of the subject, John Parascandola traces the history of the concept of alternatives to the use of animals in research and testing in Britain and the United States from its beginnings until it had become firmly established in the scientific and animal protection communities by the end of the 1980s. Modeling Interprofessional Excellence Transforming Medical Education For Collaborative Care, Kerry Miller, Paige Hardy, Neil Kalsi, Nathan Gollehon, Brianna Brei, Jason Burrows, Liliana Bronner

Posters and Presentations: Family Medicine

In our medical school, we designed an innovative interprofessional education (IPE) experience to prepare medical students for collaborative healthcare. Through a family-centered NICU high-risk follow-up clinic, students observed and engaged with a diverse team, including a developmental specialist, neonatal nurse practitioner, physician, and nurse. We developed a rubric based on the four IPEC competencies, evaluating students’ understanding before and after the rotation. Results from 118 participants showed significant improvement (p < .001) across competencies, with large effect sizes (Cohen's d: 1.02 to 2.14). This experience highlights the effectiveness of clinical modeling in enhancing interprofessional practice skills among medical students.

Promoting Academic And Social Well-Being For Young Adults With Asd Towards Post-Secondary Education And Employment, Theresa Holcomb, Pam Kasyan-Howe, Kristin Domville

Summer 2024 OTD Capstone Symposium

This program and policy-type capstone addresses the gap in inclusive services for young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in post-secondary education (PSE). It resulted in developing and implementing a Social Engagement program designed to enhance communication skills, self-advocacy, and workplace preparedness—key factors for academic and vocational success. Guided by the Occupational Adaptation Model (OAM) and the Person-Environment-Occupation-Performance (PEOP) model, the program used a board game-based format to facilitate interactive learning and the practical application of social skills. Targeting young adults with ASD involved in vocational training, the program emphasized developing professional communication and workplace social interaction. The findings indicate …
